The Milwaukee Brewers will be without their All-Star right-hander Brandon Woodruff for the entire 2024 MLB season. Woodruff confirmed this in a chat with reporters over the weekend.

Woodruff underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder in October. At the time, it was believed that he could recover in time to play late in 2024. However, that doesn’t seem like an option now.

“Honestly, I’m going [to] be the strongest I’ll ever be at any point in my career because I’m going [to] have a year and just basically get my body ready for pitching,” Woodruff said via Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Woodruff was limited to just 11 starts in 2023 while dealing with a shoulder injury. He went 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA and 74 strikeouts while pitching a complete-game shutout in a 12–0 home win over the Miami Marlins.

After the end of the season, Woodruff became a free agent, and it was believed that his time with the Brewers had come to an end. However, the two sides ended up agreeing to a two-year, $17.5 million contract with a mutual option for 2026 in February.

Woodruff, who made his MLB debut with the Brewers in 2017, has a career 46–26 record with a 3.10 ERA and 788 strikeouts. He was an All-Star in 2019 and 2021.

Milwaukee Brewers star Corbin Burnes left his team’s 7-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night with a left pectoral strain. Burnes picked up the strain in the fourth inning when placing a tag on Eugenio Suarez at the end of a rundown.

Despite trying to see out the game, Burnes left in the sixth inning. Still, Brewers manager Craig Counsell believes that Burnes’ injury is not severe in nature and that the pitcher could play in the next game depending on his recovery progress.

“I think it just kind of overstretched it. So I’m not really sure what happened,” Burnes said of his injured pectoral. “I didn’t feel it when it happened at the time. When I came back after the sixth warming up, I could feel starting to tighten up and kind of get crampy.” It was at this point that Burnes exited the game.

During his 5⅓ innings, Burnes allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts, thereby limiting the Mariners to three runs and handing the Brewers the win.

Counsell and Burnes have both confirmed that the next step now is to have the pitcher re-evaluated on Tuesday with the hopes that he will be able to return to play in the next game.

The Milwaukee Brewers might have won the arbitration case against their starting pitcher Corbin Burnes, but they got one clearly unhappy player in their clubhouse as a result. Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Burnes said that the way Brewers handled the arbitration hearing “definitely hurt” his relationship with the franchise.

Burnes and Brewers elected to go to arbitration after being unable to agree on the player’s salary for the 2023 MLB season. The 2021 NL Cy Young winner asked for $10.75 million while the team argued he should be paid $10.01 million. The arbitrator ended up siding with the Brewers.

Burnes attended the arbitration hearing and was displeased with some of the arguments the Brewers made while presenting their case.

“Obviously, it’s tough to hear. It’s tough to take. They’re trying to do what they can to win a hearing,” Burnes told the reporters. “There’s no denying that the relationship is definitely hurt from what [transpired] over the last couple of weeks. There’s really no way of getting around that.”

According to Burnes, the Brewers singled him out as the biggest reason why they missed out on playoffs in 2022.

“That’s something that probably doesn’t need be said,” the 28-year-old, who is set to become a free agent after 2024, added.

Burnes wasn’t as efficient in 2022 compared to his Cy Young-winning campaign but still produced a solid season. He finished with a 12-8 record in 33 starts while compiling a 2.94 ERA and career-high 243 strikeouts.

Miley was 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA with the Chicago Cubs last season, however, injuries largely restricted his playing time. The 36-year-old player was placed on the injured list on three occasions last season, including for a sore shoulder.

Plagued by injuries for the majority of his 12-year career, Miley himself observed how he would follow up a healthy season with one filled with injury setbacks. Having made 32 starts in 2017, Miley played just 16 the following season before making 33 appearances for the Houston Astros in 2019. he played just six games for the Cincinnati Reds in 2020 before making 28 starts the following year.

The veteran pitcher will fit into the Brewers’ rotation alongside Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes, and Freddy Peralta. During his time with eight different teams, Miley has amassed a career 4.13 ERA in 292 games.

Kolten Wong will remain with the Milwaukee Brewers through 2023 after the team decided to pick up his $10 million team option. This represents the first major move made by the Brewers since the promotion of Matt Arnold to the role of president of baseball operations last month.

Wong batted .251 this season, scoring a career-high 15 home runs along with 47 RBIs and 17 steals in 134 games. The veteran second baseman also recorded a .339 on-base percentage and a .430 slugging percentage. Wong’s season was not entirely positive, however, as he did make 17 errors, thereby matching his career high.

A two-time Gold Glove winner, Wong spent his first eight MLB seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he decided against signing a $12.5 million option that would have kept him on at the team in 2021. Sensing a trade opportunity, the Brewers signed Wong on a two-year contract worth $18 million that included the 2023 team option that Wong recently agreed to.

During his first season in Milwaukee, the second baseman made an immediate impact on his new team, hitting .272 with 14 home runs, 50 RBIs, and 12 steals in 116 games. More importantly, Wong helped the Brewers to clinch the National League Central title.

The Milwaukee Brewers have released veteran outfielder Lorenzo Cain on Wednesday. The team confirmed the move via their social media.

Cain was previously designated for assignment after struggling in 43 appearances this season. He hit an abysmal .179 while managing just one home run and eight RBIs.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the two-time All-Star. While it wouldn’t be surprising some championship contenders make a move for him to add depth, Cain could also head down the retirement lane. The 36-year-old hinted at this shortly after receiving designated for assignment notice.

