The Philadelphia Eagles have locked their wide receiver DeVonta Smith to a new contract extension. Smith inked a three-year deal that will now keep him with the organization through the 2028 NFL season.

Smith, who was the 10th overall pick in 2021, had two more years left on his rookie deal. The Eagles confirmed the news on social media but didn’t disclose the financial terms of the agreement.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Smith’s extension is worth $75 million and comes with a $51 million guarantee. This makes Smith the fifth wideout in the league with an average annual salary of at least $25 million.

Since entering the league, Smith emerged as one of the best young receivers in the game. Throughout three seasons as a pro, the Heisman Trophy winner caught 240 passes for 3,178 yards and 19 touchdowns.

The Eagles are known to prioritize locking their key players to contracts early on, which is why they offered Smith a new deal even though they had two more years of control. The move will likely save Philly some money down the line, considering that the wide receiver market is heading toward reset with star wideouts like Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson and Cincinnati Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase expected to land near-record deals soon.

The Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers will play their Week 1 game of the 2024 season in Brazil, according to the NFL’s announcement on Wednesday. This will be the first time in league history that a regular-season game is being played in Brazil.

The Eagles and the Packers will square off on Friday, September 6, in the city of São Paulo at the Corinthians Arena, home of soccer club SC Corinthians. The league hasn’t scheduled a Friday night game in Week 1 since 1970.

“With over 35 million passionate fans in Brazil, the Friday night 2024 regular season opener in São Paulo will bring an incredible energy – marking a historic moment for our sport internationally,” said Gerrit Meier, Managing Director and Head of NFL International.

NFL’s International Series will feature four more games in 2024. Carolina Panthers will play one of its home games in Munich, Germany, while Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, and Minnesota Vikings are scheduled to play in London.

The Eagles were previously revealed as a designated team to play in Brazil, but their opponent wasn’t revealed at the time. It came down to the Packers and the Cleveland Browns, with the Packers probably getting the nod due to being one of the most popular NFL teams in the country.

“We’re excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers, “said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy.

The New York Jets are adding another playmaker to their already great defense. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Jets have agreed to a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles that will see them land Pro Bowl linebacker Haason Reddick.

In order to acquire Reddick, the Jets are sending a conditional third-rounder in 2026 to Philly. The pick will become a second-round selection if Reddick ends up playing at least 67.5% of snaps this upcoming season and records at least 10 sacks.

The Jets have been on the market for a veteran edge rusher after losing Bryce Huff, who signed with the Eagles in free agency. They were interested in free agents Shaq Barrett and Jadeveon Clowney but missed out on both. It was at this point that they decided to take a trade route.

In Reddick, the Jets will be getting one of the most accomplished defensive players in the league in terms of getting to the opposing quarterback. In the past four seasons, the former Temple product notched 50.5 sacks, which is fourth-most in the league during that time span. He also made two Pro Bowls in each of the past two seasons.

Reddick is entering the final year of his three-year, $45 million contract and has previously asked to be traded after the Eagles refused to give him a new deal. It remains to be seen whether the Jets will end up giving him one straight away or wait until they are sure he can continue producing at a high level.

Former Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is set to be announced as the Philadelphia Eagles’ new offensive coordinator, ESPN reported. He will replace Brian Johnson, who was fired last week. This is the latest new hire of head coach Nick Sirianni, following Vic Fangio’s appointment as defensive coordinator.

Moore served as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator for a single season, before which he was at the Dallas Cowboys from 2019 to 2022. During this span, his offense ranked within the top four in points per game (27.7), yards per game (391), and third-down conversion percentage (44%).

While the Eagles got this season off to a fiery start with 10 wins in their first 11 games, the team slumped to an 11-6 record and suffered a 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round. They will hope that Moore will be able to breathe new life into a fading offense in pursuit of Super Bowl glory next season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers live to see another day in the playoffs. Facing the favored Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card game, the Bucs delivered a dominant performance that saw them grab a 9-32 win.

The Buccaneers advance to the Divisional Round, where they’ll face NFC North champions Detroit Lions.

The Bucs were the lone underdogs hosting a postseason game in the 2023 NFL Playoffs. The weakness of their division and 9-8 record didn’t project much confidence against the talented 11-6 Eagles. On top of that, Tampa Bay’s quarterback Baker Mayfield was questionable for the game while dealing with a rib injury.

Despite all of this, the Bucs and Mayfield rushed to a 0-10 lead in the first half and didn’t take the foot off the gas until late in the fourth quarter. Mayfield finished the game with 337 passing yards and three touchdowns while being careful with the football.

The Bucs’ defense also showed up ready to play, limiting the Eagles to 276 total yards while not allowing a single third-down conversion.

“We worked extremely hard to get a chance to be in the playoffs, and we just wanted an opportunity. Our guys came out and played really really well. … Once again, the defense played lights out. We’re happy, but we’ve still got more to go,” Mayfield said after the game.

The Bucs will once again be the underdogs when they travel to Detroit to face the Lions, but it appears that this team isn’t too concerned about that.

“We were underdogs, we’re going to be underdogs next week, too,” Tampa’s head coach Todd Bowles said. “We understand that. We embrace it. We like it.”

The Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown will not appear in Monday night’s playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to a right knee injury. “It was going to be a stretch for A.J. to play,” coach Nick Sirianni admitted. “He did everything he possibly could to get himself ready. He fought like crazy to try and do everything he could do.”

