The Dallas Cowboys are turning to one of the former franchise stars to bolster depth in the running back position. According to multiple reports, the Cowboys will reunite with Ezekiel Elliott, who agreed to a one-year deal with the franchise over the weekend.

Reportedly, Elliott’s deal with the Cowboys will max out at $3 million and will become official once the veteran passes his physical.

Elliott returning to the Cowboys doesn’t come as a surprise, considering that the franchise’s executive vice president, Stephen Jones, previously hinted that the team is looking into a reunion.

“Well, Zeke, as we all know, is one of our favorites,” said Jones last week. “He’s laid it on the line for this franchise. He’s the ultimate competitor. I mean, he’s a guy that we obviously think a lot of.”

Ezekiel Elliott entered the league as the Cowboys’ fourth overall selection in 2016 and quickly established himself as one of the best backs in the league. He received a First-Team All-Pro selection in his rookie year after rushing for a league-leading 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns while making the Pro Bowl three times in his first four years in the league.

However, Elliott’s productivity dipped in the following seasons as he struggled to be a force in the backfield as he once was. This, alongside his big contract, prompted the Cowboys to release him at the end of the 2022 campaign. Elliott spent the 2023 season with the New England Patriots, rushing for 642 yards and three touchdowns in 17 games, including five starts.

The Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is not expected to receive a contract extension, sources familiar with the matter claimed to ESPN. While previous reports suggested that McCarthy would stay on with the team, he is now expected to continue coaching next year on an expiring contract, leaving his future unclear.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones previously announced that McCarthy would remain with the team in 2024. While the Cowboys suffered a disappointing playoff wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers, Jones praised McCarthy’s strong regular-season record with the team while also emphasizing the coach’s “demonstrated postseason success” that came with none other than the Packers.

The Cowboys’ loss to the Packers was a disappointing one, especially given that the Cowboys proved stronger during the regular season, winning the NFC East at 12-5. The Cowboys are now without a Superbowl win for 28 seasons.

The Dallas Cowboys are sticking with head coach Mike McCarthy despite a disappointing playoff exit, according to multiple reports. After going 12-5 in the regular season and winning the NFC East, the Cowboys flamed out in the Wild Card round with a 32-48 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Following another postseason failure, there was chatter that team owner Jerry Jones might consider firing McCarthy and perhaps replacing him with Bill Belichick. But it turns out that McCarthy will get another chance and at least see out his contract that runs through the 2024 season.

McCarthy was hired as the Cowboys’ head coach in 2020, replacing Jason Garrett. In his first season in charge, McCarthy went 6-10 but followed that up with three straight 12-win seasons. However, he has yet to make a deep postseason run with the franchise, having only one playoff win in four years.

Despite the lack of success in the postseason, McCarthy recently received support from Cowboys’ players, including star quarterback Dak Prescott.

“I’ve had the season that I’ve had because of him,” Prescott said when asked about rumors surrounding McCarthy’s future in Dallas. “This team has had the success that they’ve had because of him. I understand it’s about winning the Super Bowl. That’s the standard of this league and (darn) sure the standard of this place. I get it, but add me to the list, in that case.”

The Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is set to miss the rest of the season after a recurring neck injury. This ongoing health issue has also brought his career into question.

“He’s an integral part of that defense out there,” Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said of the linebacker. “We just wish him well, and just the nature of his potential injury here causes me to really think longer term and beyond what it means for next week or beyond what it means for next month. It has everything to do with what’s best in his interest.”

After jamming his neck during October 8’s 42-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Vander Esch was eligible to return from injured reserve this week, however, his pain persisted. His neck issues began in 2018 before he was drafted by the Cowboys, and in 2019, he underwent a fusion procedure after missing seven of the final nine games of the season.

The Dallas Cowboys dipped in the free agent market in attempts to replace injured linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. According to Michael Gehlken of Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are set to sign veteran LB Rashaan Evans to their practice squad.

Gehlken reported that Evans had a workout with the Cowboys on Wednesday and only needs to pass his physical for the move to be official.

Vander Esch got hurt in Sunday’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers and was placed on Injured Reserve with a neck injury designation. The 27-year-old player will miss at least four weeks as a result, but the Cowboys are reportedly optimistic that they will have him back on the field this season.

Rashaan Evans was a starter with the Atlanta Falcons in 2022, playing all 17 games. He contributed with a career-high 159 tackles to go with 2.0 sacks and four pass deflections. However, the Falcons opted against keeping him, and he spent the start of the 2023 season on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad.

