Liverpool is the lone team standing at the top of the Premier League standings amid one of the most congested title races in recent memory. Merseyside club benefited from their comeback win against Brighton and a goalless draw between Manchester City and Arsenal, two other challengers for the title.

Entering Sunday, Liverpool was tied with Arsenal at the top, with each team having 64 points, one more than Man City behind them.

Liverpool faced Brighton, and things didn’t look good early on, as they conceded a goal in the second minute of the game. However, Luis Diaz scored an equalizer in the 27th minute and Mohammed Salah added another goal in the 67th minute to seal a 2-1 win.

Manchester City and Arsenal faced each other later in the day and didn’t exactly give the fans their money’s worth. What was expected to be an attacking clash turned out to be a defense-oriented affair. While City enjoyed 73% possession, the two teams only managed to account for three shots on target.

Now, Liverpool has 67 points, two more than second-placed Arsenal and three more than City in the third spot. Out of the three clubs, City has the easiest remaining schedule, facing five teams from the bottom 10 in the next nine games.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has warned his team’s Premier League rivals that the Reds are looking to ignite a comeback as England’s top flight resumes following the international World Cup break. Currently sixth in the Premier League table, Klopp believed that his team showed character during their narrow 3-2 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Thursday.

“There is a lot to come, we don’t think about the break anymore. It’s a start for something new and building on the things we’ve done so far and knowing and expecting that we can do better — starting on Boxing Day,” Klopp announced.

While Klopp remains unconvinced by his team’s counter-press, he did feel like there were many signs of improvement that the team showed when compared to the slump that they hit during the first half of the season. He acknowledged, however, that it would be difficult for his players who had recently returned from the World Cup to cope with the packed schedule that lay ahead, especially given the short break between the international break and returns to the club season.

The Reds are set to face Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday night.

Midfielder James Milner has signed a new one-year contract with Liverpool, keeping him at the Premier League club for another season.

Prior to signing his new contract, it appeared as if Milner was on course to leave the Reds as a free transfer during the summer due to his contract expiring at the end of June. Milne was Manager Jurgen Klopp’s plan for Milner that convinced the 36-year-old to remain at the club.

“An overriding feeling for me — and a vitally important one in the process — was the belief I can still contribute to the team. The gaffer was clear what he thought and that was a big factor in me extending my contract,” Milner stated.

While initially a regular starter for the team, Milner has been shifted to a more rotational role, appearing in 24 Premier League games for Liverpool. Despite a relative lack of gametime, Milner remains an integral member of the Liverpool squad, with Klopp referring to Milner’s leadership skills in the dressing room as a vital part of Liverpool’s success.

Milner joined Liverpool in 2015, signing from Manchester City for $15.40 million. Since arriving at the Reds, Milner has won an array of trophies, including the FA Cup, the English League Cup, the 2019/20 Premier League, and the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League.

According to manager Jurgen Klopp, the Brazilian attacker will most likely be unavailable through December. This news comes as Firminho was due to represent Brazil during their world cup qualifiers against Columbia and Argentine next week.

As a result of his injury, Firminho has been replaced by Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior in the Brazilian squad for the upcoming games.

Unable to appear in Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League fixture against West Ham United this weekend, Firminho is just of multiple injury concerns harbored by Liverpool. Currently, the Reds’ injured players include Curtis Jones, James Milner, Joe Gomez and Naby Keita.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revisited his previous complaints against Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding the number of penalties that they have received in the Premier League. This comes as Liverpool is set to pay Manchester United a visit during their Premier League clash on Sunday.

Over the last Premier League season, Manchester United was awarded 11 penalty kicks in comparison to Liverpool’s six. This season, however, both teams are level with just one spot-kick apiece.

Still, Klopp reiterated his belief that the Red Devils were awarded a disproportionate amount of penalties while speaking at a press conference on Friday.

“They are really good, they go in the box, they have these kinds of situations. But we have them as well and got not even a similar amount of penalties. But it’s facts, it’s done. Nothing else to say about it,” an angered Klopp stated.

The Liverpool manager first ignited his penalty row against Man Utd last January, when the referee refused to award what Klopp believed to be a clear penalty during a loss to Southampton. This was the moment that he infamously claimed that Man Utd “had more penalties in two years than I had in five-and-a-half years.”

Liverpool was forced to have an active transfer deadline on Monday after tests revealed that their center back Joel Matip will miss the rest of the 2020-21 season with an ankle injury. With several other defenders already out, the Premier League powerhouse decided to make some last-minute additions.

The club confirmed on social media on Monday that they have acquired center back Ben Davies from Preston North End on permanent transfer and center back Ozan Kabak from Schalke 04 on loan.

Reportedly, Davies arrives on a $700K fee with Preston also being entitled to $1.35 million in add-ons depending on the player’s performances.

For Kabak, Liverpool will pay a $1.35 million loan fee and a potential $680K bonus. The English club will also have the opportunity to acquire the Turkish international on a permanent transfer in the summer for around $25 million.

