Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson is set to miss his team’s opening game of the season due to a hamstring injury, coach Matt LaFleur confirmed. This comes as fellow receiver, Romeo Doubs, is listed as questionable also due to a hamstring setback.

Although new quarterback Jordan Love may be short on suppliers, coach LaFleur insists that his team will manage even if they are short-handed. “Well, we still had a whole week to kind of prepare for this,” La Fleur commented. “So I wouldn’t say that would alter the plan too drastically. I think any time you’re missing one of your better players, certainly throws a little curveball to it. But I mean, that happens all the time. Shoot, Chiefs had to deal with that last night.”

This is not the first time that Watson has faced a hamstring problem. The wide receiver was unavailable for three games last reason as a result of hamstring troubles.

The NFL announced on Monday that its 2025 NFL Draft will be held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the home of the Packers.

The league previously held drafts in New York City between 1965 and 2014 but decided to shake things in recent years. The 2023 NFL Draft was held in Kansas City, Missouri, while the 2024 NFL Draft is set to be hosted in Detroit, Michigan.

“With the help of numerous local partners on the ground, our prospects and fans will be treated to an incredible week-long experience that shows off the city of Green Bay and the state of Wisconsin,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Green Bay will be the smallest city to host the draft in the history of the NFL, with a population of 106,095, according to the most recent data. For comparison, more than 300,000 people attended the 2023 NFL Draft festivities.

The Packers tried to get the hosting of the draft for quite some time and were in the running for 2024 before Detroit was selected. This is likely the only major event that Green Bay can host, as the city’s infrastructure is considered unsuitable for Super Bowl despite having arguably the most legendary stadium in NFL Lambeau Field.

“The Packers have a rich and proud history that goes back to the early days of the NFL and are the only community-owned team,” said Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy. “That connection to our league’s heritage combined with the great passion Packers fans will bring will make the Draft a memorable event for those in attendance and NFL fans watching around the world.”

In exchange for the 39-year-old and their 2023 first-round (number 15) draft pick, the Packers will receive the Jets’ first-round pick (number 13) as well as a 2023 second-round pick (number 42), a 2023 sixth-round pick (number 207) and a conditional 2024 second-round pick should Rodgers play 65% of New York’s plays this season.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst gave few details on the impending deal, simply explaining to reporters that there were still some remaining details that needed to be worked out. He explained that Rodgers is still to take his physical with the Jets.

Gutekunst stressed the urgency of getting the Rodgers’ deal done before the draft. “It wouldn’t have been the end of the world,” Gutenkunst said, before continuing: “But at the same time, I think it would have certainly changed things quite a bit. So, getting it done was important. I just think certainly the capital for this year was very important, certainly more valuable than future stuff, for our football team. So, there were a number of reasons, but that’s why.”

Despite being cleared by Hall of Famer Joe Namath to wear the number 12 jersey, Rodgers is expected to wear the number eight.

Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy has indicated that his team is ready to move on from the Aaron Rodgers era should the player decide not to remain with the team.

While Murphy did not rule out the possibility that Rodgers could appear as the starting quarterback going into the new season, he indicated that the franchise is favoring Jordan Love for the role.

“He’s obviously a great player and four-time MVP, but I think it’s trying to find what he wants and what we want, and hopefully we can find a win-win situation,” Murphy stated in an interview at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association girls basketball tournament on Friday.

Murphy and the Packers have granted permission to Rodgers and the New York Jets to enter into discussions over a possible deal. The parties began talks earlier in the week when a Jets contingent met with Rodgers in California.

According to Murphy, the Packers are hoping that a solution regarding Rodgers’ future will be reached before Wednesday when the NFL free agency gets underway.

Aaron Rodgers was not permitted to participate in practice with the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday due to injury. In addition to still harboring an ongoing right thumb injury, the Packers quarterback has hurt his left knee.

Rodgers was sacked by the Miami Dolphins safety Eric Rowe before being fallen on by Christian Wilkins during the second quarter of Sunday’s game.

“I got a lot of body weight on my knee,” Rodgers said after the incident. “Had some extra flexion I haven’t known for the last 20 years. So just been doing rehab the last few days and feeling a lot better.”

Following his absence on Wednesday, Rodgers confirmed that he does expect to return to practice later this week, potentially on Thursday. Although the injury did not appear to impact Rodgers for the remainder of the Dolphins game, he revealed that fluids started to build up on his knee during the flight home.

The Packers will be hoping for Rodgers’ return ahead of Sunday’s must-win fixture against the Minnesota Vikings. While a win will not guarantee the Packers a playoff spot, the team must avoid defeat in order to still be in with a chance.

Elgton Jenkins has agreed to a four-year extension with the Green Bay Packers, a source revealed to ESPN on Friday. The deal, worth a reported $68 million is expected to include a $24 million signing bonus. Jenkins will remain with the Packers through the 2026 season as a result.

“We are very excited to be able to come to an agreement that keeps Elgton with the Packers,” general manager Brian Gutekunst stated after Jenkins signed his contract on Friday. “Since the moment he walked into the building, Elgton has been a core member of this franchise while displaying an uncommon versatility, unselfishness and toughness. He’s a tremendous leader and teammate and he has earned everything that has come to him.”

Capable of playing at either guard or tackle, Elgton will become the second highest-paid guard in the league should he remain in that position, trailing only Quenton Nelson of the Indianapolis Colts.

