Toronto FC announced the signing of former Newcastle midfielder Matty Longstaff. The two sides agreed to a two-year deal with an option for 2026.

Longstaff became a free agent after being released by Newcastle this past summer. He hasn’t played competitively since late 2022, suffering an ACL injury while on loan with EFL League Two side Colchester United.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Matty to our squad,” said Toronto’s head coach John Herdman in a statement. “His Premier League experience and dynamic playing style will add depth to our midfield and complement our tactical blueprint.”

Adding Longstaff brings creativity to Toronto’s team, which struggled at the start of the 2024 MLS season. The 2017 MLS Cup champions are winless in the first three games of the campaign and have only scored one goal.

Matty Longstaff came through Newcastle United’s youth ranks and made his senior team debut during the 2019–20 season. He played a total of 20 games since then, scoring three goals.

Longstaff went on several loan stints during his time with Newcastle, suiting up for Scottish side Aberdeen and Mansfield Town apart from his spell with Colchester. His best season came in 2021–22 when he had six goals, and two assists in 18 games with Mansfield.

Longstaff also played with England’s U20, making two international appearances.

Toronto FC’s veteran midfielder Michael Bradley is retiring from professional soccer. The former captain of the United States men’s national team announced his decision on Tuesday.

Bradley will play his last game this upcoming weekend when Toronto faces Orlando City in the 2023 MLS regular-season closer. The Canadian team won’t play in the postseason, currently sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Bradley signed with Toronto FC in 2014 following stints with several European clubs, including Heerenveen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and AS Roma. In 10 years with the club, he helped them to three MLS Cup Finals appearances and the MLS Cup title in 2017. He also received three MLS All-Star nods during that period.

“For the last 10 years I have spilled my blood, sweat and tears trying to help this club be the best it could be. There were some incredible days — moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life — and some bad ones too. But I never stopped giving everything I had,” said Bradley in a statement released by Toronto FC.

Michael Bradley was also a key member of the USMNT for a long time. He made his senior team debut in 2006 and went on to make 151 appearances, which ranks him third-most on the all-time list behind Cobi Jones and Landon Donovan. Bradley scored 17 international goals for USMNT and was part of two CONCACAF Gold Cup-winning teams.

MLS side Toronto FC wrapped another big piece of business this week by adding Italy international winger Federico Bernardeschi to their squad. Bernardeschi joined as a free agent after his contract with Seria A giants Juventus expired this month.

Bernardeschi inked a deal through 2026 and will occupy a designated player spot. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but reports say that the 28-year-old player should earn around $5 million annually.

Bernardeschi is the third Italian to come to Toronto this season. The club previously also added ex-Napoli star forward Lorenzo Insigne, who arrived on a record-breaking $15 million per year deal, and defender Domenico Criscito. All three players have played for Italy national team together at one point.

“We are thrilled to add Federico to our team,” said Toronto FC President Bill Manning in a statement. “As a player and a person, we believe he’s exactly what we need right now, both on the field and in the locker room.”

Federico Bernardeschi started his professional career with Seria A side Fiorentina, where he quickly emerged as one of the future stars of Italian football. After scoring 14 goals in the 2016–17 season, Bernardeschi was chased by several big European clubs but decided to stay in Italy and join Juventus in a €40 million transfer.

While Bernardeschi was solid during his spell in Turin, he never managed to reach the heights that were expected from him. He left Juve, having scored just 12 goals in 183 games played across five seasons.

If the recent reports are true, Inter Miami could soon make a significant addition to their roster.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Inter is close to adding former MLS MVP Alejandro Pozuelo, who is set to join in a trade with Toronto FC.

Reportedly, Inter will only have to part with $150,000 in allocation money to get Pozuelo in the building. The low price is probably the result of the fact that the 30-year-old is in the final year of his contract.

Pozuelo has a salary of $4.69 million in 2022, making him the fourth-highest paid player in the league. The trade clears a substantial amount of salary of Toronto FC’s books while also clearing out a Designated Player spot that could prove useful later on.

On the other hand, Inter gets one of the best players in MLS in recent years for a bargain price. Pozuelo’s addition will certainly help them get involved in the playoff picture in Eastern Conference and improve on the current no. 9 spot. Also, they will be in the leading position for Pozuelo when he becomes a free agent.

Pozuelo joined Toronto in 2019 after a spell with Belgium’s Genk. He went on to play 99 games in all competitions for the 2017’s MLS Cup champions, scoring 29 goals and adding 26 assists. The Spaniard was honored with the Landon Donovan MVP Award in 2020 and has two MLS Best XI nods.

Toronto FC still haven’t ruled out the possibility of bringing back Italian forward Sebastian Giovinco. According to a recent report by Toronto Sun, the two sides will meet again at some point this week and test the waters on a possible reunion.

Currently, the only issue that is stopping Giovinco from donning Toronto’s jersey once again is money. It is believed that the 34-year-old will have to be open to a significant pay cut if there is a chance for the move to materialize.

Sebastian Giovinco previously played for Toronto between 2015 and 2018, establishing himself as one of the best players in MLS history. He scored 83 goals in 142 games for the club while helping them win MLS Cup in 2017. Among his individual accolades are four MLS All-Star appearances, three MLS Best XI nods, and MLS MVP Award from 2015.

Giovinco parted ways with Toronto at the end of the 2018 season and joined Al-Hilal for an undisclosed transfer fee. In three seasons with the Saudi Arabia side, he played 83 games and contributed with 16 goals. He left the club after his contract expired in the summer and has been a free agent since.

Toronto already approached Giovinco several months ago, but the talks went nowhere as the MLS side wasn’t ready to meet the player’s contract demands.

