Candace Parker, considered one of the best players in WNBA history, is retiring from professional basketball. Parker announced the news on Sunday via a post on Instagram.

Parker previously expressed doubts about her future in the WNBA after missing the second part of the 2023 season with a foot injury. She signed a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Aces for 2024 with hopes of playing her 17th season in the league but now decided it was time to walk away.

“I promised I’d never cheat the game & that I’d leave it in a better place than I came into it. The competitor in me always wants 1 more, but it’s time. My HEART & body knew, but I needed to give my mind time to accept it,” she wrote on Instagram.

Candace Parker entered the league as the first overall pick by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2008. She won the WNBA MVP honors and the Rookie of the Year award in her first season, becoming the only player in league history to achieve this feat.

Parker would go on to play 12 more seasons with the Sparks, during which she received another MVP nod in 2013 while helping the franchise to a WNBA title in 2016. She also had five All-Star appearances and won one WNBA Defensive Player of the Year award.

In 2021, Parker left Los Angeles and joined the Chicago Sky on a two-year deal. She won another WNBA championship with the franchise and made back-to-back All-Star appearances. After two seasons with the Sky, Parker joined the Aces for the 2023 campaign and ended up winning her third career championship.

Breanna Stewart, the reigning WNBA MVP, will run it back with the New York Liberty. The franchise just announced that Stewart is returning for the 2024 WNBA season after inking a new one-year deal.

Stewart was expected to stay in New York considering that general manager Jonathan Kolb said the team intends to place a core designation on her shortly after Liberty’s WNBA Finals loss to the Los Angeles Aces. However, it appears that the two sides agreed to a different type of deal in the meantime.

Stewart reportedly signed a contract that is below the WNBA’s max. This way, the Liberty gets financial flexibility to further improve their roster and make another run at the WNBA title.

With Stewart back, the Liberty’s starting five from the 2023 season, which includes Courtney Vandersloot, Jonquel Jones, Sabrina Ionescu, and Betnijah Laney, remains intact. The New York team finished the regular season with the league’s second-best 32-8 record and reached the WNBA Finals, where they lost 3-1 in the series against the Aces.

Breanna Stewart averaged a career-high 23.0 points per game last season while adding 9.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.6 blocks. She earned her second WNBA MVP award at the end of the season.

Two-time WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne is taking a break from basketball. According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Delle Donne won’t sign the one-year core designation contract with the Washington Mystics and will sit out the 2024 WNBA season.

Reportedly, Delle Donne, who was set to become a free agent after the 2023 campaign, informed the Mystics that she is unsure about her plans for the future. The 34-year-old player dealt with a number of injuries in recent years and wanted to take time to consider her options.

The franchise opted to place a core designation on Delle Donne, meaning that the only team she could play for in the 2024 season is the Mystics. In case Delle Donne sits out the 2024 campaign entirely, the Washington team will be able to do the same for the 2025 season in case she decides to return.

According to Shelburne, it is unclear how long Delle Donne intends to stay away from basketball or whether she intends to play again.

Elena Delle Donne was drafted second overall in the 2013 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. She spent four years with the Sky, winning 2015 WNBA MVP honors and receiving three All-Star nods, before being traded to the Mystics ahead of the 2017 season.

While in Washington, Delle Donne won another WNBA MVP award and added four All-Star selections to her resume. She was also part of the Mystics team that won the franchise’s first WNBA championship in 2019.

The New York Liberty superteam that made the 2023 WNBA Finals is staying intact. According to reports, All-Star center Jonquel Jones agreed to a new contract that will see her stay with Liberty through the 2025 season.

Jones reportedly received a “protected” contract, meaning that her salary for the next two seasons is guaranteed.

Jones, who won WNBA MVP honors in 2021, joined the Liberty in a trade with the Connecticut Sun last year. The move gave the New York team a star player in every position, with Jones teaming up with fellow WNBA MVP winner Breanna Stewart and All-Stars Courtney Vandersloot, Betnijah Laney, and Sabrina Ionescu.

The star-studded New York Liberty won the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup while finishing at the top of the Eastern Conference. The Liberty ended up rolling over the Washington Mystics and the Connecticut Sun en route to the WNBA Finals but fell short of winning the franchise’s first WNBA title with a 1-3 series loss to the Las Vegas Aces.

With Jones now on board, the Liberty now gets a chance to make at least one more run for the championship with their core intact. Stewart and Vandersloot are under contract for the 2024 season, while Laney and Ionescu’s deals run through 2025.

Jonquel Jones finished the 2023 regular season averaging 11.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game while being honored with WNBA Commissioner’s Cup MVP award.

The Las Vegas Aces are your new/old WNBA champions. The Aces secured the 2023 WNBA title on Wednesday night with a 70-69 win over the New York Liberty in Game 4 of the Finals.

The Aces showed resilience by not allowing the Finals series to go to Game 5 and taking care of the business despite trailing by nine points at halftime. Powered by an outstanding performance from A’ja Wilson, the Las Vegas team outscored the Liberty by 11 points in the third quarter and then just did enough to cling to the lead.

Wilson finished the game with 24 points and 16 rebounds and won the Finals MVP honors. Jackie Young also made a big impact with 16 points and seven assists, while Kelsey Plum helped with seven points, eight rebounds, and five assists.

The Aces now became the first WNBA team to win back-to-back titles since the Los Angeles Sparks did it in 2001 and 2002. They are also the only third team in league history who managed to achieve this feat.

“This is what it’s all about, to have your name etched in history right now with other teams,” Wilson said after the game. “We never gave up, and this is a moment that we need to celebrate. This is a moment that not a lot of people get a chance to do it, and for us to do it shorthanded, it is truly amazing. It just makes winning that much better.”

