The United States men’s national team suffered a 3-1 loss to Germany in a friendly played at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, on Saturday. The defeat comes after two straight wins in which USMNT scored seven goals without conceding.

Star attacker Christian Pulisic opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a stunning goal from outside the box to give the USMNT a 1-0 lead.

Germany managed to pull even before the half after captain Ilkay Gündogan found the net in the 39th minute. The second half saw the four-time World Cup winners dominating the game from the get-go and being relentless in applying pressure on USMNT’s defensive line.

The reward for Germany came in the 58th minute when forward Niclas Füllkrug scored a goal for a 2-1 lead. Just three minutes later, Bayern Munich’s youngster Jamal Musiala made it 3-1 following a bad reaction from USMNT defenders after an unfortunate deflection.

Understandably, the U.S. players were disappointed, believing they had played a better game than the result showed.

“Obviously, we have to give them credit, they have some unbelievable players, they played a strong game. But these are games that we want to start finding ways to win, “said Pulisic after the game.

United States Men’s National Team Captain Tyler Adams is closing in on a return to Premier League soccer. Sources confirmed on Friday that Bournemouth have activated the release clause in Adams’ contract at Leeds United which would see the club secure Adams’ signing for a fee in the region of £20 million ($25.4m).

Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League last season, making a move to the Cherries more appealing for a player of Adams’ stature. In addition to playing at the center of Leeds’ midfield last season, Adams led the United States to the World Cup round of 16 last year.

While closing in on a transfer to Chelsea last week, negotiations broke down, prompting several other clubs to enter the race for the player’s signature. The United States men’s national team continued its great run at this year’s Gold Cup with a convincing 6-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago. Forward Jesus Ferreira was the star of the show, scoring a hat trick and becoming the first American in history to have hat tricks in two consecutive games.

In a surprising turn of events, Gregg Berhalter will resume his job as the head coach of the United States men’s national team. The news was officially announced by U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) on Friday.

According to the announcement, Berhalter will lead the national team at least through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to take place in US, Canada, and Mexico.

Berhalter saw his contract expire after the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he led the USMNT to the Round of 16. The USSF decided not to give him a renewal at the time and instead conducted a widespread search that included looking into Jesse Marsch and Patrick Viera as candidates.

In the meantime, it looked like Berhalter was also ready to move on. He emerged as a candidate for the managerial job at Championship side Swansea City while also being courted by a number of other clubs like Eredivisie side Sparta Rotterdam.

However, the USSF and sporting director Matt Crocker apparently were not wowed by any outside candidates and decided to hand over the reins of the team back to Berhalter. The 49-year-old led the USMNT in 60 matches, recording 37 wins, 12 draws, and 11 losses.

Folarin Balogun, one of the most exciting attacking talents in soccer, has officially committed to playing for the United States men’s national team on the international level. The news was confirmed by U.S. Soccer Federation and the player himself.

Balogun is a member of Premier League side Arsenal but currently plays on loan with French club Stade Reims. He scored 19 goals and added three assists in 34 Ligue 1 matches so far in the 2022-23 season.

Balogun was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Nigerian parents but spent most of his life in England. He played for the U.S. at the U18 level before switching to England in 2018 and playing for several of the country’s youth levels.

Reportedly, both England and Nigeria made a push in recent months to convince Balogun to play for them at the senior level. However, the United States ended up making the most convincing pitch, and the player officially made a request to FIFA in order to switch his national allegiance.  

“My decision to represent the United States came together with my family,” said Balogun after the news was announced. “In the end, it became a no-brainer, but for sure, it’s just something I wanted to do, and it feels like I’m at home here. LAFC’s midfielder Timothy Tillman decided to play for the United States men’s national team moving forward. Tillman confirmed he filed a one-time switch to the USMNT with FIFA in this week’s interview with The Athletic. 

Tillman was born in Germany and played for the country’s youth teams. However, he was eligible to make a switch to the U.S., considering his father is American. His younger brother, Rangers’ Malik Tillman, made his USMNT debut in 2022 and already has four caps.

“When (Malik) joined the senior national team, he told me how much he enjoyed being with the team. He only had positive words about it,” Tillman told The Athletic. “I would be happy if I got called up, but it’s all in the coach’s hands. We’ll see. I’d be proud to represent the U.S. in any game.”

During his youth career, Timothy Tillman was considered one of Germany’s most exciting young talents. This prompted Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich to snag him from Greuther Fürth and bring him to their academy.

However, Tillman never managed to break into Bayern’s first team. He made 31 appearances for their reserve team and spent time on loans before returning to Greuther Fürth in 2020.

Now, Tillman is trying to resurrect his career in MLS, and he’s doing quite well. Since joining LAFC in February, the 24-year-old player has made six starts and scored two goals.

United States international and West Bromwich Albion striker Daryl Dike will not be available for the USMNT’s upcoming game against Mexico on Wednesday. Dike will be ruled out of action for up to nine months after suffering an Achilles injury, West Brom announced on Tuesday.

Dike was stretchered off from West Brom’s 2-1 victory over Stoke City in the EFL Championship on Saturday, requiring an oxygen mask as he was escorted from the field of play.

According to influential soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, the Italian club decided not to trigger their buy option clause and will send Dest back to Barcelona at the end of the season.

Milan brought Dest in the summer on a season-long loan that included the option to make the transfer permanent for €20 million. However, the 22-year-old player failed to make himself a permanent fixture in manager Stefano Pioli’s starting 11 and hasn’t made a single appearance for the Italian powerhouse since January.
