Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle with Eintracht Frankfurt over a loan deal for midfielder Donny van de Beek, sources revealed to ESPN. The Dutch midfielder is set to join Frankfurt in January until the end of the season.

While van de Beek has struggled to get game time over the past few seasons, with the current campaign proving no different, he may be required by United for their clash with Liverpool on Sunday night. Captain Bruno Fernandes will not be available due to a suspension while midfielders Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Mason Mount remain unavailable through injury.

Van de Beek was made available for transfer or loan during the summer as it became clear that he did not form a part of the plans of Man United manager Erik ten Hag. The midfielder has only made two appearances this season. Frankfurt are expected to pay a loan fee for the player, with an option for a permanent move included in the loan agreement.

Manchester United central midfielder Donny van de Beek will be sidelined for the remainder of the season, the manager Erik ten Hag confirmed. This comes after the Dutch national picked up a knee injury during his team’s 3-0 victory in the Premier League against Bournemouth on January 3.

“It is his knee,” ten Hag confirmed when asked about van de Beek’s injury at a press conference on Friday. “In the long term, it is looking really good, he will be back for the start of preseason. The rest of the season he is out. It is terrible when you are in the middle of the season and you get a bad tackle, bad injury — it is always really disappointing, and thoughts, feelings are with the player.”

Van de Beek arrived at Man Utd from Ajax for a fee of £40 million in 2020. Since his arrival at Old Trafford, the 25-year-old player has struggled to get regular minutes under managers Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, and now Ten Hag.

While van de Beek may be out, the Red Devils are set to increase their squad depth up front by signing striker Wout Weghorst on loan for the remainder of the season.

Manchester United central midfielder Donny van de Beek left his team’s 3-0 victory over Bournemouth early on Tuesday night after picking up an injury. The Dutch player had to be substituted before the half-time break after being on the receiving end of a hard tackle by Marcos Senesi.

“It’s difficult to say, we have to wait 24 hours before we can give a good diagnosis,” manager Erik ten Hag confirmed during a news conference on Tuesday. “It is [a concern]. I can’t say in this moment [what the injury is]. You have to wait 24 hours, but it doesn’t look good.”

Van de Beek’s injury is one significant setback in what was otherwise a joyous night at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils winning their sixth game in a row in all competitions. It seems like Manchester United decided to do some shopping after their embarrassing 3-1 home defeat to their cross-town rivals Manchester City in League Cup on Tuesday. According to multiple sources, United is considering making a move for the highly-regarded Ajax’s midfielder Donny Van de Beek.

ESPNFC reports that Man Utd’s boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is pushing for the move to happen in January, wanting reinforcement for the second part of the season. The club previously gave Solskjaer the green light to bring in new players but made it clear they won’t be reckless with paying transfer fees as they did in the past.

Van de Beek has been having a great season with Ajax so far, scoring six goals and adding four assists in Eredivisie. While the Dutch powerhouse is reluctant to see him go, the fact that they didn’t manage to advance past the group stage in Champions League might force them to listen to offers for their best players. Van de Beek could reportedly be lured from the Netherlands with an offer worth around $65 million.

Manchester United has their eyes set on several other targets, including another Ajax player, Hakim Ziyech. But since the club has the more pressing need in midfield, Ziyech as a winger isn’t their main priority. Football experts agree that the probable price of the 22-year-old midfielder will be somewhere around $66 million, which is a good price as the club will be paying almost $100 million less than the price of Paul Pogba.
