It is no secret that La Liga powerhouse Barcelona is having serious financial struggles. But despite this, the Catalan club isn’t willing to cash in on their best players.

Speaking on Saturday during a general assembly, club’s president Joan Laporta revealed that Barca rejected an offer of €100 million for Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

“We cannot improve sportingly if we do not do our homework economically,” Laporta said during his speech. “We have had the opportunity to sell Frenkie de Jong for €100 million, and we did not want to do it so as not to lose our ability to be competitive.”

It is unclear which club sent in the offer, but de Jong has had plenty of suitors in the past who would be willing to make such a hefty bid. He was the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia clubs, while Premier League’s Chelsea and Manchester United also have the 26-year-old on their radar. Man United reportedly even had a bid of €85 million accepted by Barca at one point, but the player wasn’t interested in leaving Spain.

Frenkie de Jong became a key player for Barcelona since arriving at Camp Nou in 2019 in a €75 million transfer from Ajax. He played a total of 190 games for the club and helped them win the La Liga title in 2022–23.

FC Barcelona has reached a verbal agreement to sign Inigo Martinez in the summer transfer window, multiple sources reported on Tuesday. While he has been tracked by Barca for years, Martinez is now being seriously tracked by Barcelona as he will be available for free at the end of the season. The Athletic Club defender’s move to Camp Nou will depend on Barca’s ability to reduce its wage bill.

In addition, the Catalan giants are also looking to sign Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who will be out of contract with the Premier League club in June. Despite being low-cost signings, Barcelona will need to improve its ongoing financial situation if they hope to pursue both signings.

La Liga president Javier Tebas stated that Barcelona will need to reduce its expenses by approximately €150 million in order to be able to register midfielder Gavi as a first-team player under his new contract.

La Liga president Javier Tebas revealed that he believes that it is now “practically impossible” for FC Barcelona to make any transfers this summer because of the club’s precarious financial situation.

While the club parted ways with the likes of Gerard Pique who retired, Memphis Depay who joined Atletico Madrid, and Hector Bellerin who left for Sporting Club, the team remains unlikely to perform any summer signings because of the Spanish league’s Financial Fair Play regulations.

“I already announced it, and [Barca] president [Joan] Laporta will phone me and be angry,” Tebas stated at the Business Football Summit. “t is practically impossible for Barcelona to sign players in the summer. Much will have to change because, if not, the institution will be in trouble. We haven’t let FC Barcelona sign players this winter, and next summer. They won’t be able to sign players.”

Barcelona has had long-standing issues with the league over its Financial Fair Play violations. Earlier this year, La Liga refused to allow the Catalan club to join other clubs in increasing their salary cap by 15%.

Joao Mendes de Assis Moreira, the son of FC Barcelona and Brazil legend Ronaldinho, has signed a permanent contract with Barceona’s under-19 team, the club announced.

In January, reports surfaced of the 18-year-old training with the Barca Juvenil A side, however, the club was yet to make a decision on whether to sign the Brazilian on a permanent basis.

Upon completing a successful trial with the club, Mendes signed a contract with the team alongside academy director Jose Ramon Alexanco on Thursday. According to sources, the player’s new contract will run until summer next year.

Mendes began his career at the age of 14 when he signed for the Brazilian club Cruzeiro. He decided to rescind his contract with the team last year, however, before making his way to Europe.

Capable of playing in a variety of attacking roles, the left-footed Mendes receives constant guidance from his uncle, Roberto de Assis Moreira, who also played an active role in Ronaldinho’s career.

Ronaldinho played for the Catalan club from 2003 until 2008, during which time he scored 94 goals in 207 appearances. He played a pivotal part in the club’s 2006 UEFA Champions League victory while also helping them to lift two La Liga trophies.

Midfielder Franck Kessie and center-back Andreas Christensen have been signed by FC Barcelona on free transfers, the club confirmed on Monday.

Arriving after becoming a free agent following the expiration of his contract with AC Milan, Kessie is expected to provide the Blaugranes with more options in the midfield, particularly with Frenkie de Jong’s future at the club being brought into question. The 25-year-old Ivorian will battle with the likes of Gavi, Nico Gonzalez, Pedri, and Sergio Busquets for a spot in the starting 11.

Set to be unveiled as a Barca player on Wednesday, Kessie has signed a contract that runs through 2026 and includes a €500 million release clause.

The 26-year-old Christensen arrives at the Spotify Camp Nou after his contract with Premier League club Chelsea lapsed last month. This move brings an end to the Danish defender’s 10-year tenure at Stamford Bridge, where he won the UEFA Champions League in 2021 as well as the Europa League in 2019.

Christensen is a welcome addition to the Blaugranes’ defense, where he joins the ranks of Gerard Pique, Eric Garcia, and Ronald Araujo, who recently signed a new long-term contract with Barcelona.

