The Milwaukee Brewers lost their ace Devin Williams for the upcoming MLB playoffs due to a bizarre set of circumstances. Williams got carried away celebrating the Brewers winning the NL Central and punched a wall. This caused him to break his hand and will now require surgery.

Williams confirmed the news himself while talking with reporters on Wednesday.

“I’m pretty upset with myself, there’s no one to blame but me,” Williams said. “I feel like I’ve let my team down, our coaching staff, our fans, you know—everyone. I know how big of a role I play on this team and there’s a lot of people counting on me.”

According to Yahoo Sports, Williams didn’t even realize he was dealing with an injury until coming to practice. He felt some discomfort while throwing and underwent an X-ray test that showed the fracture in his throwing hand.

There is a chance that Williams manages to return to the mound in 2021, but the Brewers would have to make the World Series, according to the team’s president of baseball operations David Stearn.

Devin Williams had an outstanding rookie year in shortened 2020 MLB season, winning the NL Rookie of the Year and NL Reliever of the Year honors while also being selected to All-MLB Second Team. Williams picked up where he left off in 2021, posting 2.50 ERA and having 87 strikeouts in 58 games.
