Hoop Dreams was originally slated to be a 30-minute short film, but it expanded to a 171 minute documentary about two high schoolers (William Gates and Arthur Agee) and their dream of becoming stars in the NBA. With a budget of $700,000, the film grossed $11 million in theaters and received numerous awards, including the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. In 2007, a sequel was released titled Hoop Reality.
