Wilks is leaving the 49ers after spending just one year with the organization. The former Arizona Cardinals head coach was brought in as a replacement for DeMeco Ryans ahead of the 2023 season.

The 49ers’ head coach, Kyle Shanahan, confirmed the news about Wilks’ departure during a news conference. According to Shanahan, Wilks wasn’t “the right fit.”

“We felt pretty strongly that this was the decision that was best for our organization,” Shanahan added. “Even though it was one I didn’t want to make, it was something that once I realized that a different direction was what’s best for our organization, it’s something that I have to do.”

Under Wilks, the 49ers defense ranked eighth in the league with 303.9 yards allowed per game and third in points per game allowed with 17.5 during the regular season. San Francisco also allowed just 31 touchdowns, second-least in the NFL behind the Baltimore Ravens. However, many believed that the defensive unit took a step back after ranking first in multiple categories in 2023.

Wilks received criticism for the way the 49ers played on defense during the Super Bowl. Defensive end Nick Bosa said that the team wasn’t prepared for the running options by Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes, while Shanahan decided to use a timeout in overtime because he didn’t like one defensive call by Wilks.

Despite entering the game as big favorites, the 49ers quickly got picked apart by the Lions’ high-octane offense. Meanwhile, San Francisco managed to put just seven points on the board to finish the half down 24-7.

However, the second half saw a completely different game. The 49ers came out on the field with new-found resilience, and it immediately got them going. After scoring a field goal on their first drive of the third quarter, their second drive finished with quarterback Brock Purdy finding wideout Brandon Aiyuk in the endzone to make it a one-possession game.

From that point onward, the 49ers got into a rhythm, scoring on three more consecutive possessions.

Their defense also stepped up, closing the lanes for the Lions and keeping them scoreless for much of the second half.

The Lions managed to punch in another touchdown to make it 34-31 with less than a minute left of the clock. However, Detroit’s onside kick failed, allowing the 49ers to run down the clock and keep their Super Bowl hopes alive.

During an appearance on The Warner House podcast earlier this week, Rice was asked if he would like to see McCaffrey taking ownership of one of his records.

“Yes — Because I believe records are meant to be broken,” Rice told host and 49ers’ linebacker Fred Warner. “What he brings to the table, I’m talking about from scrimmage, from rushing the ball, from catching the ball, scoring touchdowns, he does it all man, he does it all.”

“So it’s okay, it’s alright. I got quite a few records now, okay? I don’t mind sharing some of those records,” Rice added.

Sources have confirmed that the Washington Commanders traded Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a third-round draft pick. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said general manager John Lynch had been working on bolstering the roster but was unsure of whether players would be interested in joining a team on a three-game losing streak.

“If we think there is a chance to improve us, we’ll do it,” Shanahan explained. “It doesn’t sound like there’s a lot of options out there but doesn’t mean for sure no. I know we’ll look up that all the way up to the deadline and see if anything changes.”

Purdy will need to be cleared for full contact by a Niners team physician as well as examined by an independent neurological consultant. Both the independent neurological consultant and the team physician will have to agree that Purdy’s concussion has been resolved in order for the quarterback to play in Sunday’s game.
