Former Chelsea and Manchester United center midfielder Nemanja Matic is expected to join Serie A side AS Roma on a free transfer, according to numerous reports. This deal would see him be reunited with manager Jose Mourinho, whom he worked with during his tenures at both Chelsea and Manchester United.
Having arrived in the Premier League in 2014, the 33-year-old player decided to part ways with Manchester United at the end of the 2021-22 season, allowing his contract to lapse. He is expected to sign a one-year deal with Roma.
Mourinho’s decision to bring Matic to the Serie A club comes as no surprise as the Portuguese manager has been looking to reunite with Matic after their days together at Chelsea and Manchester United. The pair won the 2014/15 Premier League and English League Cup double at Chelsea, after which Mourinho lifted the 2016/17 Europa League title at Manchester United – the last piece of silverware that the Red Devils have won to date.
Following news of his impending departure from Manchester United, Matic became a transfer target for numerous European clubs, frequently being linked with Juventus before transfer talks broke down. According to reports, a reunification with Jose Mourinho was the deciding factor in Matic’s move to Roma.
