The Dallas Cowboys have acquired Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts as part of a trade that sees the team’s fifth-round draft pick go to Indianapolis. This draft pick was acquired by the Cowboys in a trade last week.

Gilmore, who is entering the final year of his contract with a base salary of $7.9 million, started 16 games for the Cowboys last season, making two interceptions including one again the Cowboys. The cornerback is believed to have entered a two-year deal with the Cowboys worth $11 million.

A Pro-Bowler with the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and New England Patriots, Gilmore was named 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, making a league-leading six interceptions and 20 pass deflections for the Patriots. Upon arriving in Dallas, he is expected to be paired alongside Trevon Diggs, who made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons. This would result in one of the highest-profile cornerback pairings that the Cowboys have had in recent years.

Pro Bowl corner Stephon Gilmore is off the free-agent market. The 2019’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year told ESPN’s Josina Anderson that he reached a deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

Reportedly, Gilmore inked a two-year contract with the Colts. The agreement is worth $23 million and comes with $14 million guaranteed.

Gilmore started the last season with the New England Patriots but he didn’t play a single game in 2021 after his relationship with the franchise started deteriorating. He ended up being traded to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a third-round pick.

In Carolina, Gilmore played a total of eight games and totaled 15 tackles, two interceptions, and two pass deflections. The 31-year-old player previously said that he would like to stay with the Panthers, but the extension talks between the two sides never really took off.

The Colts were happy to take advantage of the lack of interest in Gilmore, believing he still has a lot left in his tank. The veteran should fit well with Indianapolis’ defense, which already has an abundance of star players, including All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard and fellow Pro Bowl corner Kenny Moore.

Stephon Gilmore started his NFL career as Buffalo Bill’s first-round pick in 2012. After five years in Buffalo, which included one Pro Bowl nod, Gilmore left in free agency to sign with the Patriots. In New England, he became one of the best corners in the league. He helped the franchise win a Super Bowl in 2018 while earning two First-team All-Pro honors and two additional Pro Bowls.

Gilmore’s career stats include 427 tackles, 116 pass deflections, 27 interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns.

The New England Patriots’ decision to trade star corner Stephon Gilmore to the Carolina Panthers back in early October surprised most of the league but not the player himself. Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Gilmore revealed that his relationship with the Pats deteriorated recently and that the two sides mutually agreed to part ways even before he was dealt.

According to Gilmore, the major reason behind his departure from New England was how the franchise handled his torn quad injury. The 31-year-old got hurt in Week 15 of the 2020 NFL season and had to undergo surgery to repair the damage.

“I just didn’t like how they handled my situation, my injury. A lot went on with that I didn’t agree with,” Gilmore said. “I learned a lot there. I have a lot of friends there. A lot of great coaches. I just didn’t like how they handled my situation with my injury.”

Gilmore added that the Pats’ hesitance to give him an improved deal also played a part in his exit.

“At the end of the day, it’s a business. They treat it like a business, and we made the best decision for each other,” he added.

Gilmore spent three and a half years in New England and has established himself as one of the best corners in the game during that time. He won NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 while also helping the Pats win Super Bowl LIII.

Gilmore already made his debut with the Panthers, playing 17 defensive snaps in a 19-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Despite limited time on the field, he managed to get a tackle, an interception, and one pass defended.

Despite being frequently mentioned in trade rumors, New England Patriots’ star corner Stephon Gilmore wasn’t moved before the NFL trade deadline. As it appears, the reason for this was the Pats’ asking price for the 2019’s Defensive Player of the Year.

According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, multiple teams have called New England in recent days to inquire about Gilmore and were told that a first-round pick and a player would be required for them to let go of the three-time Pro Bowler.

Patriots’ asking price might seem steep, but Gilmore is just one year removed from being the best player on the defensive end of the ball in the NFL. He has the capability to make game-changing plays and shut down the opponents’ best offensive weapon, making him an ideal addition for a Super Bowl contender.

Although no one was willing to meet the Pats’ demands before the trade deadline, it shouldn’t be a surprise if Gilmore is on the move during the 2021 offseason. He is New England’s best opportunity to acquire some assets and retool, so the organization will most likely look to cash in before his contract expires.

Stephon Gilmore landed with the Patriots in 2017 as a free agent pick up. Since then he helped the organization win a Super Bowl while also being selected to two Pro Bowls and receiving two First-team All-Pro nods.

Compared to some previous years, Gilmore hasn’t been efficient in 2020 as he was fighting injuries. In six games he managed to play this season, he has 20 tackles, two passes defended, and one interception.

The New England Patriots now have three team members that have tested positive for COVID-19.

The latest is Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who received a positive test on Wednesday morning. The Patriots did not practice and might not even be able to play their next game on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

The first Patriot to test positive was quarterback Cam Newton, who has been in quarantine since last week and did not play on Monday night against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The game was initially moved from Sunday to Monday because of Newton’s positive test. The Patriots, led by veteran backup Brian Hoyer, lost the game 26-10.

The third player with a positive test is practice squad defensive tackle Bill Murray. All three are now on the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 list.

Since Murray is on the practice squad, he did not make the trip with the Patriots to Kansas City. However, Gilmore did, which means that an outbreak within the Patriots organization could follow.

As of Wednesday, the Chiefs did not have any players that tested positive for the coronavirus. The Chiefs are scheduled to travel to Las Vegas this weekend to face the Raiders.

NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award has been dominated in recent years by pass rushers and players who have the ability to disrupt the quarterback. This year, however, it could be secondary’s turn to have their winner.

New England Patriots’ cornerback Stephon Gilmore is considered to be the favorite for DPOY in 2019 thanks to his phenomenal season. Gilmore is shutting down opponents’ receivers at an impressive rate and is arguably the best player at his position at the moment. The 29-year-old himself also thinks he has an award-worthy campaign.

When asked about his chances to win the DPOY award, Gilmore said that there is “no question” that the honor will be his.

“I mean, my play speaks for itself,” said Gilmore during his appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Zolak and Bertrand Show. “If you really watch the tape each and every game, it’s no question.”

Stephon Gilmore has 44 tackles, league-high six interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns this season. However, this isn’t even the most impressive part of his game. The wide receivers he covered this season were targeted 82 times, and he allowed zero TDs. Also, Gilmore’s 32.8 passer rating against is second-lowest in the league at the moment.

“I’m in a rhythm, and I’m just daring the quarterback to throw at me, and I’m just trying to make them pay…” – Gilmore added. “Playing against the best guy, you have to really focus, every play is important — if you don’t play well on one play, it can cost your team. I try to focus each and every play, be in tight-coverage, try to be in great shape.”
