Manny Pacquiao, the only eight-division champion in boxing history, announced his retirement from the sport on Tuesday night. The Filipino boxer is just one month shy of turning 43 years old.

The winner of 12 world titles, Pacquiao won his first belt at 108 pounds. His highest title-winning weight was 154 pounds. Affectionately known as “PacMan”, Pacquiao announced his retirement in a 14-plus-minute retirement video on social media.

“Even me, I’m amazed at what I have done”, PacMan remarked. “It is difficult for me to accept that my time as a boxer is over. Today, I am announcing my retirement. I never thought that this day would come. As I hang up my boxing gloves, I would like to thank the whole world, especially the Filipino people, for supporting Manny Pacquiao.”

With a 62-8-2 record, Pacquiao has achieved 39 KOs in his career. While initially scheduled to face unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. last month, the fight had to be postponed due to Spence suffering a detached retina. As a result, Pacquiao was slated to face Yordenis Ugas instead.

Viewed as the favorite going into the fight, an aging Pacquiao was unable to hit peak performance against Ugas, going on to lose by way of unanimous decision.

Manny Pacquiao, one of the best boxers of all time, hasn’t put down his gloves for good after all. The 42-year-old fighter will return to the ring after two years of absence on August 21st to fight IBF and WBC welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr.

Pacquiao confirmed the news on his social media on Friday.

Reportedly, both boxers already signed on to fight, while the venue remains unknown at the moment.

After the news broke out, Manny Pacquiao Promotions president Sean Gibbons told ESPN that Pacquiao wanted to face Spence as he still wants to fight the best.

“He’s not going to make a fool of himself fighting YouTubers or social media guys like Floyd Mayweather is, and he wants to continue his legacy,” Gibbons added, alluding to Mayweather’s upcoming exhibition fight against controversial YouTube star Logan Paul. “He’s always fought the best, and he doesn’t want to change now.”

Manny Pacquiao is entering the fight against Spence with a 62-7-2 record as a pro. He had his last fight in 2019 against Keith Thurman, winning via split-decision and defending his WBA title. Pacquiao, who also has a political career as Senator of the Philippines, was stripped of his title due to inactivity in January 2021.

Spence, on the other hand, is undefeated in his 27 fights as a pro. He knocked out 21 opponents, while six matches finished via decision. The 31-year-old American has been IBF champion since 2017 and WBC champion since 2019.

Retired UFC star Conor McGregor appears to be ready for his second boxing match. After facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2017, McGregor will now apparently enter the ring with another boxing legend, Manny Pacquiao.

McGregor announced the news on his social media, saying that the fight will take place “in the Middle East.”

The plans for the fight were later confirmed by McGregor’s manager Audie Attar, who told ESPN that the two camps are having active discussions. However, Attar added that the deal hadn’t been finalized yet.

The news comes after UFC President Dana White recently told SportsCenter that UFC and Conor McGregor are working on “some fun stuff” together for the beginning of 2021. UFC co-promoted McGregor’s fight vs. Mayweather, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they are on board to do the same with Pacquiao bout.

McGregor, who announced that he is retiring from mixed martial art earlier this year, is 0-1 as a professional boxer. Pacquiao, on the other hand, has a 62-7 record with two draws.

People really love a good underdog story and Las Vegas gave us a new one this weekend. Manny Pacquiao managed to beat the WBA Super champion Keith Thurman, becoming the welterweight champion.

With this victory, Pacquiao became the oldest man to claim this title. Thurman was undefeated so far and he said that he’ll send the 40-year-old fighter into his retirement but to everyone’s surprise he left the ring defeated.

The Filipino started the fight really well, knocking down Thurman in the opening round with a strong right hook. They continued a stunning and fierce struggle that lasted 12 rounds with both of the boxers showing great skills and determination. Finally, the boxing match ended with Pacquiao’s victory after the two judges gave 115-112 for Pacquiao and one gave 114-113 for Thurman.

During his long and really prosperous career, Pacquiao has fought 71 fights, including his last, and he has lost only seven of those fights. After the match, he said he thinks he will fight next year as well.

Thurman is 10 years younger than his opponent and he had 29 victories so far, going for his 30th.

Manny Pacquiao retained his WBA world welterweight title after 12 rounds of dominating Adrien Broner for a convincing victory determined by points.

The Filipino, 40, landed 112 of 568 blows while barely receiving any throughout the match. Broner, who had spent the days before the bout creating controversies, proved to be more talk and less action when it mattered. He landed only 50 of 295 blows, and had no more than seven blows in any round.

“I proved in my last fight against (Lucas) Matthysse and now I proved it again. The Manny Pacquiao journey will still continue,” he said. “I wanted to push more, but my trainer said, ‘Don’t be careless. Wait for him, counter,’ and that’s what I did.”

After the match, the 40-year-old challenged Mayweather to a rematch.

“Tell (Floyd) to come back to the ring and we will fight,” Pacquiao said. “I’m willing to fight again with Floyd Mayweather if he’s willing to come back to boxing.”

Mayweather, who was also in the arena, digressed from Pacquiao’s challenge and instead commented on the match, calling it “a chess matchup.”

Broner, on the other hand, expressed his discontentment at the outcome of the bout, claiming to have won. Everyone in the arena laughed at him before booing,

“I beat him,” he said despite being dominated throughout the match. “I clearly won the last seven.”

The three judges in the arena awarded Pacquiao the win at 117-111, 116-112, and 116-112.