Evans was a first-round pick by the Tennessee Titans back in 2018. In his five years as a pro, the Alabama product has 476 tackles. 5.0 sacks, 12 pass deflections, two interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

The Dallas Cowboys have decided to activate the fifth-year option for wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, keeping him in Dallas for the 2024 season. The Cowboys made the decision on Thursday, just two weeks before a decision had to be made.

Lamb, the team’s first-round pick in 2020, will earn a salary of $17.99 million in 2024. After being selected for the Pro Bowl, his option salary has become higher than his previous four seasons due to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Last season proved to be a standout season for Lamb, achieving career highs in receptions (107), yards (1,359), and touchdowns (9). This was Lamb’s first season as the Cowboys’ lead receiver following the trade of Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns.

During the first three seasons of his career, Lamb proved himself as a key Cowboys player, attaining the most receptions in the first three years of a career in Cowboys’ history with 260. He also reached 10 100-yard receiving games, trailing only Hall of Famer Bob Hayes (13) for the most in the first three seasons of any Cowboys player’s career.

The Dallas Cowboys have acquired Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts as part of a trade that sees the team’s fifth-round draft pick go to Indianapolis. This draft pick was acquired by the Cowboys in a trade last week.

Gilmore, who is entering the final year of his contract with a base salary of $7.9 million, started 16 games for the Cowboys last season, making two interceptions including one again the Cowboys. The cornerback is believed to have entered a two-year deal with the Cowboys worth $11 million.

A Pro-Bowler with the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and New England Patriots, Gilmore was named 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, making a league-leading six interceptions and 20 pass deflections for the Patriots. Upon arriving in Dallas, he is expected to be paired alongside Trevon Diggs, who made the Pro Bowl the past two seasons. This would result in one of the highest-profile cornerback pairings that the Cowboys have had in recent years.

The Dallas Cowboys believe that they have their franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott. But that apparently isn’t stopping them from considering other options.

Sports Illustrated’s Mike Fisher recently reported that the Cowboys are taking a closer look at the QB class that will be available in the 2023 NFL Draft. The franchise is reportedly particularly “intrigued” by Ohio State’s signal caller C.J. Stroud, who is predicted to be selected in the top 10 this year.

The evaluations about Stroud are all over the place, but many analysts view him as one of the three best quarterbacks in the upcoming draft. In two years as Ohio’s starter, the 21-year-old player completed 69.3 percent of his passes, throwing for 7,775 yards, 81 touchdowns, and only 12 picks. He is considered a pocket passer that also possesses great mobility, size, instincts, and arm strength.

While the Cowboys may have some degree of interest in C.J. Stroud, it is hard to see them actually making this move. The biggest obstacle is their draft position, as they own the No. 26 pick and would have to pay a steep price to move up to get Stroud. Also, they would have to figure out what to do with Prescott and his massive contract.

Prescott is set to earn $31 million in 2023 and has a cap hit of $49 million, meaning the cost to move away from him would not make sense for the Cowboys. They have a potential out after the 2023 season, but it would cost them close to $40 million as well.

Barring some unforeseen circumstances, like Stroud sliding on draft night, it is most likely that the Cowboys will stick with Prescott. The franchise’s path forward is to try and win with the 29-year-old while giving him a new contract that would give them some cap relief in upcoming years.

The Dallas Cowboys answered the question about whether they are legitimate Super Bowl contenders on Monday Night. In a dominant performance, America’s team beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 to set up a Divisional Round playoff meeting with the San Francisco 49ers.

Both teams started the game sluggish, combining for four straight punts before Dallas went 80 yards down the field to break the deadlock. This opened the floodgates, as the Cowboys were unstoppable from that point on.

Dallas was 18-0 at the half and up 24-0 to start the third quarter, with Tampa Bay unable to get their offense going. The Bucs only managed to get on the scoreboard late in the third and added another meaningless touchdown just before the two-minute warning to ease the blow.

The star of the show was the Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott, who completed 25 passes out of 33 attempted while throwing for 305 yards and four touchdowns. Prescott also added one touchdown on the ground, being responsible for all of Dallas’ points in the game.

On the other hand, veteran Tom Brady struggled for the better part of the game. The Bucs’ QB completed just above 50 percent of his passes while throwing for 351 yards and two TDs. He also threw one red zone interception.

The Cowboys now travel to Levi’s Stadium on Sunday to take on the 49ers and their standout rookie QB Brock Purdy. The Bucs head to the offseason with question marks about Brady’s future and the direction of the franchise.