Liverpool has been hit with significant injuries on the defensive end this season. Besides Matip, starting defender Virgil Van Dijk is also out for the season with an ACL injury, while backup Joe Gomez is expected to be on the sidelines for at least a couple of months as well. Manager Jurgen Klopp had to play midfielders Fabinho and John Henderson on defense because of this, but with the arrival of the new duo, things should return to normal for the Reds.

Ben Davies spent his entire career with North End, making his pro debut in 2013. The 25-year-old player, who also had lone stints with several low-tier clubs, has 145 appearances for the Championship side in all competitions.

Ozan Kabak, on the other hand, played for Galatasaray, Stuttgart, and Schalke 04 since debuting in 2018. A Turkish international since 2019, he’s so far made seven appearances for his country.

Liverpool had gone undefeated at Anfield for a long time, winning 68 straight games in the arena. This streak had gone all the way back to April of 2017.

They expected that legendary streak to continue when they took on a struggling Burnley squad. But little did they know that Burnley had some plans of their own.

Before Liverpool knew what hit them, they had lost 0-1 in a shocking defeat, ending a historical run in a game where no one expected it to happen.

Considering the fact that Liverpool are the reigning Premier League champions, there was no reason to think that Burnley, who sat in the bottom three of the standings, would put up such a fight.

Liverpool simply couldn’t find the net, only managing to land six of their 27 shots on target. Burnley, meanwhile, defended their goal exquisitely and maintained an aggressive approach throughout the entire game.

With this win, Burnley was able to elevate themselves to No. 16 in the Premier League standings. Liverpool, unfortunately, dropped to fourth place.

However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has eyes only for the future: “If I sit now here, losing against Burnley and didn’t score for the last four games and talk about the title race, how silly that would be?”

Manchester City lost the Premier League title to Liverpool this season, but they will at least still hold the record for most points won in a single Premier League season.

Liverpool entered the Wednesday night match against Arsenal with a chance to break that record, needing three wins in their remaining three games of 2019/20. However, the reds tripped on the first obstacle.

Liverpool opened the match against Arsenal the best way imaginable, getting the lead in the 20th minute thanks to forward Sadio Mane. However, the London club didn’t back down and quickly struck back.

Arsenal managed to get level thanks to Alexandre Lacazette, who used one poor Virgil van Dijk’s back-pass to get to the ball and place it past Alisson in 32′ minute. Liverpool’s goalkeeper followed this by mistake of his own just before halftime, handing over the possession to the opponents in the penalty box and allowing Reiss Nelson to score his first goal in Arsenal jersey.

Liverpool tried to get back into the game in the second half, but couldn’t capitalize on their chances and ended up suffering only their third loss in 2019/20.

This was Arsenal’s first win over Liverpool since 2015.

“I’m disappointed and angry about a few things but the game was good, the attitude was good, but we took a break and that is why we lost the game. That is football, someone is surprised these boys are human beings – I am not. From time to time they are not perfect,” said Liverpool’s head coach Jurgen Klopp after the game.

There are still several records that Liverpool can break or tie before the end of the season, including the biggest title-winning margin and most wins in a season.

Liverpool will play the remaining seven games of the Premier League without their defender Joel Matip, who is set to miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.

Matip initially suffered the injury on June 21st, when Liverpool returned to action against Everton. The 28-year-old Cameroonian wasn’t on the pitch for the club’s 4-0 win against Crystal Palace, and he now revealed that he wouldn’t be back on the field until 2020/21.

“This season I will be not back on the pitch but, for next season, I hope I’m going to be – quite early – a direct help for the team,” said Matip in a chat with the club’s website.

Missing Matip won’t be much of a problem for Liverpool, considering they have already secured the Premier League title. The club was previously eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and won’t get the chance to defend the trophy they won last season.

Joel Matip spent his early career in Bundesliga with Germany, before joining Liverpool in 2016 as a free agent. Since then, Matip made 111 appearances for the club, emerging as an integral part of their back four. He also managed to score five goals.

Matip represented Cameroon on the international level but decided to retire from the national team after 2015.

History was made on Thursday night as Liverpool FC clinched its first-ever Premier League title, an agonizing and embarrassing sore point for the Reds during the past three decades.

The 2019 Champions League winner has been one of the top teams in the world over the past few seasons but had still been unable to break their league drought in England thanks in large part to Manchester City’s dominance at the top of the table.

However, in an ironic twist of fate, it was Manchester City’s 2-1 loss at Chelsea on Thursday which sealed the Reds’ first-ever Premier League title.

Liverpool’s last English league title had come in 1990 when they won the English First Division before the creation of the Premier League.

Liverpool has dominated the league all season long, but its title hopes were cast into question when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of the remainder of the season in March. There were questions as to whether or not the season would resume and if Liverpool would be able to hoist the title, but those doubts were eventually resolved.

With seven games left in the season, Liverpool will look to avoid any significant injuries and enjoy the rest of the season as they celebrate their hard-earned and well-deserved crown.
