Liverpool will play the remaining seven games of the Premier League without their defender Joel Matip, who is set to miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.

Matip initially suffered the injury on June 21st, when Liverpool returned to action against Everton. The 28-year-old Cameroonian wasn’t on the pitch for the club’s 4-0 win against Crystal Palace, and he now revealed that he wouldn’t be back on the field until 2020/21.

“This season I will be not back on the pitch but, for next season, I hope I’m going to be – quite early – a direct help for the team,” said Matip in a chat with the club’s website.

Missing Matip won’t be much of a problem for Liverpool, considering they have already secured the Premier League title. The club was previously eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and won’t get the chance to defend the trophy they won last season.

Joel Matip spent his early career in Bundesliga with Germany, before joining Liverpool in 2016 as a free agent. Since then, Matip made 111 appearances for the club, emerging as an integral part of their back four. He also managed to score five goals.

Matip represented Cameroon on the international level but decided to retire from the national team after 2015.
