LA Galaxy have secured the transfer of attacking midfielder Gabriel Pec from Vasco Da Gama, paying a club-record fee of $10 million. This breaks the previous record transfer fee that Galaxy paid to lure in Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez from Sevilla in 2020.

In addition, the Los Angeles-based team could pay an additional $1.5 million if certain incentives are met, while Vasco Da Gama will retain 30% of Pec’s rights if the player is subsequently transferred to another team.

Pec proved to be a key player for Vasco in Brazil’s Serie A last year, scoring 14 goals and providing five assists across 50 games. The Brazilian forward forms part of the Galaxy’s plan to rebuild in 2024 following several disappointing seasons in the MLS. The team last won the MLS Cup in 2014.

The Los Angeles Galaxy have added another big name to their roster. On Friday, the club officially confirmed the signing of Brazilian winger Douglas Costa from Gremio. Douglas is a well-known name in the soccer world, having previously played with Seria A giants Juventus and Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich.

According to Galaxy’s official announcement, Costa will initially arrive in Los Angeles on a six-month loan. After the loan agreement expires, the 31-year-old winger will then permanently join the club as a Designated Player on a deal through the 2023 MLS season.

Costa joined Gremio, the club he started his professional career with, in the summer of 2021. He played 26 games for the Brazil side and scored three goals to go with two assists. This wasn’t enough to help Gremio avoid relegation, which is the main reason why Costa decided to seek a move.

Douglas Costa made a name for himself while playing for the Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk. In 2015, he moved to Bayern Munich, where he spent two seasons and won two Bundesliga trophies. He left Germany in 2016 to join Juventus, where he further added to his trophy resume by winning three Seria A titles.

“Douglas is a world-class player and a proven champion at the highest level. His capacity to create and finish will add yet another level to our attack,” said LA Galaxy’s head coach Greg Vanney in a statement. “We are excited to integrate him into the team as we push toward the start of the season.”

Former Los Angeles Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid died Tuesday at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center after a long struggle battle with a heart condition.

“Today’s news comes as a shock and a devastating blow to our entire community across MLS and US Soccer,” Seattle Sounders owner Adrian Hanauer said. “Sigi was someone I respected immensely, not only for his success as a coach and dedication to his craft, but more importantly as a man and someone that truly left a positive mark on the people he encountered every day.

Schmid holds the record for the winningest coach in Major League Soccer with 266 wins acquired both in regular and postseason wins. The Germany-born moved to California with his family at the age of four years.

He began his coaching career in 1999 with the Galaxy and helped them win the CONCAF title in 2000. He left LA in 2004 and joined the Columbus Crew in 2006 and won the 2008 league championship with them. He coached the Sounders later on before returning to LA in 2016. He resigned this September to concentrate on his health.

“Sigi was passionate for the game, a tireless worker, and was loved by his players,” former USMNT coach Bruce Arena said. “His accomplishment at every level were truly remarkable and he will be missed.”

During Sigi’s long and successful career, he also won five U.S. Open Cups and won three NCAA championships at UCLA, a record that got him inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.

Things aren’t exactly great for Los Angeles Galaxy at the start of 2018 MLS season. Although they have acquired Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the team has been struggling and only managed to win five games out of 13 played. The struggles continued on Wednesday night when Galaxy suffered a 2-3 defeat to FC Dallas.

Ibrahimovic, who came back from a suspension in the match against Dallas and scored two goals, didn’t shy away from his part of the responsibility for Galaxy’s poor form.

I don’t want to blame nobody,” – said the 36-year-old forward after the game. “I blame always myself when we are not winning. I’m one of many who has to do much more than what I am doing. So I keep working hard and keep pushing.

According to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the fact that they are losing games to inferior teams makes it harder for him and his teammates.

The thing is if we play against a team like Real Madrid or Barcelona and we lose, I will say, ‘Yeah, we did the hard work, we tried everything we did,’ but we’re not playing against those teams,” – said Ibrahimovic. “Because the quality [of the MLS opponents] is not so high, and they’re not better than us. Opposite, we’re better than them, but they’re winning the games, and that’s the difference.

How do you fix it? By winning the game, hopefully” – he added.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic joined LA Galaxy from Manchester United in March 2018, and immediately showed the impact he could have by scoring two goals in his debut. Ibrahimovic played 9 games in MLS and scored 5 goals in total.
