Manchester City lost the Premier League title to Liverpool this season, but they will at least still hold the record for most points won in a single Premier League season.

Liverpool entered the Wednesday night match against Arsenal with a chance to break that record, needing three wins in their remaining three games of 2019/20. However, the reds tripped on the first obstacle.

Liverpool opened the match against Arsenal the best way imaginable, getting the lead in the 20th minute thanks to forward Sadio Mane. However, the London club didn’t back down and quickly struck back.

Arsenal managed to get level thanks to Alexandre Lacazette, who used one poor Virgil van Dijk’s back-pass to get to the ball and place it past Alisson in 32′ minute. Liverpool’s goalkeeper followed this by mistake of his own just before halftime, handing over the possession to the opponents in the penalty box and allowing Reiss Nelson to score his first goal in Arsenal jersey.

Liverpool tried to get back into the game in the second half, but couldn’t capitalize on their chances and ended up suffering only their third loss in 2019/20.

This was Arsenal’s first win over Liverpool since 2015.

“I’m disappointed and angry about a few things but the game was good, the attitude was good, but we took a break and that is why we lost the game. That is football, someone is surprised these boys are human beings – I am not. From time to time they are not perfect,” said Liverpool’s head coach Jurgen Klopp after the game.

There are still several records that Liverpool can break or tie before the end of the season, including the biggest title-winning margin and most wins in a season.
