Naomi Osaka, the former No. 1 tennis player in the world, had a disappointing return to the Grand Slams. Osaka was eliminated in the first round of the 2024 Australian Open by 16th-seeded Caroline Garcia.

Osaka, playing just her third match after a 15-month break, delivered a solid performance, but Garcia ultimately proved too much of a strong opponent, securing a win in straight sets (6-4, 7-6 (2)). Osaka failed to get a single break point while uncharacteristically committing double faults and misplacing key shots.

Osaka took a lengthy break from tennis in late 2022 to focus on her “wellbeing.” During that time, she also gave birth to her daughter Shai. The 26-year-old made a comeback at this year’s Brisbane International, where she reached the Round of 32.

Osaka’s elimination in the first round is her earliest exit from the Australian Open in eight appearances. She won the tournament twice, in 2019 and 2021.

“I felt like I did the best that I could possibly do. It was just really nice to be on Rod Laver again, hear the audience, how much they interacted with the match,” Osaka told ESPN after the match. “I have to tell myself, ‘Hey, like six months ago you were pregnant,’ stuff like that. Of course, there’s a voice in my head that is, ‘Who are you to think you can come back and immediately start winning matches?’”

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has set the date for her long-anticipated return to tennis.

In a statement shared earlier this week, Osaka said that she plans to play at Brisbane International, which will mark her first professional tennis match since September 2022.

Brisbane International takes place from December 31st to January 7th. This could possibly set up Osaka’s appearance at next year’s Australian Open. The 26-year-old player won the first Grand Slam tournament of the year twice before.

“I am really excited about getting back out on court and competing. I always love starting my season in Brisbane and can’t wait to return,” Osaka said. “It will set me up for a brilliant comeback this summer.”

Naomi Osaka played her most recent match at the 2022 Pan Pacific Open, where she was forced to retire due to an injury. Osaka initially planned to make a comeback at the 2023 Australian Open but withdrew herself just days before the tournament was scheduled to start. It was later revealed that Osaka was expecting her first child with rapper Cordae. The couple welcomed a baby girl in July.

Osaka won her first Grand Slam title in 2018, beating legendary Serena Williams in the US Open Finals. She won the same tournament again two years later while also adding Australian Open titles in 2019 and 2021. She has yet to make it past the third round at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Naomi Osaka hasn’t played any competitive tennis in 2023, but expect the four-time Grand Slam champion to make up for it next year. During a chat with ESPN at the US Open, Osaka hinted that she is planning to have a busy 2024 tennis season.

Osaka announced ahead of the 2023 Australian Open that she is taking a break from tennis due to pregnancy. The 25-year-old welcomed her first child, daughter Shai, with rapper Cordae in July.

While making an appearance on ESPN’s coverage of the 2023 US Open, Osaka was asked about her plans for next year. Osaka revealed that she not only intends to play in 2024 but will play a lot more tournaments compared to some previous years.

“It’s definitely way more tournaments than I used to play,” Osaka shared. “I think some people will be happy with that.”

According to Osaka, she wants to have a busy schedule to give herself more opportunity to return to form.

“At least I’m going to set myself up for a very good end of the year,” she added.

Osaka struggled in 2022, reaching the third round at the Australian Open before being eliminated in the first round at both the French Open and the US Open. She played her most recent match at the 2022 Pan Pacific Open last September, withdrawing from the tournament due to abdominal pain.

Two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka will need a new coach for the remainder of the 2022 tennis season and beyond. Wim Fissette, who has been with Osaka since 2019, announced on Wednesday that he won’t be her coach anymore.

“It has been a privilege to coach Naomi since 2019 and see her grow into the Champion she has become,” Fissette wrote on Instagram. “She has inspired a whole new generation to fall in love with the game & to speak up for what they believe in, and it’s been incredible to play a part in that journey.”

Fissette added that he wishes Osaka “all the best” while looking forward to the next step in his career.

After an unspectacular professional career, Fissette ventured into coaching with fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters in 2009. With Fissette as her coach, Clijsters won two US Open titles and added the Australian Open title to her resume.

Fissette split with Clijsters in 2011 and went on to work with the likes of Simona Halep and Victoria Azarenka on two occasions. He also helped Angelique Kerber win Wimbledon in 2018 before joining Osaka’s team.

Osaka won US Open in 2020 and the Australian Open in 2021 while being coached by Fissette. However, her performances have been below her standards lately, and it appears the Japanese star player decided she needs a fresh voice.

Barbora Krejcikova’s bid for back-to-back French Open titles came to an early end. Krejcikova, who won the 2021 Roland Garros, is out of this year’s tournament after a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 loss to teenager Diane Parry in the first round.

Krejcikova entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and was expected to make a deep run playing her first tournament since the elbow injury she suffered back in February. However, the unseeded Parry’s energy proved to be too much of an obstacle for the veteran.

Parry, ranked No. 96 in the world, has become the lowest-ranked woman to beat the No. 2 seed after Kim Clijsters lost to 114th-ranked Arantxa Rus in 2011. The 19-year-old player will now face Camila Osorio in the second round to try and make her best career French Open run.

The elimination of Krejcikova, who became just the third woman in Roland Garros history to exit the tournament in the first round after winning it the year prior, wasn’t the only surprise of the early part of the tournament. Former No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka also ended her run at French Open. Osaka was ousted in two sets (7-5, 6-4) by American Amanda Anisimova.

