Atletico Madrid’s veteran midfielder Axel Witsel is receiving interest from MLS. According to reputable soccer journalist Ekrem Konur, Inter Miami and LA Galaxy are monitoring Witsel’s situation and are keen on bringing him to the United States.

Witsel was linked with an MLS move back in 2022 when LAFC and Galaxy were interested in his service. At the time, the former Belgian international decided to remain in Europe, signing with Atletico.

Witsel’s contract with Atletico expires in the summer, and there is currently no indication that La Liga will offer him a new one. However, the player stated on multiple occasions that he would like to remain with the Spanish club.

“It’s the last year of my contract, let’s see what happens. I don’t have the key to the situation, but I’m very happy here,” said Witsel in a recent interview with Marca.

Witsel played as a midfielder almost exclusively throughout his entire career but ended up making a switch to central defender since arriving to Atletico. This proved to be a great decision, as he became an undisputable starter for the club. He played 42 games in 2023-24 and made 37 starts.

Prior to joining Atletico, Witsel also played for Standard Liege, Benfica, and Borussia Dortmund, among other clubs. He also made 130 appearances for Belgium’s national team before retiring from international soccer in 2023.
