The New Orleans Saints finally decided to address their cornerback needs and have acquired Eli Apple from New York Giants on Tuesday. According to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, the Saints have sent their fourth-round draft pick in 2019 and a seventh rounder in 2020 to New York in order to get Apple.

The cornerback position was one of the Saint’s most pressing issues considering the fact that they allowed 293.7 passing yards per game, ranking 28th in the NFL. The team considered several options in the last weeks including Arizona Cardinals’ Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson. Since the asking price for Peterson would be more than New Orleans is willing to pay, they decided to go with riskier but more affordable solution.

Eli Apple entered the 2016 NFL Draft as one of the most talented young cornerbacks in the nation and ended up being drafted 10th overall by the New York Giants. Apple’s first two seasons in New York, however, were marked with inconsistency, injuries and off-field issues which ultimately made the Giants give up on him after just two and a half years.

Apple played a total of 30 games during his NFL career, during which he managed 123 total tackles, 15 pass deflections, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and one interception.
