Struggling Premier League club Southampton has appointed interim coach Ruben Selles as the team’s head coach until the end of the season, the club confirmed on Friday morning.

The 39-year-old Spanish coach was named as the Saints’ interim coach following the dismissal of previous head coach Nathan Jones on February 12. Jones was fired after losing nine out of his 14 games in charge, managing just one win in the Premier League during his tenure.

Left at the foot of the table with 21 points, Southampton managed to end its three-game winless streak in the Premier League during Selles’ first game in charge. The Spanish interim coach led his team to a shock 1-0 away victory at Chelsea, thereby sparking hopes of Premier League survival should the club manage to change its fortunes swiftly.

Named as the club’s third head coach this season, Selles also acted as interim manager when Ralph Hasenhuttl was dismissed from the role in November. During his brief time in charge, Selles guided Southampton to a penalty shootout victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup.

Premier League club Southampton confirmed on Thursday the appointment of Nathan Jones as the team’s new manager. Prior to accepting his new role, the Welsh national was the manager of Luton Town.

Jones will replace Ralph Hasenhuttl, who was dismissed due to the Saints’ poor start to the new season. Currently, the club is sitting in 18th place, having won just three of its 14 games so far. The Saints will be hoping that Jones’ leadership will help to change their fortunes and lift them out of the relegation zone.

“I know a lot about the club from back in the days of [Southampton’s former stadium] The Dell, to coming here to St Mary’s, and it’s a wonderful football club,” Jones said of his new team. The new manager confirmed that his personal connections to the club helped him to make the decision to join.

Jones’ first match in charge will be against Liverpool, who Southampton will pay a visit to on Saturday. Following the game, Jones will work to develop the squad during the World Cup break in an effort to prepare them for the return of club soccer on December 26.

Southampton officially announced the signing of center-back Mohammed Salisu on Wednesday, bringing in a key piece that they hope will become the cornerstone of the club’s defense for years to come.

Salisu, who at 21 years old, has been one of the breakout stars of La Liga over the past two seasons with Real Valladolid, joins Southampton after agreeing to a four-year contract with the English club.

Southampton reportedly paid the Ghanian center back’s $14 million release clause, which allowed them to negotiate a contract with the blossoming star.

The 21-year-old player appeared in 33 games for Valladolid in the 2019-20 season, becoming one of the leaders of a team defense that allowed only 43 goals last season, the sixth-lowest total in the league.

Known for his intimidating physical presence and large physique, Salisu has blossomed from a raw prospect into one of the continent’s top young defensive stars.

He is expected to play a key role at Southampton over the coming season as the team looks to break through into European contention after the team finished in 11th place in 2019-20.

Salisu has joined the team’s preseason training sessions and is expected to make his debut with the club next month.

Southampton will see out the 2019/20 Premier League campaign with a new leading voice after Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was stripped of captaincy on Wednesday.

Hojbjerg lost the armband after refusing to sign a new deal with Southampton.

“No, he will not be captain,” said the team’s manager Ralph Hasenhuttl during a press conference. “I spoke with him and we had an agreement, and made clear that if you decide not to extend your contract, you will not be captain of this team.”

Despite this, Hasenhuttl still sees Hojbjerg as an important member of his squad.

“I’ve spoken to him in the last few days and he knows that he is an important player for this club. I think we have found a good agreement,” he added.

English midfielder James Ward-Prowse, who is a product of club’s academy, will step in as Southampton’s captain for the rest of the season.

According to English media, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg doesn’t want to sign an extension with the club as he is looking to play in UEFA Champions League. The 24-year-old has one year left on his deal and can leave for free next summer.

Hojbjerg, who spent his youth career with Bayern Munich, joined Southampton in 2016. He played 129 games in all competitions for the club since then, managing to score five goals in the process.
