The Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers will play their Week 1 game of the 2024 season in Brazil, according to the NFL’s announcement on Wednesday. This will be the first time in league history that a regular-season game is being played in Brazil.

The Eagles and the Packers will square off on Friday, September 6, in the city of São Paulo at the Corinthians Arena, home of soccer club SC Corinthians. The league hasn’t scheduled a Friday night game in Week 1 since 1970.

“With over 35 million passionate fans in Brazil, the Friday night 2024 regular season opener in São Paulo will bring an incredible energy – marking a historic moment for our sport internationally,” said Gerrit Meier, Managing Director and Head of NFL International.

NFL’s International Series will feature four more games in 2024. Carolina Panthers will play one of its home games in Munich, Germany, while Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, and Minnesota Vikings are scheduled to play in London.

The Eagles were previously revealed as a designated team to play in Brazil, but their opponent wasn’t revealed at the time. It came down to the Packers and the Cleveland Browns, with the Packers probably getting the nod due to being one of the most popular NFL teams in the country.

On Monday, the Green Bay Packers announced that they are releasing All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari. Before being cut, Bakhtiari was the longest-tenured player on the Packers’ roster.

The Packers saying goodbye to one of their franchise legends was likely a financial decision as the move comes with $21 million in cap savings. Green Bay will also incur a dead cap hit of $19 million.

“David is one of the best offensive linemen that has played in the NFL during my time in the league. His consistency and approach to his craft is unmatched,” said head coach Matt LaFleur in a statement. “David’s presence extended beyond his impact on the field, as he was a cornerstone of the Packers in the locker room when I arrived and was a great resource to our young team.

Bakhtiari was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft and proved to be an absolute steal for the Packers. Becoming a starter in his rookie year, Bakhtiari went on to receive five All-Pro selections and three Pro Bowl nods by the time the 2020 season wrapped up. During that campaign, he also signed a four-year, $105.5 million contract extension, which made him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

However, Bakhtiari’s career has taken a drastic turn since then. He missed all but one game in 2021 due to an ACL injury and was limited to 11 games the season after. In 2023, he continued to experience problems with his knee and ended up playing just one game.

Despite the injury issues, Bakhtiari is expected to garner significant interest in the free agent market. The New York Jets are mentioned as a possible destination where he would reunite with his former Packers teammate, Aaron Rodgers.

The Green Bay Packers could be without their star corner, Jaire Alexander, for the upcoming Wild Card game against the Dallas Cowboys. Alexander rolled his ankle during practice on Wednesday and is officially listed as “questionable.”

Speaking with reporters on Friday, Packers’ head coach Matt LaFleur said that Alexander taking the field against the Cowboys will be a game-time decision.

“We don’t know,” LaFleur said. “We’re just giving him up to game time to figure it out. He will legitimately be a game-time decision.”

Alexander decided by himself to join the Packers’ captains for the coin toss before the start of the Panthers game and be the one to make the call. While the 26-year-old player correctly called tails, he also said his team wants to be on defense. This would give Carolina the first possession both in the first and the second half.

Instead of accepting Alexander’s choice, official Alex Kemp asked him to clarify whether he wanted to “defer” the choice to the second half. This would mean that the Packers would be on defense in the first half but can then pick to get the first possession in the second half. Kemp did this because LaFleur previously informed him that Green Bay wants to defer if they win the coin toss.

As a result of Alexander’s actions, the Packers suspended him for the upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings for “conduct detrimental to the team.” Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said in a statement that the decision wasn’t easy or taken lightly.

“As an organization, we have an expectation that everyone puts the team first,” said Gutekunst. “While we are disappointed, we had a good conversation with Jaire this morning and fully expect him to learn from this as we move forward together. However, that didn’t stop Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield from becoming only the second quarterback in history to have a perfect passer rating at the legendary stadium in Sunday’s 34-20 victory over the Packers.

Mayfield delivered arguably his best performance of the season against the Packers. The Green Bay Packers say they are confident that the 2020’s first-round pick Jordan Love can be their quarterback of the future. But they are not confident enough to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, instead of taking on the fifth-year option, the Packers took an alternative approach and gave Love a one-year extension. This allows them not to tie up a lot of money in Love but still have him under control if he ends up having a promising 2023 campaign.

Under the fifth-year option, Love would be guaranteed a salary of $20.272 million in 2024. Under his extension, however, he is guaranteed only $13.5 million. Reportedly, the number can go up to $22.5 million, probably based on Love’s performances and the number of games he plays.  

The Packers traded up in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft to select Jordan Love with the No. 26 pick. The Utah State product didn’t see much action in the past three seasons, playing 10 games and making only one start due to the presence of franchise legend Aaron Rodgers. Love completed 50-of-83 throws as a pro, passing for 606 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Love should have no problem seeing action in 2023. Rodgers left the franchise last week to join the New York Jets, and Green Bay doesn’t have any other viable option under center. The only other QBs on their roster are this year’s fifth-round pick Sean Clifford and journeyman Danny Etling.

Green Bay Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been traded to the New York Jets, sources confirmed on Monday. In exchange for the 39-year-old and their 2023 first-round (number 15) draft pick, the Packers will receive the Jets’ first-round pick (number 13) as well as a 2023 second-round pick (number 42), a 2023 sixth-round pick (number 207) and a conditional 2024 second-round pick should Rodgers play 65% of New York’s plays this season.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst gave few details on the impending deal, simply explaining to reporters that there were still some remaining details that needed to be worked out. He explained that Rodgers is still to take his physical with the Jets.

Gutekunst stressed the urgency of getting the Rodgers’ deal done before the draft. “It wouldn’t have been the end of the world,” Gutenkunst said, before continuing: “But at the same time, I think it would have certainly changed things quite a bit. So, getting it done was important. I just think certainly the capital for this year was very important, certainly more valuable than future stuff, for our football team. So, there were a number of reasons, but that’s why.”

Despite being cleared by Hall of Famer Joe Namath to wear the number 12 jersey, Rodgers is expected to wear the number eight.