Selected by the Packers in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Jenkins was a Pro Bowl selection in his position of left guard in 2020.

The Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst revealed on Monday that the team would like Aaron Rodgers to remain next season. Well, certainly that’s an offseason-type kind of decision, but surely, yeah,” Gutenkunst replied when asked by the press about Rodgers’ future at the team.

Rodgers is currently on a three-year, $150 million contract with the team that runs through the 2024 season. The deal includes a $58.3 million guaranteed bonus for the 2023 season which is only voided upon Rodgers’ retirement should it happen before the end of the 2023 season.

According to Gutenkunst, there is still no guarantee that the quarterback will remain with the Packers next year. He added that Rodgers has not yet expressed whether or not he would like to remain with the team. Ultimately, the pair will have to discuss Rodgers’ future during the offseason, Gutenhunst admitted.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur is adamant that he would like Rodgers to remain with the squad next season despite the 39-year-old player’s numerous injury woes over the past season. The veteran has played through a broken thumb as well as a rib injury this season.

There are officially no unbeaten teams in the 2021 NFL season after the Arizona Cardinals suffered a 23-20 loss in their Thursday Night Football clash against short-handed Green Bay Packers.

The Packers were heavy underdogs entering the game after it became clear that their top three wideout options Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling would be unavailable. They also had issues on other positions, missing several key players like corner Jaire Alexander, outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith, and left tackle David Bakhtiari. Still, Green Bay managed to overcome all problems and get on top thanks to an efficient ground game and several huge plays by their banged-up defense.

Running back duo AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones carried the offense, combining for 137 rushing yards. Jones, who had a rushing touchdown, was also the Packers’ main weapon in the passing game with seven catches for 51 yards.

Veteran Randall Cobb, who took the No. 1 WR role against the Cardinals, also had a big impact. While only having three catches for 15 yards, Cobb was reliable when it counted the most and finished the night with two receiving TDs.

However, the hero for the Packers was none other than corner Rasul Douglas. With 15 seconds left on the clock, Douglas intercepted the Cardinals’ quarterback Kyler Murray in the end zone and won the game for his team. To make things even better, the 26-year-old previously spent time on Arizona’s practice squad before being signed by Green Bay.

After the game, Douglas received praise from his teammates, including star QB Aaron Rodgers:

“How special is this game? Guy’s on the street, comes in, starts for us, finishes the game out for us. Amazing,” Rodgers said.

Despite finishing the last season with a 13-3 record, Green Bay Packers are viewed as an average team entering 2020. The team’s star quarterback Aaron Rodgers seems to be aware of this perception, saying recently that Packers are “kind of flying under the radar.”

But, while many would take an issue with their team being overlooked in Super Bowl conversations, Rodgers looks to an opportunistic side of things.

“I think the beauty is there’s a lot of conversation about other teams,” said Rodgers while talking with reporters on Wednesday. “I like where we’re at as far as kind of flying under the radar even though we went 13-3 last year. We’ve got a chance to prove what kind of team we are starting the season out on Sunday, and I look forward to the opportunity.”

It is safe to say that Green Bay Packers benefited from a weak division and some lucky breaks during the 2019 regular season, but a similar thing could happen this year. Chicago Bears will still have struggling Mitch Trubinsky at QB, Minnesota Vikings are fresh from completely retooling their defense, while Detroit Lions are … well, Detroit Lions.

However, the Packers still haven’t addressed some of their glaring issues from last season, and this could come back to bite them at some point this season. They have depth issues in several positions, but their biggest need remains a wide receiver. Green Bay didn’t have much past Davante Adams in 2019, and it will be the same thing this year as they failed to bring in a dependable No.2 while passing on several talented wideouts in the draft.

Still, we shouldn’t count out the Packers completely as long as they have Aaron Rodgers under center. Considering the franchise’s latest moves, Rodgers’ time at Lambeau Field is coming to an end, but until that happens, Green Bay shouldn’t be overlooked.

In previous years, Green Bay Packers rarely took part in the free agency, opting to construct their roster via the draft and focus the attention to their own free agent. Well, it seems that this approach is now out of the door.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Green Bay added two highly coveted players on the defense in outside Linebacker Za’Darius Smith and safety Adrian Amos. Smith, who previously played for Baltimore Ravens, will reportedly get a four-year, $66 million deal while Amos, who played with Chicago Bears in 2018, will ink a four-year, $37 million contract.

Rapoport also reports that Packers’ new general manager Brian Gutekunst won’t stop there. Gutekunst is working on a deal to get former Washington Redskins edge rusher Preston Smith on a four-year, $52 million deal.

Za’Darius Smith was a fourth-round pick by Ravens in 2014 and immediately impacted the team by playing 15 games his rookie year and having 30 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and two passes defended. Smith’s career stats include 119 tackles, 18.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles.

Adrian Amos was a fifth-round pick in 2015 by Green Bay’s bitter rivals Chicago Bears. During his time with the Bears, Amos established himself as one of the more reliable safeties in football, playing a total of 60 games so far. His career stats include 274 tackles, 2.0 sacks, three interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

Preston Smith has also proved himself as an impactful player since entering the league in 2015 as a second round pick. His NFL stats include 167 tackles, 24.5 sacks, four interceptions and four forced fumbles.
