Struggling Premier League club Southampton has appointed interim coach Ruben Selles as the team’s head coach until the end of the season, the club confirmed on Friday morning.
The 39-year-old Spanish coach was named as the Saints’ interim coach following the dismissal of previous head coach Nathan Jones on February 12. Jones was fired after losing nine out of his 14 games in charge, managing just one win in the Premier League during his tenure.
Left at the foot of the table with 21 points, Southampton managed to end its three-game winless streak in the Premier League during Selles’ first game in charge. The Spanish interim coach led his team to a shock 1-0 away victory at Chelsea, thereby sparking hopes of Premier League survival should the club manage to change its fortunes swiftly.
Named as the club’s third head coach this season, Selles also acted as interim manager when Ralph Hasenhuttl was dismissed from the role in November. During his brief time in charge, Selles guided Southampton to a penalty shootout victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup.