The star-studded Inter Miami roster is finally showing signs of life. After losing six straight games, Miami bounced back against Toronto FC and delivered one of their best performances in a while to claim a 3-0 win.

Veteran midfielder Federico Higuain opened the scoring in the 10th minute after picking up a bad clearance pass from Toronto’s goalkeeper Alex Bono. Christian Makoun added to Miami’s lead just before halftime, using the confusion in the penalty box after Gonzalo Higuain’s corner kick to put the ball behind Bono once again.

The second half saw Toronto ramping up their attacking efforts in an attempt to get a goal. They managed to do so, but unfortunately for them, it was an own goal from defender Eriq Zavaleta in the 61st minute.

With three goals in the bag, Miami opted to slow things down, which caused the last 30 minutes to be rather uneventful.

The win will certainly provide a big lift for Inter as it became obvious that the losing streak was starting to cause a confidence crisis in the squad. The team will especially be happy for the high-scoring performance, considering they only scored once while conceding 16 goals in the previous six games.

Inter is now 11th in the Eastern Conference with 35 points. Their chances of making playoffs remain alive although it is fair to say it would be a small miracle if they get there.

Toronto, on the other hand, is second from the bottom with just 25 points from 30 matches.

Toronto FC will have to say goodbye to a key part of their back four following the end of the 2021 MLS season. The club announced on Thursday that their legendary full-back Justin Morrow decided to retire and will walk away from professional soccer following the 2021 MLS season.

Morrow himself confirmed the news a day later, attending a press conference organized by Toronto.

“I came to this decision knowing my light is starting to shine brighter off the field than on it right now, and that comes with a lot of joy,” Morrow told reporters during a virtual press conference.

The 33-year-old legend also touched on his future, saying that he hopes he’ll remain involved with the club in some way even after hanging his cleats.

“This club means so much for me. We’ve had positive conversations, so hopefully it works out and I get to stay,” he added.

Justin Morrow has several games left to play for Toronto before calling it quits. He will hope to help the club make a better impression for the remainder of 2021, considering they are currently bottom last in Eastern Conference with the worst record in the MLS.

Previously, Morrow contributed to Toronto’s MLS Cup and Supporters Shield runs in 2017 and was part of the teams that finished as MLS Cup runner-ups in 2016 and 2019. He made a total of 246 appearances for the Canadian club, scoring 18 goals and earning one MLS Best XI honors in the process.

Toronto FC is ready to spend big this offseason if that means getting more firepower in the front.

According to UOL Esporte’s Bruno Andrade, Toronto is currently pursuing River Plate striker Rafael Santos Borre. The MLS team offered $15 million for the Colombian and is currently waiting for River’s response.

Andrade adds that Toronto faces competition for Borre, with reigning Copa Libertadores champs Palmeiras registering interest recently. They are willing to pay $14 million for the 25-year-old player.

Despite Toronto being ready to pay a handsome fee for Borre, the player reportedly isn’t excited about the opportunity to play in the MLS. He is currently exploring his options in Europe, and returning there remains his main option. If that doesn’t work out, he would be open to re-signing with River.

Rafael Santos Borre started his career with Deportivo Cali, where he scored 14 goals in two seasons with the club. This captured the attention of several high-profile European clubs, with Atletico Madrid being the quickest to sign him.

Despite inking a six-year contract with Atletico, Borre failed to play a single game for Atletico. He spent his first two seasons on loan with Cali and Villareal before being sold to River in 2017.

With River, Borre rediscovered his goalscoring touch again. He scored 46 goals and 16 assists since arriving while helping the club win five trophies, including Copa Libertadores in 2018.

Toronto FC secured themselves a major depth piece on the defense as they look to challenge Columbus Crew for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The team announced on Monday that they have secured a deal for Scottish left-back Tony Gallacher, who will join on loan from Premier League champions Liverpool.

According to the official press release from the club, Gallacher will remain in Toronto for the remainder of the 2020 MLS season and will occupy the international roster spot.

Gallacher joined Liverpool back in 2018 from Falkirk FC and has been playing for the club’s U-23 side almost exclusively. He made one first-team appearance, playing in last season’s Carabao Cup quarterfinal.

“Tony is a young, promising defender that will provide us with additional depth on our backline for the remainder of the year,” said Toronto’s general manager Ali Curtis in a statement. “We feel his character and personality will fit well within our group.”

Tony Gallacher will challenge veteran Justin Morrow for the left-back spot in the starting lineup. Morrow has covered the position since 2014 and has 2020 appearances for Toronto in all competitions.

Toronto FC recently signed U.S. international midfielder Marky Delgado and Canada international defender Richie Laryea to contract extensions. According to the team’s announcement, Delgado and Laryea both inked multi-year contracts.

Delgado, who was entering the final year of his deal, played 20 games with Toronto in 2019, scoring two goals and dishing seven assists. The 25-year-old midfielder has been with the Canadian powerhouse since 2015 and has won an MLS Cup trophy with the organization during that period.

“Mark has been such a big part of TFC’s success,” said Toronto’s general manager Ali Curtis. “We are all very happy that he will be remaining with the club as he is an important part of our group.“

Laryea joined Toronto on trial last preseason and managed to earn a contract by displaying some impressive effort. He ended up emerging as an impactful player for the team thanks to his versatility as he was used in the midfield and the defense by head coach Greg Vanney.

Laryea made 20 appearances in 2019 and contributed with one goal and two assists.

“Off the field, Richie’s character and personality are tremendous. He earned this new contract in many ways, and we are excited for him, his family and what he will bring to TFC moving forward,” added Curtis.