Veteran boxer Manny Pacquiao believes that he still has a few more fights left in him.

Pacquiao’s last fight was a controversial loss against Jeff Horn in Australia last year and he is currently preparing for his first fight in a year which will be against Argentine WBA welterweight world champion Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lampur in July.

“Definitely this is not my last fight,” the 39-year-old Filipino said at a news conference in the Malaysian capital on Friday to promote the fight.

“I want my last fight to be in the Philippines, but I still have a couple more fights till I retire,” said the former eight-division world champion and serving senator in his homeland.

This will be the first title defence for Matthysse (39-4) and Pacquiao revealed that he is expecting a tough bout.

“Matthysse’s style is very aggressive. He’ll want to come inside and fight toe-to-toe. You won’t see running or dancing in the ring,” said Pacquiao.

Some of the biggest athletes in the world have gone through some major hurdles to get to the top. A select few of them wind up changing the lives of many people in the process. This is the tale of one of the most prolific figures to ever lace up a pair of boxing gloves.

Struggling To Live

Frederick Manligas Nacino

Born in the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao had big dreams just like any other kid. Unfortunately, he dealt with some major issues. While attending the sixth grade, his parents separated when his father’s infidelity was exposed, and he dropped out of high school because of poverty issues. In his home country, poverty is a major issue, and while he was growing up, nearly half of the population were living well below the poverty line.

Confused at what to do, Pacquiao turned to his uncle Sardo Mejia for advice. The man taught Pacquiao about boxing and what it can do for the soul. “If it wasn’t for me, there would be no world champion Manny Pacquiao,” stated Mejia.

He started training Pacquiao in boxing, and at the age of 12, the future world champion won his first fight against a 16-year-old boxer in General Santos City. “For Uncle Sardo, it was the ultimate blessing that his little nephew shared his favourite hobby,” Pacquiao stated in his autobiography. “Even though he had no formal training, we both took it seriously and knew that we were going to be champions one day.”

While the victory was grand, it didn’t give Manny the spark he needed to go forth with this newfound career. Unfortunately, that came from the death of his friend Eugene Barutag in the ring, who was aspiring to be a famous boxer just like him. “Even though he died, I thought ‘I will continue our dream, our battle,'” Pacquiao said.

The Mark Of A Champion

Pacquiao quickly ascended up the weight division with an astonishing 32-2 record and a run with the WBC International super bantamweight title. His big break came on June 23, 2001, when he fought Lehlo Ledwaba for the IBF super bantamweight title. This wasn’t an ordinary match for Pacquiao. This was his first match in the United States, and with it taking place at the iconic MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the pressure was on.

That night, he showed the entire world what the Philippines already knew, and he captured the title.

It didn’t end there. During his illustrious career, Pacquiao’s popularity and skill have earned an estimated net worth of $190 million.

A Hero To His People

In 2007, Pacquiao shifted into politics with a run for a seat in the Philippine House of Representatives. While he lost in a major blowout, he won a seat in the Sarangani province in 2010 and was re-elected in 2013. In 2015, he drew media attention when he announced plans to run for Senator.

“I will not be absent because the whole country would be my responsibility,” he said in a press release. Under the United Nationalist Alliance party, he was one of 12 new members of the Senate, and with 16 million votes, he was one of the most popular in the bunch.

Pacquiao officially retired from boxing in April 2016 to focus on being a Senator, but he came out of retirement eight months later to face Jessie Vargas for the WBO welterweight title. Eight months after winning the belt, Pacquiao would lose it to Jeff Horn in Australia.

While many people assume Pacquiao would challenge the boxer for a rematch, that would be on the backburner as violence in his home country continues to escalate. Whether he’s facing an opponent in the ring or facing another issue in his home country, Manny Pacquiao is living proof that determination and a strong mindset will bring you success.

Despite his bold predictions, Conor McGregor didn’t manage to upset Floyd Mayweather. In one of the most hyped boxing matches of past couple of years, Mayweather defeated UFC fighter Conor McGregor in the 10th round by TKO. This meant Floyd Mayweather remained undefeated, retiring once again, but this time with a 50-0 record, passing the great Rocky Marciano. Of course, this fight being counted into Mayweather’s record won’t sit well with everyone. There are plenty of those who believe that a fight against a fighter who didn’t have previous boxing experience shouldn’t be a part of his record.

For first 3 rounds, McGregor put up a good fight, landing a couple of solid punches. The 4th round saw Mayweather waking up as McGregor was already looking tired. Mayweather said that he and his team planned for this all along. The goal was to let McGregor “shoot his shots early” and finish it later in the match. Mayweather started to land punches and combos while exhausted McGregor didn’t have an adequate answer. In the 10th round, McGregor was getting hit with clean punches all over the place, and referee Robert Byrd had to step in and end the match. After the fight, McGregor wasn’t too happy about the match being stopped, saying he was just a bit fatigued and could have carried on.

According to CompuBox, Floyd Mayweather landed 170 out of 320 punches (53%), while Conor McGregor landed 111 out of 430 (26%). Interesting thing is that McGregor managed to land more punches than Manny Pacquiao, who landed 81 punches in his 12 rounds against Mayweather. Take a look at all of the Shostats from Compubox below.

Despite the entire buzz that was created around this fight, the 20,000 seats T-Mobile arena wasn’t packed, with 14,623 people in attendance. It looks like ticket prices ranging from $500 to $10,000 were just a bit too much.