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri confirmed that striker Alvaro Morata will not be allowed to leave the club during the January transfer window, thereby shutting down any potential move to La Liga side Barcelona. This comes after the Catalan club reportedly made Morata a top transfer target last week, gearing up to make a bid for him once the transfer window opens.

Currently, Morata is on loan to Juventus from Atletico Madrid, however, the Italian club is unwilling to part ways with the player prematurely. Allegri confirmed this stance during a press conference on Wednesday, explaining: “He is not leaving this month. We had a face-to-face meeting and I told him: ‘You’re 100% staying.'”

While the Serie A club initially seemed willing to release Morata from his loan duties early, the club backtracked due to a shortage of players in Morata’s position.

Barcelona has gotten their transfer activities off to a productive start, securing the €55 million signing of Ferran Torres from Manchester City. Other transfer targets that Barca manager Xavi Hernandez has in his sights include Manchester United forward Edison Cavani, however, this move also seems unlikely with Red Devils’ coach Ralf Rangnick expressing his desire to keep Cavani at the club.

Brazilian veteran right-back Dani Alves could soon return to soccer, and if reports from UOL Esporte are true, he could do so in an FC Barcelona jersey.

Alves is currently a free agent after terminating his contract with Sao Paulo a couple of months ago. He was close to joining Fluminense in recent weeks but the talks with the Brazilian side have stalled after the opportunity to return to Nou Camp presented itself.

Reportedly, Barca would like to sign Alves in order to boost the competition on the right-back position, where they currently have USMNT’s Sergino Dest and Spaniard Sergi Roberto. It is believed that the club’s new manager Xavi also wouldn’t mind having his former teammate on the squad.

The move was previously hinted by Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta, who recently told the media that the club and Alves remain in touch.

“Dani is helping our club in many ways, he has also offered his help from a sporting point of view,” Laporta said.

The two sides are set to have talks about a potential move at some point this week with Alves being especially motivated to wrap them up successfully. The 38-year-old wants to make Brazil’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and thinks that playing with such a big club as Barca would significantly increase his chances to do so.

Alves played for Barcelona between 2008 and 2016 and made 391 appearances during his time in Spain. He helped the club win 23 trophies including six La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League honors.

The transfer windows are closed in England and Italy, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see some more blockbuster deals until the end of this month. According to Sport’s Lluis Miguelsanz, Paris Saint-Germain are preparing a $103 million bid for Barcelona’s midfielder Ivan Rakitic.

Rakitic, who finished as a runner-up with Croatia at 2018 World Cup, would reportedly prefer to stay in Barcelona but is willing to listen to the offer from France. PSG is hoping to sell the 30-year-old on the idea of playing in Paris by doubling his $9.2 million salary. La Liga giants, on the other hand, don’t have the financial flexibility to match that offer.

It is unclear whether Barcelona would consider the option of selling Ivan Rakitic, especially since he assumed a prominent role in their midfield after Andres Iniesta left the club. On the other hand, they might not have a choice if PSG decides to activate Rakitic’s buyout clause of $140 million.

One additional option to pull off this deal would be to include midfielder Adrien Rabiot in the agreement. Barcelona has shown a keen interest for the French international, who has one more year left on his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. Barca is ready to offer close to $60 million for Rabiot while giving him a salary of $11.5 million a year. PSG isn’t prepared to go that high and is willing to give the 23-year-old wage in the range of $9 million.

There is still a week left before the transfer windows in Spain and France close, so there is a significant chance that we could see at least one of these deals going through.

Barcelona continues to have a strong offseason on the transfer market. The La Liga giants announced on Friday that they reached an agreement to acquire Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal from Bayern Munich. The deal was confirmed by Bayern as well, with the club posting a tribute video on their social media.

On behalf of everyone at Bayern, I’d like to thank Arturo very much for three fantastic years,” – said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in a statement. “We won a lot of silverware in that time, and Arturo played a major role in those wins. He was a leader, also in the big game. We could always rely on him.”

Arturo Vidal joined Bayern Munich in 2015 from Juventus in a transfer worth around $46 million. He enjoyed a successful run with the club, winning three Bundesliga titles and scoring 22 goals during his time in Germany. Given the fact that Vidal’s contract is about to expire, Bayern was shopping the 31-year-old in the past weeks with the Inter Milan and Chelsea also being some of the contenders for his signature.

According to several Spanish media outlets, Barcelona paid close to $30 million for Vidal services. The club was in need of a midfielder reinforcement since both Andrea Iniesta, and Paulinho left the club after the last season. Some of the options were Paris Saint-Germain’s Adrien Rabiot and Ajax’ Frenkie de Jong, but Barca decided to go with more experience player in Vidal.
