AS Roma parted ways with manager Jose Mourinho on Tuesday. The move comes after a series of disappointing results, including a 3-1 loss to AC Milan over the weekend.

Seria A side swiftly replaced Mourinho, installing club legend Daniele De Rossi as the new manager until the remainder of the 2023-24 season.

Mourinho leaves Roma after spending two and a half seasons in Italy’s capital. During that time, he won the UEFA Europa Conference League, bringing the club its first trophy in 11 years. However, a poor run in Seria A season, which saw Roma drop to 9th in the standings, proved to be too much to ignore for club’s owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club, “Friedkins said in a statement. “We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavors.”

AS Roma will now hope that De Rossi, who played 616 games with the club between 2001 and 2019, could help improve the squad’s form. This will be De Rossi’s second managerial job after a short stint with Seria C side SPAL. He managed 17 games with SPAL, going 3-6-8 before being fired in February 2023.

Sevilla once again showed that they are unmatched in the UEFA Europa League. The La Liga side beat AS Roma on penalties on Wednesday night to claim its seventh Europa League trophy in club history.

Sevilla got the win after overcoming a 1-0 deficit in the regular time. Following scoreless extra time, the Spanish side was better in the penalty shootout, converting four penalty kicks, while Roma only scored once from the spot. 

The game between Sevilla and Roma was a clash of history in a way. Sevilla entered the game having never lost the Europa League finals. Roma was coached by Jose Mourinho, who never lost finals in European competition over the course of his career.

It looked like Mourinho would prevail as Paulo Dybala gave Roma the lead in the 36th minute. However, Sevilla managed to make it even in the second half thanks to an own goal by Gianluca Mancini in the 55th minute.

Both sides had their chances to end the game in regular time but failed to take advantage of them. The game went to extra time, during which teams were more focused on keeping their goal intact than on threatening the opponent.

Roma manager Jose Mourinho stated that he would seek legal advice after he received a red card during his team’s shock 2-1 loss in the Serie A to relegation-threatened Cremonese on Tuesday. This was Cremonese’s first win of the season.

Mourinho was shown a red card by referee Marco Piccinini at the start of the second half for dissent, thus marking his third suspension of the season. According to Mourinho, his outburst was due to his treatment by the fourth official.

Dutch international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is leaving Paris Saint-Germain after a disappointing 2021-22 season. Wijnaldum is reportedly heading to Italy, where he’ll join AS Roma on a year-long loan.

According to soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, Roma will pay half of Wijnaldum’s salary for 2022-23, which amounts to €5 million. The Seria A side will also have an option to make a move permanent for another €8 million next summer.

Georginio Wijnaldum is known for his time with Liverpool, where he was one of the key players for the team during the UEFA Champions League-winning campaign in 2018-19 and the Premier League-winning season the year after. After his contract with the Reds expired in the summer of 2021, WIjnaldum opted to sign for PSG.

Despite expecting a prominent role with Ligue 1 powerhouse, Wijnaldum found himself struggling to make the starting 11 once the 2021-22 season started. He made 31 appearances in the national competition but only started 18 games. The 31-year-old player finished the season with three goals and three assists in all competitions.

FC Dallas talented right-back Bryan Reynolds is expected to secure a transfer to Europe before the January transfer window closes. And, per ESPN, his next destination will be Seria A giants A.S. Roma.

Reynolds has been monitored by several European clubs in recent months, with Juventus, Club Brugge, and Ajax being among his suitors. Juve was close to acquiring Reynolds earlier this year but technical issues about the club’s non-EU player quota stalled the move.

This enabled Roma to swoop in at the last moment, and they are now leading the race for US youth international.

According to sources close to the situation, Roma already has an agreement in principle with FC Dallas and will pay around $10 million for Reynolds’ services. The 19-year-old player is expected to join the Italian club next week on a six-month loan before the move becomes permanent in the summer.

Serbia’s Aleksandar Kolarov ended his spell with AS Roma after three seasons, but the 34-year-old back is going to play in Seria A next season as well. Kolarov decided to join Inter Milan, signing a one-year deal with the club. 

According to reports from Italian media, Inter paid $1.77 million to Roma for Kolarov. The value of the deal could increase to $2.35 million if certain marks are met.

Inter confirmed the deal on their official social media on Tuesday. 

Kolarov is expected to provide additional depth to Inter Milan’s shaky left-back position. The current starter is ex-Manchester United star Ashley Young, while the club also has Henrique Dalbert as an option, considering the Brazilian returned on Guiseppe Meazza following the expiration of his loan stint with Fiorentina.
