Sevilla’s veteran center-back Sergio Ramos will become a free agent in the summer, and his next destination could be the United States.

Soccer insider Ekrem Konur Konur reports that several MLS clubs are considering the move for Ramos, with Los Angeles Galaxy and Inter Miami CF being at the top of the list.

Ramos’ first choice would be to stay with Sevilla, but it is unclear whether the club feels the same way. While they respect everything that Ramos has done for the club, they are also keen on getting younger at the back. Additionally, the club is trying to cut costs, and removing his $2 million salary from the books would help the cause.

Ramos was already linked with MLS last summer when his contract with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain expired. At the time, he was reportedly considering a move to LAFC but ended up taking the opportunity to return to Sevilla. Ramos is a Sevilla youth academy graduate and played his first two seasons as a pro with the club.

Sergio Ramos is best known for his time with Real Madrid, where he played for 16 seasons and made 671 appearances. He won more than 20 trophies during that time, including five La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies.

Atletico Madrid’s veteran midfielder Axel Witsel is receiving interest from MLS. According to reputable soccer journalist Ekrem Konur, Inter Miami and LA Galaxy are monitoring Witsel’s situation and are keen on bringing him to the United States.

Witsel was linked with an MLS move back in 2022 when LAFC and Galaxy were interested in his service. At the time, the former Belgian international decided to remain in Europe, signing with Atletico.

Witsel’s contract with Atletico expires in the summer, and there is currently no indication that La Liga will offer him a new one. However, the player stated on multiple occasions that he would like to remain with the Spanish club.

“It’s the last year of my contract, let’s see what happens. I don’t have the key to the situation, but I’m very happy here,” said Witsel in a recent interview with Marca.

Witsel played as a midfielder almost exclusively throughout his entire career but ended up making a switch to central defender since arriving to Atletico. This proved to be a great decision, as he became an undisputable starter for the club. He played 42 games in 2023-24 and made 37 starts.

Prior to joining Atletico, Witsel also played for Standard Liege, Benfica, and Borussia Dortmund, among other clubs. He also made 130 appearances for Belgium’s national team before retiring from international soccer in 2023.

The Los Angeles Galaxy made a significant splash on Tuesday by announcing the acquisition of Brazilian forward Gabriel Pec. The 22-year-old player will come to MLS from Brasileiro Serie A side Vasco da Gama.

While the MLS side didn’t announce the financial terms of the deal, the transfer is reportedly worth $10 million. This makes Pec the club’s record signing, surpassing the $9.4 million spent on Chicharito Hernandez in 2020.

Pec signed a five-year contract with Galaxy. He will occupy the Designated Player spot that was left vacant by Chicharito, who left the club after the 2023 season.

Pec played 50 games with Vasco da Gama in 2023, scoring 14 goals and adding six assists. He has been monitored by several MLS clubs in recent months, including Portland Timbers, but Galaxy ended up being the quickest to get the deal done.

“Gabriel has been a key contributor for one of the biggest clubs in Brazil’s Serie A, and we are beyond excited that he is choosing to join the Galaxy as the next step in his burgeoning career,” Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said in a statement.

Gabriel Pec made his senior debut with Vasco da Gama in 2019 and has since scored 26 goals and dished 14 assists in 178 matches. He is also a Brazil youth international, playing three games for the country’s U23 side.

LA Galaxy have secured the transfer of attacking midfielder Gabriel Pec from Vasco Da Gama, paying a club-record fee of $10 million. This breaks the previous record transfer fee that Galaxy paid to lure in Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez from Sevilla in 2020.

In addition, the Los Angeles-based team could pay an additional $1.5 million if certain incentives are met, while Vasco Da Gama will retain 30% of Pec’s rights if the player is subsequently transferred to another team.

Pec proved to be a key player for Vasco in Brazil’s Serie A last year, scoring 14 goals and providing five assists across 50 games. The Brazilian forward forms part of the Galaxy’s plan to rebuild in 2024 following several disappointing seasons in the MLS. The team last won the MLS Cup in 2014.

Nothing went right for the LA Galaxy at the start of the 2023 MLS season. The Los Angeles team won just two out of their 14 games and sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. In an attempt to shake things up and salvage their season, Galaxy decided to fire their president Chris Klein.

The team announced the news on Tuesday while revealing that head coach and sporting director Greg Vanney will now lead all soccer operations. Galaxy also shared statements by CEO Dan Beckerman and Klein.

“We believe it is in the best interest of the Club to make a change and begin a comprehensive process to seek new leadership that will return the Club to the level that our fans and partners expect, “said Beckerman explained the move.

