Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the Barcelona Open on Sunday. Alcaraz, the number one seed in the tournament, defeated Daniel Evans 6-2, 6-2 in Saturday’s semifinal.

Second seed Tsitsipas experienced a closer encounter against semifinal opponent Lorenzo Musetti, eventually outlasting the Italian to win 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

Alcaraz, who is eyeing his first clay court tournament win of the season, disposed of his opponent after just 1 hour and 20 minutes of play. “How you reach a final is important for your confidence, and I head into tomorrow with a great feeling,” the number one seed confessed. Alcaraz has not dropped a set in his four previous matches.

Having won in Buenos Aires and Indian Wells, Alcaraz is on the hunt for his third ATP trophy this year. Should he emerge triumphant in Barcelona, Alcaraz will have launched a successful title defense for the first time in his career.

As for Tsitsipas, the Greek national will be hoping to win his first title in Barcelona after making the final in both 2018 and 2021, losing both finals to 12-time winner Rafael Nadal. With a victory on Sunday, Tsitsipas will clinch the 10th ATP title of his career.

ATP world number 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas was the recipient of a round of boos yet again during his US Open fourth-round clash against Adrian Mannarino on Wednesday night. The Greek player defeated Mannarino 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-0.

The negative crowd reaction came after Tsitsipas took a toilet break, creating an eight-minute break between the end of the third set and the start of the fourth. Following the break, the momentum swung drastically in Tsitsipas’ favor.

“If I break a rule, sure, I’m guilty. I agree; I’m not doing something right,” Tsitsipas stated after the match. “If I’m staying within the guidelines, then what’s the issue?”

This is the second time that the 23-year-old star has been at the center of controversy regarding toilet breaks, with the Greek national taking a prolonged break during his grueling 4-hour match against Andy Murray in the previous round.

Following his 2-6, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Tsitsipas, Murray explained that he had lost respect for the youngster, stating: “It’s just disappointing because I feel it [the toilet break] influenced the outcome of the match.”

The world’s number one ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic once again showed his excellence in tough moments. Despite falling down into a 0-2 hole against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2021 French Open finals, Djokovic rallied back to defeat the Greek and to claim his second Roland Garros title.

The 6-7 (6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win made Djokovic the first male tennis player in the Open Era to win all four Grand Slams at least twice. He also now has 19 career Grand Slams, putting him just one behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who each have 20.

“I’m very proud, very happy. I don’t want to stop there,” said Djokovic at the press conference. “Hopefully I can keep on [winning] here in Roland Garros, at least one or two more times.”

By winning the French Open and previously the Australian Open, Djokovic now has a chance to win all four Grand Slams in a single year. If he manages to top Wimbledon and the US Open, he will become only the third male player to win the calendar-year Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic entered the match looking tired and sluggish, while youthful Stefanos Tsitsipas kept his game on point and won the first two sets. Djokovic took a locker room break before the third set, and it was a completely different game after that. His shots started to fall in, he was more composed, and his serve became impeccable.

Tsitsipas, who was playing in his first Grand Slam finals, didn’t know how to adjust to this sudden change of pace. While he scrambled to regain his dominance on the court, Djokovic had already erased the deficit, and it was too late to stop him in the fifth.

“I’d like to thank the Greek fans, and my team, who are constantly behind me, for my dreams. This is a long journey,” said Tsitsipas.
