Sofia Kenin Defeats World #1 Ashleigh Barty at the Rogers Cup

Currently hosting the Rogers Cup, Toronto will be the center of the tennis world this week, with very popular names fighting for the title. So far, the competition has provided some interesting and unexpected outcomes, promising to become even more exciting in the next few days as we get nearer to the final.

The Australian Ashleigh Barty, who is currently number one in the world, suffered an unexpected defeat in the match against 20-year-old Sofia Kenin early in the cup. The spectacular match lasted for one hour and 56 minutes and ended with a result of 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 and 6-4, bringing victory to the young American.

The 23-year-old Australian showed great skill and determination but, in the end, Kenin who is currently World number 29 dominated the tennis field and showed everyone that a great future is in store for her. In the next round, she will be facing Victoria Azarenka or Dayana Yastremska.

Barty said that she wasn’t able to adapt quickly enough or well enough to play a match of the standard she expected.

With this being another defeat after she was beaten out of Wimbledon in the fourth round by Alison Riske a month ago, Barty’s ranking as the World’s number one is now seriously shaken.
