The Minnesota Vikings are yet to confirm the quarterback who is going to start in Week 18’s game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday night. With an outside chance of clinching a playoff spot depending on other results, a win is crucial for the Vikings as they fight for survival.

“We’re going to take a look at it,” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said about picking a quarterback to start against the Lions. “The decision we’ll make will be based upon that position putting our group in a place to try to move the football and have success. We did not do that tonight. We’ll take a look at it, and all options are on the table.” O’Connell made his statement after the Vikings slumped to a 33-10 loss against the Green Bay Packers, making it that much more difficult for the Minnesotans to clinch a playoff spot.

Rookie quarterback Jaren Hall started the Lions game, however, O’Connell decided to bench him at halftime for the more experienced Nick Mullens. A fifth-round 2023 draft pick, Hall’s previous start in Week 9 against Atlanta was cut short when he suffered a concussion, leaving the 28-31 victory at halftime.

The Minnesota Vikings’ standout tight end T.J. Hockenson suffered a torn ACL and MLC in Sunday’s 30-24 loss to the Detroit Lions and will be out for the remainder of the season. The news was announced by Vikings’ head coach, Kevin O’Connell, during a press conference on Tuesday.

O’Connell also confirmed that linebacker pass rusher D.J. Wonnum is dealing with a torn quad and will miss the rest of the 2023 campaign.

“Two guys that will be difficult to overcome their loss, but we’re gonna have to have guys step up, and hopefully still have those guys involved and around or team, because they are, like I said, leaders, and very, very important to our locker room,” O’Connell said.

Hockenson suffered the injury in the third quarter of the Lions game after being tackled following a catch. Wonnum went down in the fourth quarter of the same game during a pass rush attempt.

The news is a big blow for the Vikings and their hopes of making the playoffs. Hockenson has been the key player on offense for Minnesota, recording 95 receptions for a team-best 960 yards and five touchdowns. Wonnum, on the other hand, had 62 tackles, 8.0 sacks, six pass deflections, and 15 QB hits.

The Vikings are currently 7-8 and play the Green Bay Packers and the Lions in their final two games of the season.

Looking for a spark after scoring just three points against the Las Vegas Raiders last week, the Minnesota Vikings are making a switch at the quarterback position. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell announced on Tuesday that veteran Nick Mullens will step in as the starter instead of journeyman Joshua Dobbs.

After losing Kirk Cousins to a season-ending injury, the Vikings handed their offense to rookie Jaren Hall in Week 9 before Dobbs stepped in Week 10. Dobbs played great in his first two games but then threw four interceptions in a 10-12 loss to the Chicago Bears and mightily struggled against the Raiders.

Dobbs was benched late in the Raiders’ game with Mullens taking over and leading the team’s only scoring drive that was enough to help them get a 3-0 win.

“There’s a reason we went out and got Nick when we did: to really solidify that position,” O’Connell said about the QB change. “I love everything about his preparation. He allows us to go prepare with a plan and doesn’t need a whole lot of reps to then go in and execute that plan.”

Nick Mullens entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Miss in 2017. He spent the first four years of his pro career with the San Francisco 49ers before making stops with the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, and Las Vegas Raiders.

The Vikings acquired Millens in a trade with the Raiders in 2022 and locked him to a two-year extension during the offseason. The 28-year-old has 5,168 career passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions.

The Minnesota Vikings need all the help they can get on offense after losing their starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins, to a season-ending ACL injury. However, that help won’t come from their star wideout Justin Jefferson, at least not yet.

Jefferson suffered a hamstring injury in a Week 5 game against the Kansas City Chiefs and hasn’t played since. He started practicing last week, which was taken as a sign that he would come off the Injured Reserve soon. However, in announcing their roster moves on Saturday, the Vikings revealed that Jefferson will remain out.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Jefferson said that he will be the one who will decide when he returns to action.

“I’m the main person that’s going to make the decision,” Jefferson said. “I’m the person that’s going out there running, I’m the person that’s putting my body on the line to win games and do things for this organization. I know how I feel, I know how my hamstring’s feeling. We’re going to weigh in on all of the different opinions and what everyone has to say, but at the end of the day, I’m the one that’s going out there.”

Despite playing without Jefferson and lately without Cousins, the Vikings managed to stay afloat in the NFC North and remain in the playoff race. They are 6-4 and currently riding a five-game winning streak. They will have a chance to extend it in Week 11 against the surging Denver Broncos.

This echoes the stance of the Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell, who claimed that it would be “a little aggressive” to play Jefferson in Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

“The hamstring is a difficult injury just because it lingers and it comes back from time to time if you don’t put the right treatment into it,” Jefferson explained in what was his first public statement since October 8. I don’t want to go out there at 80 or 90 percent and have the chance of hurting it again.”

