The LA Galaxy’s already disappointing 2023 MLS season just got a lot worse. The team announced on Friday that their star forward and captain, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, suffered a torn ACL and will be out for the remainder of the season.

Hernandez got hurt on a noncontact play midway through the first half of the U.S. Open Cup clash against Real Salt Lake earlier this week. Real went on to win the game 3-2.

This is a tough blow for Galaxy, who are currently sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference standings with just three wins from 15 games. While Hernandez managed only one goal this season, he is the face of the franchise and one of the locker room leaders, so his absence might result in an even bigger downfall for the LA team.

Hernandez will be out of contract at the end of the 2023 MLS season, leading many to predict that this is the last we’ve seen of him in Galaxy’s jersey. There are also some fears that Chicharito might end his career due to the injury.

Still, Galaxy’s head coach Greg Vanney believes Chicharito will return next year.

“I know with his work rate, and with his passion and desire to be out there, he’s going to do the work, and he’s going to put himself in position to come back and continue to play the game,” Vanney told reporters.

LA Galaxy will soon have one of its best players back on the pitch. According to Galaxy’s head coach Greg Vanney, forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has recovered from his hamstring injury and is “ready” to make his season debut.

According to Vanney, if everything goes well, Chicharito will play in Galaxy’s game against Houston Dynamo over the weekend.

“He’ll train full all this week, he’s trained partially [in] some of the last sessions,” Vanney told reporters on Thursday. “He’s gotten enough under his belt, and his fitness level is good, so now it’s just getting him back into match fitness.”

Having Hernandez back will be a big boost for the LA team, considering how much they have struggled early in the 2023 MLS season. Galaxy is winless in their first five games, a run that includes two losses. They also only scored three goals while conceding six.

Last season was Chicharito’s best one since he arrived in MLS. The 34-year-old player scored 18 goals and added two assists while helping LA Galaxy to return to the MLS Cup playoffs and reach Conference Semifinals.

By scoring more than 12 goals in 2022, Chicharito had his contract with Galaxy automatically extended for 2023. But he might end up staying even longer as the two sides are reportedly engaged in talks about a contract extension.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez took the blame for LA Galaxy’s 2-1 loss against Portland Timbers on Monday night despite managing to score a goal. Speaking with reporters after the game, Chicharito said that he should have done more and use his other chances better.

Galaxy had an opportunity to get in front early in the game, being awarded a penalty in the 12′ minute. Hernandez decided to take the responsibility, but his shot was saved by Timbers’ goalie Steve Clark.

The 32-year-old Mexican striker then had several other great chances, but couldn’t find the net before 88′ minute. Cristian Pavon got free in the penalty box after a great run from Gordon Wild, dishing the ball to Hernandez for his first career MLS goal.

By then, it was already too late for Galaxy as Timbers had 2-0 lead thanks to Jeremy Ebobisse and Sebastian Blanco.

“As a striker, we all know that sometimes that happens,” said Hernandez. “You can have ten chances and miss nine and score one, or there are some games you have one and you score it.”

“I told the lads that this one was on me,” he added.

Chicharito will have a chance to redeem himself on Saturday when Galaxy faces their cross-town rivals LAFC. LAFC previously managed to get a 3-3 draw against Houston Dynamo on Monday despite being two goals behind in the first half.

After a decade of participating in European soccer, Mexican star Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has decided to come back to North America to continue his professional career.

Chicharito, who joined La Liga side Sevilla last summer for an $8 million fee, is on the move yet again, joining the MLS’s LA Galaxy in a move that has sent shockwaves across the league.

The 31-year-old forward is one of Mexico’s most popular and recognizable talents, and his signing for a team in Los Angeles, a place with a huge Mexican-American community, will immediately make him a massive draw for the club.

In addition, he is set to face off with fellow Mexican superstar Carlos Vela, who stars for cross-town rival LAFC, on a regular basis.

Chicharito made the move to Europe from Chivas in 2010, signing for English giants Manchester United. He scored 37 goals for the team in 4 seasons, spending a year on loan at Real Madrid.

After that, he spent two year stints at Bayer Leverkusen and West Ham United, where he was a semi-regular fixture in the starting lineups at the German and English clubs.

Now, Chicharito will take stage as one of Major League Soccer’s most popular and recognizable faces and attempt to left the hole left behind in the LA Galaxy squad after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure.

MLS teams are not giving up on the attempts to bring Mexican star forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez to the U.S. The latest club to make an attempt is LA Galaxy, who are reportedly preparing an offer for the 31-year-old.

ESPN Deportes’ Herculez Gomez reports that Galaxy is willing to offer $10 million to Sevilla in order to lure Hernandez from Spain. The club is focused on getting a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the offseason, and consider Chicharito to be the perfect candidate.

Galaxy’s general manager Dennis te Kloese was recently asked about Chicarito’s possible arrival to the team, and while he didn’t deny the news, he did say that such move would be a challenge to pull off.

“He went from West Ham to Sevilla, and he’s been there for four months only. That makes it a little bit hard for both player and club. I think that’s going to be a challenge,” said te Kloese on Wednesday.

Javier Hernandez was previously linked with LAFC and expansion side Austin FC in the past, but neither move came to fruition. However, Hernandez admitted he is interested in coming to MLS in the future and might be even more open to the idea now, as he struggles to carve his place in Sevilla’s starting lineup.

Chicharito made nine appearances in La Liga this season, but only started four games and managed to score one goal. He played four matches in Europa League, adding two goals.

Austin FC is still a year and a half away from playing their first game in MLS, but the team owner Anthony Precourt is already having big plans for this franchise. Speaking on Austin’s Soccer Pod on Wednesday, Precourt said that Mexico’s star forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is a type of player he would want on his team.

“I’d be as excited as anyone,” – said Precourt. “That’s the type of player we’ll target, and we’ll give our best pitch. I think he’s got a year left on his contract at West Ham and I think there’s other clubs that are rumored to be looking at him in MLS. We’ll certainly be active in trying to recruit him in the years to come.”

Austin FC will play their inaugural season in MLS in 2021, and it looks like they might do so in front of full stands. The team recently made the season ticket deposits available for public and set the MLS record with more than 30,000 pledges.

Hernandez received advances from MLS in the past as well but insisted on staying in Europe for the time being. He played the previous two years in English Premier League, where he appeared in 53 games for West Ham and managed to score 15 goals.
