Roger Federer won’t play competitive tennis until 2021. Federer made an announcement on social media on Wednesday saying that he recently suffered a rehabilitation setback and will be out for the remainder of 2020.

Federer underwent a procedure on his right knee in February and was initially set to miss up to four months. This timeline had the 38-year-old champion not playing the French Open, but he hoped he’ll be able to return in time for Wimbledon.

However, Federer didn’t miss much as the coronavirus pandemic caused all major tournaments to be either canceled, suspended, or postponed. With this changing landscape and the fact that his rehabilitation isn’t going as planned, the decision to turn his focus to next season instead of taking unnecessary risks is probably the best.

”A few weeks ago, having experienced a setback during my initial rehabilitation, I had to have an additional quick arthroscopic procedure on my right knee,” Federer explained his decision.

”I will look forward to seeing everyone back on tour at the start of the 2021 season,” he added.

It still remains unknown wheater the tennis tournaments could return this year. Among the three remaining Grand Slams for 2020, Wimbledon was the first one to make a decision, opting to skip the 2020 tournament altogether. French Open and US Open are still mulling their options while keeping optimism that the tournaments could still take place later this year.