Brown was injured during the first quarter of the Eagles’ loss to the New York Giants last week. After Giants cornerback Nick McCloud punched the ball out of Brown’s hands, the two hit the turf. Brown subsequently rose gingerly, making his way to the medical tent. He was consequently ruled out of practice for the entire week.

Finishing the regular season with 106 receptions for 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns, Brown has been a key player for the Eagles throughout the season. During the Eagles’ previous win over the Bucs in September, Brown made nine catches for 131 yards.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ Pro Bowl corner Darius Slay reportedly underwent knee surgery this week. However, the 32-year-old player won’t miss significant time and is expected to return before the 2023 regular season wraps up.

Slay started 12 games this season and was considered the bright spot in Philly’s underperforming secondary. He made 57 tackles and 14 pass deflections while also getting two picks and returning one for a touchdown.

The Eagles didn’t officially announce Slay’s surgery, although they listed him on their injury report. When asked about the veteran corner, Philadelphia’s head coach, Nick Sirianni, confirmed that Slay will miss the upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks.

However, Sirianni refused to go into details about his plans for replacing Slay.

“Got the right guys. Got the right guys,” Sirianni said.

Last year’s undrafted free agent signing, Josh Jobe, is considered to have the best shot at getting the start against the Seahawks. Jobe, who already made three starts this year, has 20 tackles, four pass deflections, and one forced fumble in 13 games.

This year’s fourth-round selection, Kelee Ringo, could also get a nod. Ringo has mostly played on special teams so far in the season and has one fumble recovery to go with five tackles.

The Dallas Cowboys and their MVP-candidate quarterback, Dak Prescott, look unstoppable at the moment. Facing their NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles during Sunday Night Football, the Cowboys confirmed their status as one of the best teams in football with an impressive 33-13 blowout win.

The Eagles were looking to bounce back after a tough 19-42 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, but the Cowboys had other ideas. Dallas team was dominant from the get-go, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive and then forcing a fumble that resulted in a field goal.

The Cowboys scored two more touchdowns by the end of the half, while the Eagles only managed to respond with two field goals.

In the second half, Dallas took their foot off the gas, but that did not help the Eagles to make things more interesting. They did manage to score a touchdown, but it came at the defensive end. Their offense, led by quarterback Jalen Hurts, failed to score a single point in the last two quarters.

The Cowboys were led by Prescott, who had 271 passing yards and two touchdowns while running backs Tony Pollard and Rico Dowdle accounted for 105 yards on the ground and one touchdown. Kicker Brandon Aubrey has a particularly impressive game, going 4-of-4 on field goals and converting a 60-yarder.

Hurts, on the other hand, completed 18 out of 27 pass attempts for 197 yards. He also added 30 yards on the ground. Wideout A.J. Brown had another strong game for the Eagles, catching nine passes for 93 yards.

The Cowboys and the Eagles have the same record at 10-3, but the Cowboys moved up to the first place in the division. However, the Eagles can still win the NFC East if they win all of their remaining four games.

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday. The three-time Pro Bowler will retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent eight out of his 15 years in the league.

Jackson’s official retirement ceremony will take place on Friday, and he’ll serve as an honorary captain for the team when the Eagles face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

“DeSean Jackson was a dynamic playmaker who captivated Eagles fans with his game-breaking speed, unique skill set, and explosive play,” said Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie in a  team-released statement. “What made DeSean truly stand out during his accomplished 15-year career was his ability to make miraculous plays look routine.”

Jackson entered the league as the Eagles’ second-round pick in 2008. He established himself as one of the most dynamic players in the league early in his career, playing both as a wideout and punt returner. He was the NFL leader in yards per punt return in his sophomore year while also having four punts returned for a touchdown throughout his first three seasons.

Jackson spent six seasons with Philadelphia, earning three Pro Bowl nods, before embarking on stints with Washington and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He returned to Philly in 2019 for his second stint with the franchise before leaving again after the 2020 campaign. The 36-year-old last played in 2022, appearing in seven games for the Baltimore Ravens and making nine catches for 153 yards.

The Philadelphia Eagles apparently have such a deep roster that they can afford to release former first-round picks. The organization announced earlier this week that they have waived veteran defensive end Derek Barnett.

Barnett, who was the Eagles’ 14th overall pick in 2017, was in the final year of his contract that paid him $3.5 million in guaranteed money for 2023. If another team claims him off waivers, they will be on the hook for around $500K for the remainder of the campaign.

The Eagles released a statement in which they thanked Barnett for his contribution to the franchise.

“He has been a great teammate who always played with high energy and effort. We wish Derek nothing but the best,” the team wrote in a statement shared on their social media.

Eagles’ fans will remember Derek Barnett for his contribution to the franchise’s Super Bowl run in the 2017 season. As a rookie, Barnett helped the Eagles to a 13-3 regular-season record with 5.0 sacks, three fumble recoveries, and one defensive touchdown. He also had a key fumble recovery in a 41–33 Super Bowl LII win over the New England Patriots.

Barnett hasn’t been a solid player for the Eagles since but hasn’t been able to carve a more important role for himself. This was particularly the case in recent years as he struggled with injuries and inconsistency. He played in eight games in 2023 and only has three tackles to show for.
