The Dallas Stars realize they have an opportunity to go all the way in the 2023-24 season. That is a major reason why the Stars pulled off a trade with the Calgary Flames that saw them landing veteran defenseman Chris Tanev.

The trade will see the Stars sending prospect Artem Grushnikov, a 2024 second-round pick, a conditional third-round selection in 2026 to Calgary for Tanev. As part of the transaction, the Flames will retain 50% of Tanev’s salary and cap hit, while the other 50% will fall onto the New Jersey Devils, who received a 2026 fourth-round pick from Dallas in exchange.

Tanev appeared in 56 games this season, contributing with one goal and 13 assists for a total of 14 points. He is currently in the final year of his four-year, $18 million contract.

The move provides a big boost for the Stars’ blue line, which was a major point of concern in an otherwise outstanding campaign. Tanev has been a reliable defenseman throughout his career and is known as a great locker-room presence. He is expected to be tasked with a significant role, especially considering the questionable status of injured Nils Lundkvis and Jani Hakanpaa still not being fully fit after recovering from an injury of his own.

The Stars have shown this season that their run to the Conference Finals last year wasn’t an accident. They are currently sitting second in the Central Division with 79 points, the same as the leading Winnipeg Jets.

The Dallas Stars have locked their reliable forward Roope Hintz to a new contract. The Stars announced on social media that Hintz inked an eight-year extension that will now keep him with the franchise through the 2030-31 season.

The contract is worth $67.6 million and comes with an $8.45 million average annual salary for Hintz. However, according to reports, the 26-year-old will get half of the money in the first three years, including a big chuck of a $12 million signing bonus.

Hintz will now have the third-highest cap hit among the Stars players next season, which shows how much the Stars believe in him. He has been getting better each season since his debut in NHL in 2018, and Dallas seems convinced this will continue to be the case in the future.

Roope Hintz had his best campaign as a pro last season when he had career highs across the board and emerged as one of the Stars’ best players. He finished 2021-22 with 37 goals and 35 assists for a combined 72 points. He later added four points in six playoff appearances.

The 2022-23 season is also shaping up to be productive for Hintz, as he already has 24 points (8 goals and 16 assists) in the first 23 games. His performances have helped Dallas to a 13-6-4 record and a top spot in Central Division at the moment.

Veteran defenseman Andrej Sekera announced his retirement from professional ice hockey on Tuesday, thereby wrapping up a two-decade-long career in the NHL.

The 36-year-old player made his debut in 2006, signing a three-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres. From there, he went on to play for the Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, and Dallas Stars.

Sekera played the last two years of his professional career with the Stars after Edmonton made the decision to buy out the remainder of his contract. His standout moment for the Stars came during the playoff bubble in 2020 when he blocked 38 shots in 27 games to send Dallas through to the Stanley Cup Final. That season, he played an average of almost 14 minutes per game, helping the Stars reach their third playoffs spot in four years.

On the national level, Sekera skated at two Olympic Games and represented Slovakia at the world championships on eight occasions. He won the silver medal with Slovakia in 2012 and in 2019, was awarded the captain’s armband for his nation. Sekera played 888 games in the NHL.

It took a long for Peter DeBoer to find a new job after being fired by the Vegas Golden Knights at the end of the season. According to multiple reports, DeBoer is in discussion with the Dallas Stars and is expected to become the new head coach for the franchise in the coming days.

NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun reports that the Stars are willing to offer DeBoer a four-year deal that would earn him more than $4 million annually. LeBrun adds that nothing is signed as of now but that the major details of the agreement are all worked out.

The Stars have been looking for a new head coach since Rick Bowness stepped away from the position following first-round elimination in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Bowness spent three seasons in Dallas and coached the team to an 89-62-25 record that included Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 2019-20. He decided to leave the franchise after his contract expired.

Peter DeBoer would bring a wealth of experience to the Stars and potentially help the team maximize their championship window. Before missing the playoffs in 2021-22, he led the Golden Knights to Conference finals and Stanley Cup semifinals in consecutive seasons. DeBoer also has one Stanley Cup Finals appearance from 2015-16 with the San Jose Sharks.

Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill announced on Tuesday that his team has completed the signing of restricted free agent Denis Gurianov. The forward, who celebrated his 25th birthday on the same day as the announcement, has agreed to a $2.9 million contract with the Stars that will last for the 2022-23 season.

Hailing from Togliatti, Russia, Gurianov joined the Stars in 2015 when they selected him as their first-round pick and the 12th selection overall in the 2015 NHL Draft. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, Gurianov hit his peak in the 2021-22 season, scoring career highs of 31 points and 20 assists in 73 games.

The 25-year-old player’s 31 points saw him ranked sixth among the Stars’ forwards, while his 11 goals put him in seventh place on the scorers’ chart. Gurianov’s standout moment in a Dallas jersey last season came during Game 7 of his team’s first-round playoff series against the Calgary Flames when he scored four goals and bagged an assist.

Gurianov’s regular-season record throughout his career is 44 goals and 50 assists across 214 games. In 32 career postseason games, the Russian national has racked up nine goals and eight assists.

