It will be a while before we see UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor back in the octagon. The UFC President Dana White recently told the media that McGregor wouldn’t fight for at least six more months.

McGregor has been out since July 2021, when he broke his leg in a fight against Dustin Poirier. And while the 34-year-old champion has fully recovered since then and is in fight shape, other circumstances are preventing him from returning to UFC.

According to White, the delay is a result of McGregor not being part of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) testing pool. He is required to be in the USADA program for at least six months before being able to fight in UFC.

After White’s announcement, McGregor went on Twitter to tell everyone he’s “feeling crazy confident.” He also promised he’ll have “multiple fights” before the remake of the action flick Road House, in which McGregor plays one of the roles, hits the theaters. The movie is currently set to be released at some point in 2023.

Conor McGregor claimed he was retired from MMA multiple times in the past several years but would quickly change his mind. His last two fights came in 2021, both losses to Poirier. McGregor is currently on a 22-6 record.

Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor developed into one of the biggest rivalries in the UFC in recent years. But this didn’t stop Poirier from offering praise to McGregor in a recent chat with the Valuetainment YouTube channel.

Speaking about McGregor during the interview, Poirier called the Irish fighter a “special individual” and hailed him as the “biggest puncher” he came across in the octagon.

“Conor McGregor [is the biggest hitter I’ve faced], no doubt about it,” Poirier said. “As the biggest puncher I’ve fought? Yeah, he’s a special individual for sure.”

Check out the full interview below.

Poirier and McGregor have faced each other in octagon three times so far. The first time the duo fought was in 2014 at UFC 178 when McGregor won via TKO in the opening round of the bout. The rematch was staged in January this year at UFC 257 and saw Poirier return the favor in the second round.

The most recent Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor fight took place back in July at the UFC 264. Poirier took the win via technical knockout after McGregor broke his leg during a kick in the first round.

McGregor is currently recovering from the injury, and it is unclear when he might return. Poirier, on the other hand, will face Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 in the UFC lightweight title bout.

Conor McGregor’s return to UFC is official. The former UFC champ told ESPN on Thursday that he officially signed a deal to fight Dustin Poirier on January 23rd.

The fight will mark the end of McGregor’s retirement, which he announced back in June. His last fight in UFC came in early 2020 when he defeated Donald Cerrone via TKO.

Poirier inked his deal last week, so there is nothing standing in the way of what promises to be an exciting matchup.

According to ESPN, the location hasn’t been finalized yet, but UFC’s president Dana White previously said that the organization’s “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi remains their preferred option. The weight limit for the fighters was set at 155 pounds.

Conor McGregor has a 22-4 MMA record, with his most recent loss coming against Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018.

Interestingly, Dustin Poirier, who has a 26-6 record, also has Nurmagomedov as the last opponent that defeated him. His most recent fight took place in June when he got the win against Dan Hooker via unanimous decision.

It didn’t take long for Conor McGregor to go back on his UFC retirement. The former featherweight and lightweight champion went on social media on Thursday to confirm that he accepted UFC’s offer to fight Dustin Poirier.

The news about a potential McGregor vs. Poirier fight started circling a few weeks ago when UFC president Dana White told the media that the organization made a contract offer to both fighters. At the time, Poirier said he would accept the bout while McGregor was reluctant to sign on and instead proposed a charity exhibition event.

McGregor, who announced his retirement from MMA in May, now changed his opinion and is open to fighting under the condition that it happens this year.

“Hello Dusti! I accepted the UFC offer to fight you, but told them it must happen in 2020,” McGregor wrote on Twitter while listing the dates that would work for him including November 21st and December 12th, which are both dates that Poirier prefers.

McGregor also added that he will make a donation of $500K to Poirier’s The Good Fight Foundation.

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier had their last fight in September 2014 at UFC 178 that ended with McGregor’s win via TKO in the first round. Since then, McGregor compiled a 6-2 record while Poirier is at 10-2.

Retired UFC star Conor McGregor appears to be ready for his second boxing match. After facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2017, McGregor will now apparently enter the ring with another boxing legend, Manny Pacquiao.

McGregor announced the news on his social media, saying that the fight will take place “in the Middle East.”

The plans for the fight were later confirmed by McGregor’s manager Audie Attar, who told ESPN that the two camps are having active discussions. However, Attar added that the deal hadn’t been finalized yet.

The news comes after UFC President Dana White recently told SportsCenter that UFC and Conor McGregor are working on “some fun stuff” together for the beginning of 2021. UFC co-promoted McGregor’s fight vs. Mayweather, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they are on board to do the same with Pacquiao bout.

McGregor, who announced that he is retiring from mixed martial art earlier this year, is 0-1 as a professional boxer. Pacquiao, on the other hand, has a 62-7 record with two draws.

Don’t expect former UFC champion Conor McGregor to return to the octagon anytime soon. According to UFC’s president Dana White, McGregor will not fight in 2020.

