Most athletes want their records to stand for eternity. However, Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice wouldn’t mind seeing one of his long-standing records with the San Francisco 49ers being bested by star running back Christian McCaffrey.

Rice holds numerous 49ers’ franchise records, including most touchdowns in a single season. The legendary wideout set the record during the 1987 season when he had 22 TDs. McCaffrey currently has 20 touchdowns, with three games left in the 2023 campaign.

During an appearance on The Warner House podcast earlier this week, Rice was asked if he would like to see McCaffrey taking ownership of one of his records.

“Yes — Because I believe records are meant to be broken,” Rice told host and 49ers’ linebacker Fred Warner. “What he brings to the table, I’m talking about from scrimmage, from rushing the ball, from catching the ball, scoring touchdowns, he does it all man, he does it all.”

“So it’s okay, it’s alright. I got quite a few records now, okay? I don’t mind sharing some of those records,” Rice added.

Christian McCaffrey is having a stellar 2023 season and is considered one of the favorites to win the NFL MVP award. In 14 games he played so far, McCaffrey has 1,801 yards from scrimmage and 20 rushing and receiving touchdowns, the most in the league in both categories.

Even if McCaffrey takes his record, Rice will have plenty more left. He owns the majority of the receiving records in the NFL, including most catches (1,549), most receiving yards (22,895), and most receiving TDs (197).
