Girona defeated Sevilla 5-1 on Sunday evening as they continue to be the surprise package of Spain’s top flight this season. This win saw the overperforming team return to the top of the La Liga table.

While Sevilla opened the scoring through Isaac Romero’s 10th-minute strike, their jubilation was short-lived, as Ukranian striker Artem Dovbyk scored three goals in quick succession to secure a hat-trick within 19 minutes of play. The home team remained dictated the flow of play for the remainder of the game, with Viktor Tsygankov extending their lead in the 56th minute and Christian Stuani wrapping up their victory in the 89th minute.

“We are very happy because we have achieved one of our goals, which was to reach 52 points, the first was to avoid relegation,” Girona coach Michel stated after the game, showing the enormous gap between the club’s expectations going into the season and where they are now.