For Liberty, it was another crushing WNBA Finals loss. Despite making the WNBA Finals five times, the New York team is yet to win a title. To make it worse, they only managed to win two games in those five trips.

The New York Liberty’s star forward Breanna Stewart was unveiled as the recipient of the WNBA Most Valuable Player award for the 2023 season. This is the second MVP award for Stewart after she won one in 2018.

Stewart put up impressive numbers in 2023, averaging 23.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game in her first season with Liberty. She also helped the franchise to a 32-8 record as the first seed in the Eastern Conference.

Stewart had 20 first-place votes and received a total of 446 points from a voting committee that consisted of 60 sportswriters and broadcasters from across the nation. Connecticut Sun’s Alyssa Thomas had 23 first-place votes but finished second in the voting with 439 points. Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson came in third with 17 first-place votes and 433 points.

“That’s something that is really special to me when I think about it,” Stewart said via ESPN. “My first one was in 2018. I was still under my rookie contract, and now look to 2023, I’m married to a beautiful wife, have a baby [Ruby, born in 2021] and we’re having another one.”

Stewart will now focus on helping the Liberty make a deep run in the WNBA playoffs. The NY team swept the Washington Mystics in the first round but now finds itself 0-1 in the second-round matchup against Connecticut.

Big scoring performances have become a new normal for New York Liberty’s All-Star Breanna Stewart this season. Stewart scored 40 points and added 10 rebounds on Tuesday to help the Liberty get a 94-93 win over the Dallas Wings.

This was not only Stewart’s fourth 40-point game in 2023 but also helped her to take ownership of WNBA’s single-season points record. The 29-year-old scored 885 points for the season after the Wings game, surpassing the previous all-time high of 860 set by Diana Taurasi in 2006.

Stewart will have a chance to further bump up the record, considering Liberty has two more games left to play this season. It is important to note that Taurasi reached her mark in the 34-game season while Stewart needed 38 games.

“It means a lot,” Stewart said after the game. “Any time I’m in the same limelight as ‘D,’ it’s a huge honor.”

Stewart, who is a favorite to win WNBA MVP honors in 2023, is averaging a career-high 22.8 points and 3.9 assists this season while adding 9.4 rebounds.

Liberty is currently on a seven-game winning streak and sits second in the WNBA with a 31-7 record. The NY team is one game behind the first-placed Las Vegas Aces.

The New York Liberty won the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday night after clinching an 82-63 victory over the Las Vegas Aces. This is the first trophy that Liberty has won since being one of the original WNBA franchises to begin playing in 1997.

“This is why we all came here,” forward Breanna Stewart remarked following the victory. “We came to win games, to contend for WNBA championships. One of our goals was to win the Commissioner’s Cup, and we did that.” Signing for New York as a free agent in February, Stewart previously won two WNBA titles in six seasons with the Seattle Storm. She was selected first overall by the Storm in the 2016 WNBA Draft.

By winning this title, each Liberty player will be awarded $30,000 in prize money. They defeated the Aces twice this season before the Commissioner’s Cup title game, including handing the Aces their first home loss of 2023.

While this game doesn’t count toward the regular WNBA season standings, Liberty remains in contention for the WNBA title, sitting in second place at 24-6. The Aces remain on top of the standings, leading New York by a single game.

Expect to see legendary quarterback Tom Brady quite often on WNBA games in the future. In one of his first major moves after retiring from NFL, Brady became a minority owner of the reigning WNBA champions Las Vegas Aces.

Brady confirmed his involvement with the Aces on Friday, calling it an “incredible honor” in a video shared on his social media.

“Since I purchased the Aces, our goal has been to win on and off the court. Tom Brady is a win not only for the Aces, and the WNBA, but for women’s professional sports as a whole,” Aces’ majority owner Mark Davis, who also owns the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, said in a statement after the news became official.

Many sports fans expected Tom Brady to come to Las Vegas in 2023, but not in this capacity. The Raiders were previously considered the favorites to sign Brady when he hit free agency after the 2022 NFL season but didn’t even get a chance to make their pitch. The seven-time Super Bowl winner opted to end his storied career and turn his attention to a broadcasting career with FOX Sports.

The Aces are one of the WNBA’s inaugural teams, being founded in 1997 as the Utah Starzz. The franchise played in San Antonio as Silver Stars between 2002 and 2017 before relocating to Las Vegas and adopting the name Aces. In the 2022 WNBA season, the team won its first title after defeating Connecticut Sun in four games in WNBA Finals.

The WNBA free agency started with a bang. Forward Breanna Stewart, who was the league MVP in 2018, decided to leave Seattle Storm and will sign with the New York Liberty.

Stewart was the most prominent free agent in WNBA this offseason and was aggressively recruited by several franchises, including Minnesota Lynx and Washington Mystics. However, the Liberty presented the best case and managed to add another superstar to its already star-studded roster that includes All-Star guard Sabrina Ionescu and 2021’s MVP Jonquel Jones.

Speaking with ESPN’s Malika Andrews about her decision, Stewart said that she decided to go to New York because she wants to “continue to be great” and “continue to help this league become better”.

“I feel like, why not go to the biggest market in all of the sports, and I’m really excited to go after their first championship,” Stewart added.

Breanna Stewart was selected by the Storm as the first overall pick in the 2016 WNBA draft out of UConn. During her six years in Seattle, she helped the franchise win two WNBA championships, earning the WNBA Finals MVP on both occasions. Stewart also received four All-WNBA First Team nods and was selected to the WNBA All-Star games four times. Her career averages include 20.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.

Stewart also built an accomplished career overseas. She played in China, Russia, and Turkey, and has EuroLeague regular season MVP award and EuroLeague championship on her resume.