Chris Klein took over as LA Galaxy’s president in 2013 and won MLS Cup in his second season at the job. However, it was mostly disappointing for Galaxy fans since then, as the team made only four playoff trips and failed to go past the conference semifinals despite having one of the biggest payrolls in the league.

Klein was aware of the pressure on him and addressed it in a mail sent out to fans before the 2023 season started. At the time, he promised he would step down if the Galaxy missed the postseason, but the poor performances and growing unrest among fans expedited the process.

LA Galaxy’s talented defender Julian Araujo had everything lined up to make a move to La Liga powerhouse Barcelona during the January transfer window. However, a computer error halted the transfer and kept Araujo in MLS for at least six more months.

Galaxy and Barca finalized the agreement that would send Araujo to Spain on January 31st. The right-back would first join the Catalan’s reserve side but train with the first team. But on February 1st, the clubs were notified by FIFA that the transfer was nixed as the paperwork wasn’t submitted in time.

According to Barcelona’s sporting director Mateu Alemany, paperwork was sent 18 seconds after the end of the transfer deadline.

“We did not arrive on time because of a computer error,” Alemany shared. “It seems that the systems fell, but for only 18 seconds.”

Barcelona was keen on Araujo as a replacement for Hector Bellerin, who departed for Sporting Lisbon on the final day of the transfer window. It is possible that the Catalan club will circle back to the Mexican international when the transfer window opens up again in the summer.

Araujo joined the Galaxy’s soccer academy in 2018 as a 16-year-old. He quickly advanced through the club’s ranks and made his professional debut in 2019. Since then, he has played 100 games for the LA team, scoring one goal and dishing 20 assists.

Another high-profile player from Europe is arriving to MLS this summer. According to multiple reports, LA Galaxy is on the verge of completing a deal for Barcelona midfielder Riqui Puig.

Reportedly, Galaxy will get Puig on a free transfer, but Barca will be entitled to a percentage of any future transfer earnings the MLS side makes. The 22-year-old Spaniard is set to arrive in the United States in the next couple of days to finalize the move. The MLS transfer window closes on Thursday.

Barca has been trying to offload Puig for a while now, but there were hardly any takers for the player who was labeled as the “next big thing” in La Liga just several years ago. Eventually, the Catalan giants had to be content with just having his wages off their books.

Riqui Puig spent his youth career with Barcelona’s La Masia academy before making his debut for the club’s reserve team Barcelona B in 2018. Puig would make his first team debut later that year in Copa del Rey while finishing the 2018–19 campaign with two La Liga appearances.

Many believed at this point that Puig was set for big things, but this didn’t prove to be the case. He never managed to cement his place in the first team, causing Barca’s new head coach Xavi to deem him surplus to requirements shortly after his arrival.

FIFA announced on Monday that it has given Julian Araujo the all-clear to switch his national team eligibility from the United States to Mexico. The LA Galaxy defender made his only appearance for the U.S. national team last December, playing at the position of right-back during a 6-0 thumping of El Salvador.

Born in Lompoc, California, Araujo represented the United States at several age-group levels up until the under-23 national team. This includes an appearance for the under-23 American team against Mexico during their Tokyo Olympics qualification game in March 2021.

After winning the match 1-0, Mexico went on to win the bronze medal at the Olympic competition.

Due to being a dual national with Mexican family ties, Araujo was eligible to switch national teams according to FIFA regulations. He was yet to appear in a competitive game for the United States Men’s National Team.

The Mexico national team is currently at the top of the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers standings, with five wins and two draws in seven games. Mexico is next set to face Canada on October 8 before taking on Honduras and El Salvador on October 11 and 14 respectively.

The Los Angeles Galaxy unveiled a bronze statue of club legend Landon Donovan on Sunday. The statue, located outside Dignity Health Sports Park, has been placed near a similar statue of David Beckham which was inaugurated in 2019.

According to MLS Don Garber, Donovan was an essential figure in the development of soccer, not only with the LA Galaxy but across the United States as a whole.

“If Landon didn’t make the decision to come back to Major League Soccer at the time that he did and come to the Galaxy in 2005 [and] tell the world that MLS was his league, the Galaxy was his club, [that] he was going to help build soccer in his country, we would not be where we are today,” Garber stated at the unveiling ceremony.

Donovan expressed his delight at being awarded a statue in his honor. He expressed appreciation for the 10 years that he spent with the Galaxy, as well as the support he received from the club, his teammates, and fans.

During their time at the club, Donovan and Beckham provided Los Angeles with the most dominant four-year run in MLS history, earning two Supporters’ Shields and two MLS trophies in three MLS Finals appearances.
