Former WTA world number one Serena Williams has announced that she will not be participating in the US Open. Her decision to withdraw from the last Grand Slam of the tennis calendar comes after Williams suffered a torn hamstring.
In addition to Williams’ announcement on social media, her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, also broadcast his thoughts on the matter, explaining, “We’ve done everything we could. It is heartbreaking, but this is the only possible decision.”
To date, Williams has won six womens’ singles championships at the US Open, with her most recent victory coming in 2014. In total, Williams has won 23 Grand Slam titles in her career; just one short of the all-time record currently held by Margaret Court.
Williams, who turns 40 next month, is the latest of an array of stars who will not be featuring at Flushing Meadows this year. The list includes Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Dominic Thiem.
Up until this point in the season, Williams made it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, the fourth round of the French Open, and was unable to progress from her opening game of Wimbledon due to injury—her second-ever mid-match withdrawal in her career.
