It turns out that the New England Patriots’ decision to release veteran quarterback Cam Newton and install rookie Mac Jones as a starter for the 2021 NFL season did not just shock the majority of the football world. The move also came as a surprise for Newton himself.

In a recent video published on his YouTube channel, Newton spoke for the first time about being released by New England. And he started by saying that this isn’t the development he was expecting.

“Did it catch me by surprise being released? Absolutely,” revealed Newton.

Newton then went on to explain that he wouldn’t have an issue serving as Jones’ backup if asked to do so by the Pats. But they never asked him, and the former NFL MVP believes he knows why.

“But listen, the truth of the matter is this: He would have been uncomfortable,” Newton explained.

The 32-year-old star also spoke about his competition with Jones during the training camp and the preseason. Newton said that he didn’t get an equal number of reps like the rookie, which made him suspect that New England had other plans for him.

“When I look back at it, I was probably getting two reps to his 10 reps. And that’s why it was starting to make sense,” he added.

Finally, Newton said that he thinks the reason why he was released by the Patriots is that he “was going to be a distraction, without being a starter.”

Cam Newton still remains a free agent, but he insisted in the video that he isn’t retiring from football. His best chance to make an NFL team in the future looks to be accepting a backup role, but it remains to be seen whether he will be willing to do so at this point of his career.

Cam Newton is expected to return to the New England Patriots for the 2021 NFL season. According to multiple reports, Newton and the Pats are currently finalizing a new one-year deal.

Newton is reportedly expected to get a $14 million salary in 2021. He earned $1.05 million last season, signing a veteran’s minimum deal with New England in free agency.

Newton started 15 games for the Patriots in 2020, leading the team to a 7-8 record. He delivered some eye-catching performances and rushed for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The issue, however, was that Newton was wildly inconsistent in the passing game. Despite completing 65.8 percent of his passes, he only managed to throw for 2,657 yards and had more picks than TDs (8-10).

After the season ended, Newton’s future with the organization was unclear, although the 31-year-old player was hopeful that he would remain in New England.

“I’m getting tired of changing, bro,” Newton told the I Am Athlete podcast. “I’m getting to a point in my career where I know way more than I knew last year.”

Before joining the Pats, Cam Newton spent nine years with the Carolina Panthers. He won the NFL MVP Award in 2015 and led the franchise to a Super Bowl 50 appearance.

The Panthers released Newton last offseason after he struggled with injuries and only played two games in 2019.

The pairing of head coach Ron Rivera and quarterback Cam Newton brought the Carolina Panthers its first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. But could this combination work in Washington?

Well, it appears that Rivera, now the coach of the Washington Football Team, wouldn’t mind giving it a try.

Speaking with reports during a recent video call, Rivera said that his team is looking into all options at the quarterback position and that even someone like Newton could be available.

“We’re exploring all of our options. Nothing is off the table,” said Rivera when asked about Newton. “As we go through this, we’re going to do what we believe is best for us.”

Washington has an exciting squad that managed to make it to the playoffs this season, Rivera’s first at the helm. However, the organization is facing a lot of uncertainty at the QB position.

While veteran Alex Smith had a great return to action after recovering from a career-threatening injury, it is unclear whether he is willing to play anymore. The other two QBs on Washington’s roster, Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke, are both set to become free agents in March and are not exactly considered starting-level players.

Cam Newton seems like an upgrade compared to the bunch, but his reputation isn’t what it used to be.

After struggling with injuries in recent seasons, he has been relatively healthy in 2020 while playing for the New England Patriots. But Newton failed to accompany this with productivity, struggling mightily in the passing game.

Newton finished the season with only 2,657 passing yards and eight touchdowns while throwing for 10 interceptions. The Pats were 7-8 with him as a starter.

After a disappointing 2020 campaign with the New England Patriots, quarterback Cam Newton is well aware that he’ll have a hard time getting a starting job next season. But despite this, he isn’t ready to accept the backup role just yet.

Speaking on sports radio WEEI on Monday, Newton was at one point asked whether he would be willing to be a second-string in 2021.

“Honestly, it’s too early to tell,” responded Newton. “That’s as honest as I can be.”

Newton explained that he “absolutely” has the talent to be a starter but acknowledged that he didn’t show much this past season.

“I just really need some time for myself to really reevaluate this whole situation,” he added.

After sitting out most of 2019 with a foot injury and being released by the Carolina Panthers at the end of the season, Newton accepted the league’s minimum to play with the Patriots. The 31-year-old star hoped that a good run might help him rebuild his reputation and get him a long term deal in 2021.

However, Newton struggled for the better part of the year and finished the season with only 2,657 passing yards and eight passing touchdowns while throwing 10 interceptions. He did perform better in the running game, managing to rush for 592 yards and 12 TDs, but this didn’t help prevent a 6-8 record as a starter.

Newton might not be open to being a backup, but that will be his reality if he doesn’t manage to secure a stay in New England. There are not many open starting jobs in the league at the moment, and the teams that do have an opening would rather take a shot with a young signal-caller than play an injury-prone veteran.

It’s very rare to see division rivals getting involved in trades, but that’s what happened this week when the Miami Dolphins struck a deal with the New England Patriots, sending them wide receiver Isaiah Ford in return for a 7th-round pick in the 2022 draft.

The Patriots and their quarterback Cam Newton are in dire need of more weapons and just wide receivers in general. Their WR corps has been decimated by injury recently. Both Julian Edelman and Quincy Adeboyejo are on injured reserved currently.

