Atletico Madrid could make a move for Newcastle United’s midfielder Miguel Almiron this summer. According to recent reports, the La Liga side identified the 26-year-old Paraguayan as one of their top targets in the upcoming transfer window.

Almiron, who previously starred for MLS side Atlanta United, has been playing in Premier League since 2018. He particularly impressed in 2019/20, scoring seven goals in 37 games and emerging as one of the best players for struggling Newcastle.

Atletico scouted Almiron several times this season, and they are convinced he would be a great fit for them. They now want to act fast and secure the player’s services before facing competition from other top European clubs.

Following the reports, Almiron’s agent Daniel Campo confirmed the interest in his client and said that he even talked with Atletico’s manager Diego Simeone. However, Campo added that “there is nothing official from the club.”

Miguel Almiron built his reputation in MLS, where he was one of the league’s best players during his time with Atlanta. Almiron helped Atlanta win MLS Cup in 2018 while earning consecutive All-Star appearances and MLS Best XI selections.

In 2018, Almiron broke the record for the most expensive MLS player, after Newcastle paid Atlanta around $25 million for his services.

Newcastle United’s midfielder Miguel Almiron will be out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury, the team has announced on Wednesday. According to Newcastle’s statement, Almiron over the weekend in Premier League clash against Southampton.

“Miguel Almiron will miss the rest of the season after suffering a hamstring injury in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Southampton,” – the team said in a statement. “The 25-year-old was withdrawn in the 64th minute against the Saints and having been assessed by the club’s medical staff, it has been confirmed that he will not be fit for the Magpies’ final three matches of the campaign.”

Almiron joined Newcastle in January 2019 after spending the previous two years in MLS with Atlanta United. Since then he played 10 games in England but failed to make a contribution via goals or assists.

The hamstring injury puts Miguel Almiron in danger of missing upcoming Copa America with the Paraguay national team. The competition starts on June 14, which gives the 25-year-old just over a month to make a full recovery. He represented Paraguay 14 times so far.

Atlanta United’s midfielder Miguel Almiron is probably counting his last days in the MLS. This talented 24-year-old Paraguay international sparked the interest of several European high profile clubs, who already started to inquire about his services. And, while Almiron still doesn’t have a preference when it comes to the club he would like to play for next, he would prefer it was based in England.

He told ESPN FC in a recent interview that he would rather play in the Premier League than Spain’s La Liga or Italy’s Seria A.

Yes, I really like the English style of football for the dynamic play and the competitiveness these is,” – explained Almiron. “I think all of the teams are very good and they’re all fighting. I think that aspect helps you as a footballer.

Most soccer players from South America take a different route and choose La Liga as their destination. This is because, in Spain, the teams gravitate towards more technique based soccer, while in England, the game has a more physical nature. However, Miguel Almiron doesn’t consider this to be an issue and thinks he would adapt quickly.

Yes. I’m sure that if the time comes whether I will do poorly or well, but I’m really confident in the work I do,” – he said when asked whether Premier League soccer would suit him. “If it’s the right time to go, I will try to do things in the best way to ensure it goes well.

It is highly likely that Miguel Almiron gets his whish true in January since Premier League clubs Arsenal, Tottenham, and Newcastle United have been particularly keen on his services.

Almiron played 36 games in MLS this season, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists and helping Atlanta United to reach MLS Cup Finals.

Atlanta United’s attacking midfielder Miguel Almiron is one of the best soccer players in the MLS in the last couple of years, which makes him the target for many European clubs. In the past months, Almiron was linked with a move to several Premier League teams, including Arsenal and West Ham, but neither of them managed to make a satisfactory offer to Atlanta. Now Tottenham decided to join the race for the 24-year-old as well.

According to various Paraguayan media outlets, Tottenham is considering making a formal approach to Atlanta United for the player and is willing to pay $28 million to secure his signature. While this figure would make Miguel Almiron the subject of most expensive outgoing transfer in MLS history, it is unclear whether United would be willing to accept the offer.

After it was rumored that Arsenal is willing to offer $14.5 million for Almiron, Atlanta’s president Darren Eales said that he wouldn’t consider such low offers.

It would have to take at least triple that for me to even get out of bed and think about any bids for Almiron,” – Eales said in one recent interview.

Miguel Almiron joined Atlanta United in 2016 from Lanús in a transfer worth around $8 million. In his first season with the club, Almiron played 30 games in which he scored nine goals and provided 14 assists. These impressive performances brought him MLS Newcomer of the Year award, while he was named to MLS All-Star team and MLS Best XI. He has even better statistical numbers in 2018, having scored 12 goals to go with 14 assists.