“I haven’t been performing like I would’ve liked, but the situation is what it is,” said Cain. “I’ve had a great career. I can’t really be upset about anything, but, yeah, it’s time.”

Lorenzo Cain is best known for his time with the Kansas City Royals. He played seven years with the franchise (2011-2017) and helped them win a World Series in 2015, the same year he earned his first All-Star appearance. Cain also received ALCS MVP honors in 2014.

Cain’s career stats in MLB include a .283 batting average, 1,216 hits, 87 homers, and 453 RBIs. He also has 190 stolen bases and was a Fielding Bible Award recipient three times.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost their ace Devin Williams for the upcoming MLB playoffs due to a bizarre set of circumstances. Williams got carried away celebrating the Brewers winning the NL Central and punched a wall. This caused him to break his hand and will now require surgery.

Williams confirmed the news himself while talking with reporters on Wednesday.

“I’m pretty upset with myself, there’s no one to blame but me,” Williams said. “I feel like I’ve let my team down, our coaching staff, our fans, you know—everyone. I know how big of a role I play on this team and there’s a lot of people counting on me.”

According to Yahoo Sports, Williams didn’t even realize he was dealing with an injury until coming to practice. He felt some discomfort while throwing and underwent an X-ray test that showed the fracture in his throwing hand.

There is a chance that Williams manages to return to the mound in 2021, but the Brewers would have to make the World Series, according to the team’s president of baseball operations David Stearn.

Devin Williams had an outstanding rookie year in shortened 2020 MLB season, winning the NL Rookie of the Year and NL Reliever of the Year honors while also being selected to All-MLB Second Team. Williams picked up where he left off in 2021, posting 2.50 ERA and having 87 strikeouts in 58 games.

NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has decided to strengthen his ties with Milwaukee even further by becoming the new part-owner of the city’s MLB franchise, the Brewers. The move, which was unveiled on Friday, comes less than a month after Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to an NBA title.

Antetokounmpo will join the ownership group headlined by businessmen Mark Attanasio. He is also its first new individual member since Attanasio became the Brewers’ principal owner in 2005.

“The city of Milwaukee means so much to me,” said Antetokounmpo in a statement. “I am honored to be joining the Brewers ownership group to further my commitment and dedication to this great community. I take great pride in my city, and I’m excited about what we can build together.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t the only big star athlete from the area to invest in the local team. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and reigning NFL MVP has been a part-owner of Antetokounmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks since 2018.

Antetokounmpo previously decided to stay in Milwaukee for the foreseeable future by agreeing on a new deal with the Bucks. He inked a five-year, $228 million supermax extension that will keep him with the team at least through the 2025-26 NBA season.

Becoming part of the Brewers ownership might be a way for Antetokounmpo to be even more connected with Milwaukee, but it should also prove to be a good business decision. The Brewers are on an upward trajectory, making the playoffs in each of the past three years and reaching National League Championship Series in 2018. The team is also having a great 2021 season, sitting at the top of the NL East with a 65-56 record.

Milwaukee Brewers legend Ryan Braun still hasn’t made a decision about his future as a baseball player. Braun recently told ESPN that he is leaning towards retirement but could change his mind at some point.

Braun spent his entire career with the Brewers, debuting for the franchise back in 2007. At the end of the 2020 MLB season, the organization opted against bringing back the 37-year-old veteran, declining the mutual $15 million option on his contract.

“I’m strongly leaning in the direction of being done as an active player,” Braun told ESPN.

Still, the 2011 NL MVP has left the “door open” for playing another year.

“But I think you can always push that decision back. I’m still young enough, still working out, still in shape,” he added. “If something were to change, I might as well leave that door open as long as possible.”

It appears the only way Braun will suit up again is if the Brewers decide to open him a new deal. When asked if he would play for another franchise, he said that he “can’t foresee” such a scenario.

Ryan Braun played 1766 career games with the Brewers, posting a .296 batting average with a franchise-record 352 home runs and 1154 RBIs. He won the Silver Slugger Award five times and has six All-Star nods.

Braun had a career-worst campaign in 2020, dealing with a back injury and missing 21 games. He batted .233 with eight homers and 26 RBIs.

The Milwaukee Brewers and free-agent second baseman Kolten Wong have reportedly agreed to a multi-year contract, according to MLB reporter Jon Morosi.

Wong, a Gold Glove winner at his position the past two seasons, will join the team on a two-year contract valued at $18 million, which includes a team option for a third year which would take the total value of the contract to $26 million.

The Hawaii native joins a former division rival after spending the first eight seasons of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. Once considered a top-100 prospect in the game, Wong established himself as a dependable defensive second baseman that frustrated fans at times with struggles at the plate.

A disappointing offensive performance that saw him hit only .265 with one home run was part of the reason that the Cardinals declined his team option for 2021, making him a free agent.

Now, Wong will become Milwaukee’s everyday second baseman, and young star Keston Hiura will move over to first base. This is a move that should help the Brewers strengthen their infield defensively and thus fills an important hole in their roster.

Expect the signing of the new Brewers second baseman to become official over next couple of days ahead of the start of Spring Training at the end of this month.