McGregor announced his retirement from UFC earlier this year but was linked with several high-profile fights regardless. And although it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Irish fighter un-retire, as he did several times before, White “guarantees” that won’t happen this year.

“This year, he is retired,” said White during his appearance on My Mom’s Basement podcast. “He doesn’t have a fight this year, and he won’t have a fight this year. Conor McGregor will not fight in 2020.”

“I guarantee he will not fight in 2020,” he added.

Despite being the face of the sport at one point, Conor McGregor only had two fights since winning the UFC Lightweight Championship against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in late 2016.

Almost two years after winning the belt, McGregor faced Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 and lost the fight via submission. The 32-year-old champion then faced Donald Cerrone in January this year at UFC 246 and won the fight by technical knockout.

After the Cerrone fight, McGregor proclaimed that he wants to fight at least two more times in 2020. Still, break due to coronavirus pandemic caused him to change his mind, and he announced in early June that he’s walking away from MMA.

One of UFC’s biggest stars, Conor McGregor has recently announced his retirement from mixed martial arts saying that he wishes to focus on pursuing other ventures. But, if you ask Khabib Nurmagomedov, the man who defeated the Irishman for the UFC lightweight title back in October, McGregor’s retirement won’t last long.

Nurmagomedov spoke with reporters on Tuesday about the matter saying that McGregor “couldn’t reach a deal with the UFC, and (his retirement) is so they feel they’ve lost him and they could lose money.”

“I don’t think he’s finished,” -Nurmagomedov added. “Conor acts like a jealous wife who says “I will leave” all the time but then comes back.”

UFC’s boss Dana White also agrees that McGregor isn’t done with mixed martial arts.

“No,” – said White when asked if McGregor’s retirement is for real. “I think that there’s some things that Conor wants and I think that Conor wants to get together face to face, he and I, and we probably will in the next couple of weeks and we’ll get this thing figured out.”

You can’t blame Nurmagomedov and White for not buying Conor McGregor’s retirement since it isn’t the first one. McGregor also retired from UFC in April 2016, but ended up changing his decision just two days later.

After putting up a good performance against Floyd Mayweather and earning tons of money, Conor McGregor has sparked interest from other boxers as well. Now, Oscar De La Hoya said that he would be prepared to get out of the retirement to fight McGregor.

I know I can take out Conor McGregor in two rounds. I’ll come back for that fight.” – said De La Hoya. “Two rounds. Just one more [fight]. I’m calling him out. Two rounds, that’s all I need. That’s all I’m going to say. You heard it on Golden Boy Radio. Two rounds, that’s all I need.

Oscar De La Hoya retired in 2009 after 16 years of professional career. During that time, he won ten world titles in six different weight classes while also achieving lineal championships in three weight classes. During his amateur boxing career, De La Hoya won a lightweight gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

It would be certainly interesting to see 44-year old De La Hoya back in the ring. He teased about coming from the retirement for a few times now, but that never came to fruition. His physical condition obviously wouldn’t be an issue since De La Hoya said he has been training.

You know I’m competitive. I still have it in me.” – De La Hoya explains. “I’ve been secretly training, secretly training. I’m faster than ever and stronger than ever.

Now it remains to be seen if Conor McGregor would be up for this challenge. During the promotion of his documentary Conor McGregor: Notorious, McGregor said that he seeks the opportunity to fight in UFC for the interim lightweight belt, but that there are many boxing opponents he would consider. With Oscar De La Hoya’s interest in fighting him, we can safely say that McGregor isn’t lacking business offers for the future.

Lots of people were wondering what Conor McGregor will do next. Now, we might have some answers. McGregor is currently promoting his documentary Conor McGregor: Notorious, and Ireland’s Entertainment jumped on the chance to ask him about his plans for the future.

I’ve got everyone clawing at me, trying to get at me, and that’s from multiple sports, multiple organizations, multiple everything,” – McGregor said. “It’s been like that for a long, long time, I feel, so it’s just another day for me. I know there are many contenders in the UFC. There are many boxing contenders as well. What interests me is certainly a UFC bout, certainly a defense of my lightweight title. There is a fighter with the interim lightweight belt. I feel that will be next. We’ll see how negotiations go.

The “fighter” McGregor refers to is UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson, who is currently on a 10 win streak and got the title in the fight against Kevin Lee. If negotiations with Ferguson fail, McGregor isn’t worried, since he has numerous other opportunities.

The Diaz trilogy is also there,” – McGregor said. “I can defend my belt against Nate. Maybe we can persuade one of these boxing opponents to step into the Octagon, or there’s also boxing bouts as well. So, there’s so many options. I feel to legitimize the belt — there’s an interim champion, I’m the unified champion — I feel that will be next. We are currently in contract negotiations, and we’ll see where it goes.

McGregor had his last UFC fight in November of 2016 when he defeated Eddie Alvarez. With the win against Alvarez, McGregor became the only fighter in UFC history to simultaneously hold titles from two divisions. His only fight in 2017 was his boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather in August when he lost by TKO in the 10th round.