Naomi Osaka will take a break from tennis after her shocking elimination from the 2021 US Open. Osaka, who is the tournament’s reigning champion, was ousted from the tournament by the unseeded Leylah Fernandez in a 7-5, 6-7, 4-6 third-round match.

At the post-match conference, Osaka, who was open about her recent struggles with mental health, admitted that tennis isn’t making her happy anymore. She then revealed that she doesn’t know when she could play again and announced an indefinite break from the sport.

“Basically I feel like I’m kind of at this point where I’m trying to figure out what I want to do, and I honestly don’t know when I’m going to play my next tennis match,” said Osaka. “I think I’m going to take a break from playing for a while.”

Osaka also took a break after withdrawing from the 2021 French Open in May and ended up missing Wimbledon as a result. She returned to tennis in August with an appearance at the 2021 Western & Southern Open.

While Osaka managed to win the first set against Fernandez, she never seemed to have settled in rhythm. She was visibly frustrated throughout the match and even smashed her racket at one point. This allowed Fernandez to survive the second set tiebreak and then to cruise to a third set win carried by the support of the audience at the Flushing Meadows.

Fernandez will now play against another US Open champion Angelique Kerber in the fourth round. Regardless of the outcome, this will be the best result at the Grand Slams for the 18-year-old star.

We officially have our 2021 Australian Open champions, and their names are Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka. Djokovic was victorious over Daniil Medvedev in the men’s singles, and Osaka took care of Jennifer Brady in the women’s match.

Both of these battles were expected to be hard-fought, and they were—although one of them was a bit closer than the other.

The competition between Osaka and Brady was the closer one, with Brady putting up a strong performance, unwilling to concede easily.

In the first set of the women’s match, Osaka and Brady were tied 4-4 before Osaka closed it out strongly. In the second set, Osaka looked a lot more comfortable and ended up defeating Brady in convincing fashion.

In the men’s game, however, Djokovic held down a dominant hand pretty much the whole time.

In the first set, Djokovic started off with a 3-0 lead, and although Medvedev eventually tied it up, Djokovic closed it out with a 7-5 victory.

However, the remaining sets were a lot easier for Djokovic, taking advantage of a handful of errors on the part of Medvedev. Djokovic’s experience clearly paid off with the stakes so high, which is why he was able to snag that Australian Open title.

The reigning US Open champion Naomi Osaka won’t be chasing more Grand Slam glory this year. Osaka issued a statement on social media on Thursday announcing that she won’t play at 2020 French Open.

According to Osaka, she is dealing with hamstring issues and believes that she won’t have enough time to recover before the start of the tournament. French Open is set to start on September 21st, after being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Unfortunately I won’t be able to play the French Open this year,” Osaka wrote on Twitter. “My hamstring is still sore so I won’t have enough time to prepare for the clay — these 2 tournaments came too close to each other for me this time. I wish the organizers and players all the best.”

Despite winning the Australian Open and lifting the US Open trophy twice, Naomi Osaka didn’t see much success at French Open. She played the tournament four times and reached the third round three times, which stands as her biggest success. Osaka was eliminated last year by Katerina Siniakova.

Osaka isn’t the only high-profile tennis player to miss the tournament this year. Defending French Open champ and No.1 ranked tennis player in the world Ashleigh Barty also decided not to take part, citing concerns over coronavirus pandemic.

Naomi Osaka maybe isn’t the No.1 tennis player in the world anymore, but she recently got an even more lucrative title. According to Forbes magazine, Osaka is now the highest-earning female athlete in the world.

Forbes estimates that Osaka earned around $37.4 million in the past 12 months from tournament prizes, endorsement deals, and other appearances. With this kind of money in the bank, the 22-year-old Japanese managed to top the legendary Serena Williams, who netted $36 million during the same period. She also cracked the overall list of highest-earning athletes, sitting at No. 29.

In each of the previous four years, Williams ranked first on the list of highest-earning female athletes each time.

Naomi Osaka overtook the No.1 position with a combination of tennis-generated incomes and lucrative sponsorship deals. Osaka had much success on the court in the last two years, winning US Open and Australian Open titles while ranking high on other tournaments. Additionally, she became the face for a number of high-profile brands, like Procter & Gamble, All Nippon Airways, and Nissin.

The 2019 Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka is once again looking for a new coach. Osaka announced on Friday that she parted ways with Jermaine Jenkins, who coached her for the previous six months.

Jenkins became Osaka’s coach in March, taking over from Sascha Bajin. Their collaboration, however, wasn’t as fruitful as expected.

With Jenkins as her coach, Osaka only reached the third round at French Open and then was eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon. She also had a disappointing campaign to defend her US Open title, being eliminated in the fourth round.

“I’m super grateful for the time we spent together and the things I learned on and off the court, but I feel like now is an appropriate time for a change,” – Osaka wrote on social media, confirming her decision.

Changing coaches is becoming something of a frequent occurrence for Naomi Osaka. After being coached by her father early in her career, Osaka worked with the likes of Harold Solomon and David Taylor. Her career, however, really took off when Sascha Bajin came into the mix.

Bajin became Osaka’s coach in 2018 and helped her become the No.1 ranked tennis player in the world and win two Grand Slam titles. However, shortly after her Australian Open win, Osaka announced their split, saying that she “wouldn’t put success over [her] happiness.”