New England also had another key receiver, Marquise Lee, opt out of the 2020 season.

Ford was a seventh-round pick in the 2017 draft. He has mostly been on the Dolphins practice squad and has only played in 15 games over the last two seasons.

He has 428 receiving yards on 41 passes caught and no touchdowns. However, he is still only 24 years old and could be a good role player for the Patriots, who need all the help they can get on offense currently.

Ford played in the Dolphins’ Week 1 loss to the Patriots, catching two balls for a total of 15 yards.

Miami is currently in second place in the AFC East with a 4-3 record while the Patriots are right behind them with a 2-5 record. They are scheduled to face off again on December 20.

Things are not looking good for New England Patriots at this point. The Pats suffered another loss on Sunday, getting beaten 24-21 by Buffalo Bills, and are now riding a four-game losing streak.

Both New England and Buffalo entered the contest with a point to prove, considering their disappointing performances in the past several weeks. But the game itself didn’t offer much excitement until the fourth quarter.

With both teams standing at 14, Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen put together a quick drive at the beginning of the final period and walked into the endzone to give his team a lead.

It didn’t take long for Pats to respond in the same way. QB Cam Newton led New Englands’ offense 72 yards down the field and also got the walk-in TD to tie the game.

On the following possession, Bills had to settle for a field goal, giving New England enough time to execute a game-winning TD drive or set up a game-tying field goal. And they almost did.

With 0:37 remaining on the clock, Pats had a 2nd&10 on Buffalo’s 20 and at least a close FG attempt in the bag. Newton saw an opportunity to buy some more yards with his legs and maybe get a win, so he naturally went for it.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, Bill’s defensive tackle Justin Zimmer followed the play and managed to kick the ball from Newton’s hands from behind. Safety Dean Marlowe recovered the fumble and secured an important win for his team.

With this loss, the New England Patriots are now third in AFC East with a 2-5 record. Bills are first with 6-2.

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton, who was signed to replace franchise legend Tom Brady at the position over the summer, had a tough game in a 33-6 loss against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Newton completed only 9 of 15 passes for 98 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions against a San Francisco defense that made him look uncomfortable all day.

After the game, Newton acknowledged on a local radio show that he was embarrassed about how he played.

Newton, who got off to a slow start in the season’s first three games before testing positive for COVID-19 and missing the team’s matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, hasn’t looked much better since returning on October 18th.

While he threw for 157 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions last weekend against the Broncos, yesterday’s performance was bad enough that coach Bill Belichick replaced Newton in the fourth quarter with backup Jarrett Stidham.

The former MVP and Panthers standout has thrown for just 696 yards so far this season in 5 games with only 2 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

Newton, who remains the starter, will look to get things back on track this weekend in a tough matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton rejoined the team on Thursday after officially being removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Newton has been on the COVID-19 list since he tested positive for the virus on October 3. If all goes well at practice, Newton is expected to start on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

The Patriots had three days off before returning to their facility on Wednesday. However, they are still taking precautions after several players tested positive for the coronavirus and are bringing players back in smaller groups to focus on strength and conditioning work.

Another star player who tested positive for the coronavirus, cornerback Stephon Gilmore, announced on his Instagram that he is getting very close to returning to the team as well.

The Patriots lost the one game they played without Newton leading the offense to the Kansas City Chiefs 26-10 with veteran backup quarterback Brian Hoyer starting.

New England was supposed to play the Broncos last Monday, but the game was postponed after defensive tackle Byron Cowart tested positive for COVID-19 on October 9.

If no more positive tests arise, the teams will finally meet on Sunday.

The New England Patriots star quarterback Cam Newton has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been placed on the COVID injured reserve list.

The Patriots were scheduled to play the reigning NFL champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, but the game will be rescheduled to ensure the safety of all players and staff.

According to the Patriots, no one else from the team has tested positive for the coronavirus as of yet. The team has been performing mass testing and all of the players and personnel that were in contact with Newton most recently will continue to receive special attention, even though there have been no new positive cases reported.

Even if the game is effectively rescheduled and played this week, no one really knows how many weeks the Patriots will be without their starting quarterback. It is expected that journeyman veteran Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback until Newton is ready to come back.

The only other quarterback that the Patriots have on the roster is rookie Jarrett Stidham, who has been listed as inactive for all three weeks of the season.

Newton, a former league MVP, was signed in the offseason for very little money and has been playing incredibly well, leading the Patriots to a 2-1 start.

New England Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick rarely gives out praise, but recently made an exception in case of team’s new quarterback Cam Newton. And that’s before he even saw him suit up for Pats in a regular-season game.

During his recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Belichick spoke highly of Newton and said that he was impressed with how 2015’s NFL MVP handled learning a new offense.

“Being with him every day, he’s an extremely hard-working player. First guy in, last one out type of guy,” said Belichick. “He’s really studied hard and has spent a lot of extra time trying to learn our offense, our communication, our calls, nomenclature. I’ve been very impressed with that. He’s done a very good job of picking it up. He’s a very skilled athlete.”

While all of this is probably true, it is still surprising to see Belichick hand out compliments to his players, especially those who just arrived. Usually, not a man of many words, there is a possibility that he’s taking a different approach with Newton in order to make him feel welcomed and have him buy into the “Patriots Way.”

Cam Newton, who spent the previous nine years with the Carolina Panthers, signed a one-year minimum deal with New England in the offseason. Newton is expected to be the Pats’ starting QB in 2020, facing competition from inexperienced Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer.
