Fresh off of his US Open title win, world number two Rafael Nadal came close to calling it quits on the current tennis season. This issue arose in May due to Nadal suffering from persistent injury issues.

The Spanish left-hander endured a knee injury at last year’s US Open, which brought the curtain down on his 2018 tennis season prematurely.

Fortunately, Nadal managed to overcome his injury concerns to enjoy one of his finest tennis seasons to date. The Spaniard managed to pick up two ATP Masters 1000 Titles- namely Canada and Rome- as well as two Grand Slam trophies, namely Roland Garros and the US Open. This was Nadal’s 12th Roland Garros trophy, while his trophy tally at Flushing Meadows has been extended to four.

Following his US Open triumph this year, Nadal had the following to say: “It has been unforgettable, emotional two weeks… Dramatic end. Who would have thought it after Monte Carlo and especially the Barcelona first round. Tough times.

“I seriously thought about stopping for a season because when you have injuries every week you do not enjoy yourself. I tried to make a change, to go through the suffering, training and appreciating the little things that I needed to do to fight for the things I wanted to.

“I had a great team behind and without their confidence, it would have been impossible.”