Dallas Stars’ goal for this offseason was keeping together the team that reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2019/20 and it’s safe to say that they are on track to accomplish it. After signing Anton Khudobin and Radek Faksa to new deals early in the free agency, Stars have now also managed to do the same with Finnish forward Roope Hintz.

The team announced earlier this week that Hintz inked a new contract that will keep him with the franchise through the 2022/23 NHL season. The 23-year-old player is set to earn $9.45 million over the course of his deal while receiving $3.15 million annually.

Roope Hintz enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Dallas last season, playing 60 games and contributing with career-high 33 points. He was second in goals among all Stars’ players with 19 while adding 14 assists as well.

During the playoffs, Hintz played in all of Stars’ 25 postseason games while scoring two goals and dishing 11 assists.

Re-signing Hintz will most likely be the last big offseason move for Dallas, considering their salary cap shortage.

The Dallas Stars announced on Tuesday that their All-Star center Tyler Seguin and goalie Ben Bishop will be out of action for five months recovering from recent surgeries.

According to the Stars’ statement, Seguin had right hip and labral repair procedures earlier this month. Bishop, on the other hand, had his surgery in October in order to repair a torn meniscus.

Both players are expected to miss a significant portion of the 2020/21 NHL season.

The loss of Tyler Seguin represents a tough blow for the Stars, considering that the 28-year-old center has been one of the team’s best players in recent years. While his scoring took a dip last season, presumably due to nagging injuries, he still contributed a great deal in the assists department. Seguin ended the shortened 2019/20 NHL season with 50 points while adding 13 more in the postseason and helping Dallas reach the Stanley Cup.

Ben Bishop also played an important part in Stars’ road to Stanley Cup Finals but couldn’t play once his team was there. Bishop was ruled out following Conference Finals against Vegas Golden Knights and wasn’t able to return to the ice.

Bishop, who has been with the Stars for the past three seasons, had a 21-16-4 record in 2019/20 with a 2.50 goal against average and .920 save percentage.

In Seguin’s absence, the Stars are expected to give more opportunities to youngsters like Denis Gurianov and Roope Hintz. Bishop will be most likely replaced by veteran Anton Khudobin.

After a five-year hiatus, the Tampa Bay Lightning are headed to the Stanley Cup Final again.

Tampa Bay defeated the New York Islanders 2-1 in overtime on Thursday, winning the best-of-seven series 4-2.

The Lightning’s game-winner was netted by Anthony Cirelli 13 minutes into overtime.

Cirelli took advantage of a tired Islanders team, creeping behind them and putting himself in position to score. The pass came from Barclay Goodrow to Cirelli, who put the puck in the back of the net before anyone on the Islanders team, including goalie Semyon Varlomov, could adjust.

But the star of the game for the Lightning was goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, who put up 26 saves in the game, holding the Islanders to a single goal.

Next up in the playoff bubble in Edmonton are the Dallas Stars, who are back in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 20 years. The Stars easily handled the Las Vegas Golden Knights, winning the series in just five games.

The last time the Lightning made it to the Stanley Cup Final they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015. Tampa Bay has one Stanley Cup title. They defeated the Calgary Flames in the 2004 final.

Dallas Stars forward Denis Gurlanov scored three minutes into overtime to lift the Stars to a 3-2 win over the Las Vegas Golden Knights, sending them to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Stars eliminated the Golden Knights in five games and will represent the Western Conference in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 20 years.

It has truly been a strange season for Dallas, that came with many ups and downs, making the trip to the finals even sweeter for the team and fans that have been long for the ride.

The Stars started off the season winning only one of their first nine games and ended the season with a six-game losing streak. However, they played like the best team in the league between those two strange periods of losing.

Dallas then fired their coach in December and have been led to the finals by interim coach Rick Bowness.

Gurianov’s goal in overtime came after a frantic third period in which the Stars were down 0-2. Jamie Benn and Joel Kiviranta netted two goals in the final period, taking the Stars into overtime where Gurianov would seal the deal and punch the team’s ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Stars will face the winner of the Tampa Bay Lightning-New York Islanders series, which Tampa Bay leads 3-1.

Dallas Stars will most likely be one man short once the 2019/20 NHL season resumes. Stars’ defenseman Roman Polak recently told the media in his native Czech Republic that he doesn’t want to return to the NHL and finish the season.

Polak left the United States when the NHL decided to suspend its activities due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 34-year-old defenseman agreed to a deal with the Czech side HC Vitkovice in the meantime and now doesn’t want to return.

“I am determined to stay at home. If I really had to finish [the season], I’d go. However, I will do everything I can to avoid it,” Polak told iSport according to ESPN.

It appears that Polak might get his wish, as Stars general manager Jim Nill hinted that he wouldn’t force the player to play if he doesn’t want.

“We can’t make someone come back under their wishes,” Nill told Dallas News when asked about Polak’s comments. “If anyone wants to stay home, that is their decision. His contract expires at the end of this season, so no issues there.”

Polak played 41 games with Stars so far in the season and contributed with four assists while spending 16:40 on ice on average. He is in the final year of his contract.
