Girona defeated Sevilla 5-1 on Sunday evening as they continue to be the surprise package of Spain’s top flight this season. This win saw the overperforming team return to the top of the La Liga table.

While Sevilla opened the scoring through Isaac Romero’s 10th-minute strike, their jubilation was short-lived, as Ukranian striker Artem Dovbyk scored three goals in quick succession to secure a hat-trick within 19 minutes of play. The home team remained dictated the flow of play for the remainder of the game, with Viktor Tsygankov extending their lead in the 56th minute and Christian Stuani wrapping up their victory in the 89th minute.

Spanish La Liga club Sevilla have dismissed head coach Diego Alonso, the club announced on Saturday following the team’s crushing 3-0 loss at home to Getafe in the league. Alonso spent just 14 games in charge before parting ways with the club.

“We would like to communicate that Diego Alonso has been relieved of his duties as first-team head coach. We thank him for his efforts and wish him the best for the future,” the club’s statement read. Alonso was not given the opportunity to participate in the customary post-match press conference. Instead, the team simply stated that a replacement would be found as soon as possible.

Alonso joined the team in October to replace José Mendilibar, who led the team to the Europa League trophy last season. During his time in charge, Alonso failed to win any of his eight La Liga matches, with the team being defeated in all four of their Champions League fixtures. His only two victories as Sevilla coach came in the Copa del Rey, with Sevilla defeating teams from lower divisions.

Jose Mourinho is showing he is the master of European club competitions. Just a year after leading AS Roma to UEFA Europa Conference League, Mourinho has the Italian club in the finals of the UEFA Europa League.

Roma punched their UEL finals ticket after a second-leg goalless draw against Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday night. The first leg went to Roma, who got a 1-0 win at their Olimpico.

Standing in Mourinho’s way for consecutive seasons with European trophies is Sevilla. The Spanish club got a 3-2 win on aggregate against Juventus in the second semifinals matchup and hopes that the Europa League title can salvage their 2022-23 season. Sevilla is only 10th on the domestic La Liga standings.

The UEL final match is scheduled for 31 May and will be played at Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary.

AS Roma will return to the Europa League final match for the first time since 1990–91 when the competition was called UEFA Cup. They lost to Inter Milan in the two-game finals back then.

Bayern won the trophy thanks to a 2-1 extra-time victory over UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla on Thursday night. Things, however, didn’t look all that good for the Bundesliga giants early in the contest. 

Sevilla was the one taking the lead first, with Lucas Ocampos scoring from the penalty spot in the 13th minute. Bayern then responded with a Leon Goretzka goal in the 34th for 1-1 to end the first half.

Bayern entered the second half as the better team but didn’t manage to convert from multiple great looks. Sevilla, on the other hand, took a cautious approach and managed to see through the end of the regular period unscathed.

The extra time saw a similar approach by both sides, but Bayern managed to score this time. Substitute Javi Martinez scored a header towards the first period in extra time to give the German club a 2-1 lead, which ended up also being the final score.

“It was an intense game, but we deserved to win,” said Bayern’s manager Hansi Flick after the game. “We are not yet fully in our rhythm despite our big win over Schalke 04 on the weekend. However, Inter’s lead didn’t last long. Sevilla equalized thanks to Luuk de Jong in the 12th minute, who scored a header a pinpoint cross by veteran Jesus Navas. 

The action got quiet a bit for the next 20 minutes, only for things to get exciting again. This time it was Sevilla who got the lead, with another de Jong’s header finding its way past Samir Handanovic in 33rd minute. Still, they managed to hold the 2-1 result for just three minutes, as Italian club strike back via defender Diego Godin.

The second half saw a much more cautious game, although Inter had the opportunity to get ahead early in the period, but Lukaku couldn’t utilize the one-on-one situation with Sevilla’s goalkeeper. He did, however, found the net in 74th minute.

German midfielder Mario Gotze isn’t lacking offers since Borussia Dortmund opted not to extend his contract past this season. According to Sky Germany, the latest team to enter Gotze sweepstakes are La Liga side Sevilla.

Reportedly, Sevilla already made the first step and contacted Gotze’s representatives about a possible move. The Spanish club also presented their initial contract offer to the 28-year-old midfielder, although the terms remain unknown at the moment.

The title race also seems to be over, as Real Madrid now have four points more than Barcelona with two games left to play in the regular season.