Injured due to slipping on the slit-film artificial turf at U.S. Bank Stadium, Jefferson’s earliest return date would be on November 19, when the Vikings travel to face the Denver Broncos. The deadline for Jefferson to be added to the active roster is November 29, when the Vikings have a bye week.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins underwent surgery on Wednesday morning to repair his torn right Achilles tendon. Cousins revealed on social media that his surgery was a success before asking fans for their “continued prayers” as he embarks on the recovery process.

Cousins was placed on injured reserve after the Vikings’ 24-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Before his injury, coach Kevin O’Connell praised Cousins for what he considered to be the quarterback’s best season of his career to date.

Up until Week 8, the Vikings star quarterback was tied for the most touchdown passes in the league with 18 while ranking second in passing yards (2,331) and had the 10th-best QBR (63.5).

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins could see his season come to a premature end after he suffered a right Achilles tear. The Vikings star was injured during his team’s 24-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, helping them to turn a three-game losing streak at the start of the season into a 4-4 record.

Cousins’ injury came with 9 minutes and 50 seconds to go in the fourth quarter when his foot buckled before he was taken down by Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark. The quarterback limped off the field immediately after. Rookie quarterback Jaren Hall filled in for Cousins for the remainder of the game.

“It was just weird,” Vikings center Garrett Bradbury said about the moment he saw Cousins leave the field.  “Whenever the Vikings are out there, Kirk’s out there.” The Vikings are expected to only know the extent of Cousins’ injury after he undergoes additional testing.

Sources revealed that doctors expect Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson to be sidelined for between four and six weeks. The All-Pro was placed on injured reserve last week and is expected to undergo imaging tests in four weeks to determine when he may return to action.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell explained that while he does not expect the 2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year to miss the rest of the season, he is unsure of the star’s exact return date. “With hamstrings, I don’t want to speculate on exactly when it will be,” the Vikings coach said with regard to Jefferson’s return. “But I know he feels pretty good considering where some guys feel at this point in the process, having been [injured] just this past Sunday.”

With Jefferson unavailable, wide receivers N’Keal Harry and Trishton Jackson have been elevated from the Vikings’ practice squad. They will back up starters K.J. Osborn and rookie Jordan Addison.

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback Kirk Cousins isn’t too concerned about the trade rumors that have been surrounding him for the better part of the 2023 season. He just wants to improve the team’s disappointing 1-4 record.

Cousins has been a trade candidate for a while now, considering Minnesota’s poor performances and the fact that he is set to become a free agent next offseason. But during a chat with reporters earlier this week, the 35-year-old player said that he isn’t wasting time thinking about that.

“You know, I am just very focused on the Bears and going 1-0 this week,” Cousins said. “And anything else is not worth my time or energy or attention.”

The Vikings might be motivated to trade Cousins in order to get some draft compensation and position themselves to draft one of the QB prospects in a loaded 2024 NFL Draft. The team isn’t likely to bounce back this season, considering their star wideout Justin Jefferson will miss at least three weeks with a hamstring injury.

The issue for Minnesota is that they can’t simply move Cousins wherever they want. The veteran has a no-trade clause and can veto any deal that isn’t to his liking.

For his part, Cousins has played really well in the first five weeks. He is completing 67.2% of his passes while throwing for 1,498 passing yards and league-leading 13 touchdowns.

The Minnesota Vikings have addressed their underwhelming rushing game by making a trade with the Los Angeles Rams that saw them acquire running back Cam Akers.

As part of the agreement, the Vikings will be getting Akers and a conditional seventh-round pick while sending a sixth-rounder to the Rams. The two teams will also swap sixth-round picks in 2026.

The Vikings moved on from their Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook in the offseason, deciding to put their faith in backup Alexander Mattison for the upcoming season. However, Mattison struggled to make his mark in the first two weeks, rushing only for 62 yards while fumbling the ball twice in a 34-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Speaking with reports on Thursday, the Vikings’ offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said that the acquisition of Akers doesn’t mean that Mattison lost his starting job. However, he reiterated the team’s determination to improve their running game, which produced a league-worst 69 rushing yards so far in 2023.

“We know we have to be better in the run game,” Phillips added. “A lot of that starts with us, and the players fundamentally. All those things we’ve addressed, and from what I saw [Wednesday] in the first practice, I think it will improve dramatically.”

Akers rushed for 1,443 yards and 10 touchdowns since entering the league in 2020. He entered this season as the Rams’ starting RB but ended up losing the job to Kyren Williams by Week 2.
