The New York Liberty superteam that made the 2023 WNBA Finals is staying intact. According to reports, All-Star center Jonquel Jones agreed to a new contract that will see her stay with Liberty through the 2025 season.

Jones reportedly received a “protected” contract, meaning that her salary for the next two seasons is guaranteed.

Jones, who won WNBA MVP honors in 2021, joined the Liberty in a trade with the Connecticut Sun last year. The move gave the New York team a star player in every position, with Jones teaming up with fellow WNBA MVP winner Breanna Stewart and All-Stars Courtney Vandersloot, Betnijah Laney, and Sabrina Ionescu.

The star-studded New York Liberty won the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup while finishing at the top of the Eastern Conference. The Liberty ended up rolling over the Washington Mystics and the Connecticut Sun en route to the WNBA Finals but fell short of winning the franchise’s first WNBA title with a 1-3 series loss to the Las Vegas Aces.

With Jones now on board, the Liberty now gets a chance to make at least one more run for the championship with their core intact. Stewart and Vandersloot are under contract for the 2024 season, while Laney and Ionescu’s deals run through 2025.

Jonquel Jones finished the 2023 regular season averaging 11.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game while being honored with WNBA Commissioner’s Cup MVP award.
