NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award has been dominated in recent years by pass rushers and players who have the ability to disrupt the quarterback. This year, however, it could be secondary’s turn to have their winner.

New England Patriots’ cornerback Stephon Gilmore is considered to be the favorite for DPOY in 2019 thanks to his phenomenal season. Gilmore is shutting down opponents’ receivers at an impressive rate and is arguably the best player at his position at the moment. The 29-year-old himself also thinks he has an award-worthy campaign.

When asked about his chances to win the DPOY award, Gilmore said that there is “no question” that the honor will be his.

“I mean, my play speaks for itself,” said Gilmore during his appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Zolak and Bertrand Show. “If you really watch the tape each and every game, it’s no question.”

Stephon Gilmore has 44 tackles, league-high six interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns this season. However, this isn’t even the most impressive part of his game. The wide receivers he covered this season were targeted 82 times, and he allowed zero TDs. Also, Gilmore’s 32.8 passer rating against is second-lowest in the league at the moment.

“I’m in a rhythm, and I’m just daring the quarterback to throw at me, and I’m just trying to make them pay…” – Gilmore added. “Playing against the best guy, you have to really focus, every play is important — if you don’t play well on one play, it can cost your team. I try to focus each and every play, be in tight-coverage, try to be in great shape.”
