Jose Mourinho became the second manager in history to win five major European titles after leading his team AS Roma to the UEFA Conference League title on Wednesday night. The Portuguese manager, who follows in the footsteps of Giovanni Trapattoni, saw his team defeat Dutch side Feyenoord 1-0 in the final to become the inaugural winners of the newly-established continental competition.

In addition to lifting the 27th trophy of his managerial career, Mourinho has also contributed to a monumental moment in Roma’s history. This is the first trophy that Roma has won since the Coppa Italia in 2007/08, as well as the first ever European title in the club’s 94-year history.

“This remains in the history of Roma, but also mine. I was told only I, Sir Alex [Ferguson] and Giovanni Trapattoni won trophies in three different decades. It makes me feel a little old, but it’s nice for my career,” the 52-year-old humorously remarked.

Prior to lifting the Conference League trophy with Roma, Mourinho won the 2002–03 UEFA Cup and 2003–04 UEFA Champions League with Porto, as well as the 2009–10 UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan and the 2016-17 Europa League with Manchester United.

The Italian Serie A club Roma has another player in their sights, as they weren’t successful in their attempt to sign the Belgian Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham.

Italian news outlets are reporting that now the club is after Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren and that the Croatian can be signed for the price of $23 million. The last season was not so great for the Croatian as he found it difficult to perform under the leadership of Jurgen Klopp and he had a hard time keeping up with his teammates.

Reportedly, the Serie A club is expecting a significant lowering of the price because they have great relations with Liverpool which is apparently based on the personal closeness between the owners of the two great clubs.

The 30-year-old Lovren has one more year on his contract with Liverpool and the club is risking to let him go free of charge if they miss this transfer window. Also, the player had a few injuries which further complicates the situation. Despite all this, the club’s officials have previously stated that they didn’t intend to sell the player during this summer.

In the next few days, we will see Roma‘s negotiating capabilities.

While Manchester United’s amazing comeback against Paris Saint-Germain might’ve been the biggest soccer story on Wednesday night, Porto and Roma enjoyed a thriller of their town.

After losing in Rome by a 2-1 final, FC Porto completed a comeback of their own in the Estádio do Dragão to advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the first time since 2014.

The match finished with a 3-1 final score.

90 minutes of regulation were not enough to decide a winner, as Porto and Roma were deadlocked in the draw 2-1 at the end of regulation.

In the added 30 minutes of time, however, Porto was awarded a penalty after a Roma player pulled Fernando’s jersey in the the box.

Alex Telles converted the penalty for Porto in the 117th minute, and the champions of Portugal held on to win the draw.

Roma was unable to capitalize on a Daniele de Rossi penalty goal that tied the game at 1-1 in the 37th minute that put them provisionally in the next round.

Porto’s Moussa Marega scored a goal to give his team a 2-1 lead in the second half, and the rest was history.

Porto now must await for the draw to find out who their opponent will be in the next round.

Roma, which reached the semifinals of the 2018 edition of the Champions League, got off to a solid start in their 2019 quest with a 2-1 home win over FC Porto.

Roma has had a disappointing season in general this year, finishing in second place in Champions League pool play and currently in sixth place in Italy’s Serie A.

Tuesday night’s triumph against the reigning champions of Portugal’s Primeira Liga was a sign that this could be the start of another unexpected deep run in the Champions League.

The first half at the Stadio Olímpico in Rome ended without any score, despite Roma looking like the better team in general.

In the second half, however, Eusebio di Francesco’s men began to take over.

19-year-old forward Nicolo Zaniolo opened the scoring with a 70th minute strike assisted by Edin Dzeko.

The same teenage forward was then assisted by Dzeko again only 6 minutes later to double Roma’s lead to 2-0, netting another goal past Iker Casillas.

Porto was able to salvage a goal before the match ended, however, as striker Adrian López scored a crucial away goal to improve his team’s chances to advance in the second leg.

The game ended 2-1. The decisive second leg of the draw will be played on March 6th at Porto’s Estádio do Dragão.

Liverpool’s search for a new goalkeeper could be coming to an end. The Merseyside club bid $82m for Roma’s Alisson Becker. Roma, however, wants $90m for the 25-year-old Brazil international. Becker featured in every match during his country’s ill-fated 2018 World Cup campaign.

Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp is desperate to inject some fresh blood into his squad where both Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet proved unreliable in not just the last season but throughout the German’s reign at the club’s famous home, Anfield.

Matters came to a head during the 2018 Champions League final in Kyiv. Two catastrophic errors by Karius handed the celebrated trophy to Real Madrid. Klopp’s mood over his compatriot wasn’t improved last weekend. Karius cost Liverpool a goal during their narrow win over Tranmere Rovers in a pre-season friendly last weekend.

The club is already looking at Barcelona reserve goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen. The Netherlands international will replace Belgium international Mignolet.

Liverpool submitted a $30m offer for the Dutchman yesterday although he may remain in Spain. Cillessen recently commented he was happy to stay at the Nou Camp even if he remains the second choice.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has warned his players that they will need to respect their Champions League semi-final opponents AS Roma whom they play at Anfield on Tuesday in the first leg.

The Reds will be favourites to advance to the Champions League final for the first time since 2007 when they lost to AC Milan, however Roma can never be underestimated especially as they pulled off one of the shocks of the season so far by eliminating Barcelona during the quarter-final stage.

In the stadium do it again and better. Outside the stadium, please show the respect we have to show,” said Klopp on Monday.

“This is such an outstanding football club, an outstanding football family, known for fantastic atmospheres all over the world, so we don’t need to throw whatever at the bus of the opposing team.”

One player who will be familiar to both sides is Mohamed Salah who will be coming up against his former club.

The Egyptian international moved from Roma to Liverpool during last summers transfer window and has so far exceeded expectations as he has gone on to bag 41 goals in all competitions.

Many would have thought that it was a sealed deal for La Liga leaders Barcelona as they had won the first-leg 4-1.

Edin Dzeko found the back of the net during the fifth minute after taking advantage of a good through ball from Daniele De Rossi and De Rossi then converted a penalty during the 58th minute after Dzeko was brought down in the area by Gerard Pique.

It was Kostas Manolas who scored the decisive goal and put Roma in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since they reached European Cup final in 1984.

Barca fielded the same side that thrashed Rome during the first-leg and was favorites to go through but they were dominated during this game.
