Atletico Madrid could make a move for Newcastle United’s midfielder Miguel Almiron this summer. According to recent reports, the La Liga side identified the 26-year-old Paraguayan as one of their top targets in the upcoming transfer window.

Almiron, who previously starred for MLS side Atlanta United, has been playing in Premier League since 2018. He particularly impressed in 2019/20, scoring seven goals in 37 games and emerging as one of the best players for struggling Newcastle.

Atletico scouted Almiron several times this season, and they are convinced he would be a great fit for them. They now want to act fast and secure the player’s services before facing competition from other top European clubs.

Following the reports, Almiron’s agent Daniel Campo confirmed the interest in his client and said that he even talked with Atletico’s manager Diego Simeone. However, Campo added that “there is nothing official from the club.”

Miguel Almiron built his reputation in MLS, where he was one of the league’s best players during his time with Atlanta. Almiron helped Atlanta win MLS Cup in 2018 while earning consecutive All-Star appearances and MLS Best XI selections.

In 2018, Almiron broke the record for the most expensive MLS player, after Newcastle paid Atlanta around $25 million for his services.
