Big scoring performances have become a new normal for New York Liberty’s All-Star Breanna Stewart this season. Stewart scored 40 points and added 10 rebounds on Tuesday to help the Liberty get a 94-93 win over the Dallas Wings.

This was not only Stewart’s fourth 40-point game in 2023 but also helped her to take ownership of WNBA’s single-season points record. The 29-year-old scored 885 points for the season after the Wings game, surpassing the previous all-time high of 860 set by Diana Taurasi in 2006.

Stewart will have a chance to further bump up the record, considering Liberty has two more games left to play this season. It is important to note that Taurasi reached her mark in the 34-game season while Stewart needed 38 games.

“It means a lot,” Stewart said after the game. “Any time I’m in the same limelight as ‘D,’ it’s a huge honor.”

Stewart, who is a favorite to win WNBA MVP honors in 2023, is averaging a career-high 22.8 points and 3.9 assists this season while adding 9.4 rebounds.

Liberty is currently on a seven-game winning streak and sits second in the WNBA with a 31-7 record. The NY team is one game behind the first-placed Las Vegas Aces.
