Barbora Krejcikova’s bid for back-to-back French Open titles came to an early end. Krejcikova, who won the 2021 Roland Garros, is out of this year’s tournament after a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 loss to teenager Diane Parry in the first round.

Krejcikova entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and was expected to make a deep run playing her first tournament since the elbow injury she suffered back in February. However, the unseeded Parry’s energy proved to be too much of an obstacle for the veteran.

Parry, ranked No. 96 in the world, has become the lowest-ranked woman to beat the No. 2 seed after Kim Clijsters lost to 114th-ranked Arantxa Rus in 2011. The 19-year-old player will now face Camila Osorio in the second round to try and make her best career French Open run.

The elimination of Krejcikova, who became just the third woman in Roland Garros history to exit the tournament in the first round after winning it the year prior, wasn’t the only surprise of the early part of the tournament. Former No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka also ended her run at French Open. Osaka was ousted in two sets (7-5, 6-4) by American Amanda Anisimova.
