After a disappointing start to the campaign, Tottenham Hotspur has decided to go in a totally different direction and shake up the club big time with a coaching change.

Spurs announced on Tuesday night that they had sacked manager Mauricio Pochettino. After more than five seasons in charge at the North London club and last year’s UEFA Champions League Final appearance, his run at the club has finally ended.

The team is currently underperforming massively in the Premier League, in 14th place with only 3 wins on the season.

Taking over for Pochettino will be one of the biggest and most controversial names in the sport: Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho, who was last manager at Manchester United before being fired last season, has signed a massive three-year contract with the team that is worth nearly $20 million per year.

Many were surprised by the choice for Mourinho to join Spurs considering his long history with Chelsea, one of the team’s main rivals. The Portuguese head man spent 2004-2007 and 2013-2015 with the Blues.

Everton’s game on Sunday with Tottenham, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, was overshadowed by a serious leg injury suffered by midfielder Andre Gomes in the second half of the match.

Gomes, who was signed by the Toffees after one loan season over the summer for $28.5 million, was forced to leave the game after a challenge by Tottenham’s Son Heung-min.

In the 79th minute of the game, as Gomes attemped to go down the wing of the field to start an attack, the South Korean forward attempted a slide tackle to dislodge the ball from the Portuguese midfielder.

Tottenham defeated London rivals Crystal Palace by a 2-0 final, vaulting them ahead two places in the standings and putting them momentarily in 3rd place in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace, currently in 13th in the league, frustrated Spurs for much of the first half on Wednesday. Despite the festive atmosphere and the support of an energized fan base, Tottenham was unable to break through in the first 45 minutes.

However, in the second half, Spurs didn’t have to wait long for a goal. Heung-Min Song was assisted by Christian Eriksen in the 55th minute to score the game’s first goal.

Spurs continued their dominance, and doubled their lead with an Eriksen strike in the 80th minute, putting the nail in the coffin of a 2-0 victory in their inaugural game at Tottenham Stadium.

Arsenal, who was a heavy favorite to win their game against the Belarusian side, ended up going down by a surprising 1-0 final score against the Belarus Premier League champions.

Despite controlling possession with nearly 77% and taking 16 total shots in the game at Borisov Arena, Arsenal was unable to find the net and was shut out from goal in a disheartening performance.
