The Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback Kyler Murray is eligible to return from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list next week. But the Cardinals won’t activate Murray just yet as he is “weeks away” from playing, according to a recent report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Murray has been out since tearing his ACL back in December. While the 26-year-old player is considered to be progressing well in his rehab, the Cardinals are believed to be taking a cautious approach with their franchise quarterback.

Many believe that 2023 will be a “lost” season for the Cardinals due to Murray’s injury, the new coaching staff, and the fact that the team significantly rebuilt its roster. However, sources close to the organization say that Murray will still return to action once he is fully recovered.

Murray struggled in 2022, passing for 2,368 yards, 14 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 11 games. The Cardinals went 3-8 with him as their starting quarterback.

With Murray out to start the 2023, the Cardinals turned to veteran journeyman Joshua Dobbs as their starter. Dobbs proved to be a solid game manager for Arizona, failing to put up eye-catching numbers but being efficient and taking care of the football. The 28-year-old player is completing 72% of his passes and has thrown for 549 yards and two TDs without a single pick in the first three weeks.

The new Arizona Cardinals’ head coach Jonathan Gannon is holding his cards close to his chest ahead of the start of 2023.  Some would say even too close.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Gannon declined to reveal who will be the team’s starting quarterback for Week 1 game against the Washington Commanders. With last year’s starter Kyler Murray still out with a knee injury, the Cardinals’ quarterback room currently consists out of journeyman Joshua Dobbs and rookie Clayton Tune.

“Guys, I ain’t telling you anything,” Gannon responded to questions about whether Dobbs or Tune will start under center on Sunday.

Gannon previously described his refusal to name the starting QB as a “competitive advantage,” but said that Dobbs and Tune already know who will get to take the first snap.

Dobbs spent time with five different teams since being drafted in the fourth round of 2017 NFL Draft but only made two starts as a pro; both with the Tennessee Titans last season. The 28-year-old completed 40 passes out of 68 attempted in 2022, throwing for 411 yards, two touchdowns and two picks.

Tune doesn’t have pro experience but had more time to learn the playbook considering that Dobbs only joined the team in late August. The Cardinals drafted Tune out of Houston in the fifth round of this year’s draft. The 24-year-old played in all three of Arizona’s preseason games, completing 57.6% of his passes for 353 yards, one TD and one pick.

The Arizona Cardinals are cutting their losses with versatile defender Isaiah Simmons. The team announced on Thursday that they are trading Simmons to the New York Giants for a seventh-round selection in 2024.

Simmons, who was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, saw his fifth-year option declined by the Cardinals earlier this offseason. He is set to earn $1 million in base salary in the final year of his rookie deal.

Simmons was an intriguing prospect coming out of college due to his ability to play multiple positions on defense. While this was an asset during his time with Clemson, earning him ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors, it became a problem in the NFL.

In his first three years as a pro, Simmons was listed as a linebacker but also lined up at the defensive back positions. He failed to find consistency at either position, and his production suffered as a result. This is why he decided to switch to the safety position this offseason and exclusively play there moving forward.

Since the Cardinals are already stocked at the safety position, it made sense for them to move away from Simmons and get some salary cap relief alongside draft compensation. The Giants, on the other hand, take a low risk on a player that still has a big potential.

Arizona Cardinals’ veteran running back Marlon Mack tore his Achilles and will miss the entire 2023 NFL season as a result. The news was confirmed to reporters by the team’s head coach Jonathan Gannon on Wednesday.

Mack suffered the injury during Tuesday’s practice. It came less than a week after he signed with the Cardinals on a one-year deal. The 27-year-old player already came back from an Achilles tear once before.

Mack entered the NFL as the fourth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent the first five years of his career in Indy and had his best season in 2019 when he rushed for 1,091 yards and eight touchdowns.

The South Florida product spent the 2022 campaign with the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos. He had a total of 16 carries, all of which came with the Broncos, and rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinals signed Mack with the intention of adding depth to their running back corps. It is unclear whether the team will turn to the free agent market again or rely on undrafted rookie Emari Demercado and former practice squad back Ty’Son Williams.

The Arizona Cardinals made a decision on Friday to move on from All-Pro wideout DeAndre Hopkins. The move comes after the franchise tried and failed to trade the veteran wide receiver this offseason.

The Cardinals made the move official with an announcement posted on their social media.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Cardinals will take on a $22.6 million dead-money cap hit in 2023 as a result of releasing Hopkins. They will also clear around $7.4 million in salary cap space and avoid paying the player’s $19.45 million salary for this upcoming season, as he didn’t have any guaranteed money left on his deal.

Reportedly, the Cardinals tried to move DeAndre Hopkins for the better part of the offseason but found out that there was no market for him considering his huge deal. The teams were willing to engage in negotiations only if Hopkins would rework his contract and take a smaller salary, something that the player was unwilling to do.

Hopkins leaves the Cardinals after three underwhelming seasons in which he dealt with consistency, injuries, and suspensions. He played 35 games with the franchise during that period, catching 221 passes for 2,696 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Despite not being on a Pro Bowl level for the past couple of years, Hopkins is still considered one of the better wideouts in the league and is expected to attract lots of interest around the league. The teams rumored to be interested in signing him are the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the New England Patriots.

The Arizona Cardinals made a series of roster moves on Wednesday that included moving on from veteran wideout Robbie Anderson and Pro Bowl center Rodney Hudson.

The moves will bring additional cap relief to the Cardinals, who were already below the salary cap. With Anderson off the books, Arizona will save $12 million, while Hudson’s departure can get them an additional $3 million in savings if he’s designated post-June 1 cut.

Anderson joined the Cardinals midway through the 2022 NFL season in a trade from the Carolina Panthers. The 29-year-old player only had seven catches for 76 yards during his time in Arizona. He had accumulated a total of 375 receptions for 4,956 yards and 29 touchdowns since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2016.

Hudson, on the other hand, played four games with the Cardinals in 2022 after struggling with a series of injuries. The three-time Pro Bowler with the Las Vegas Raiders, the 33-year-old player is expected to retire at some point this offseason.

The Cardinals are expected to continue rebuilding their roster in the coming weeks in hopes of bouncing back after a disappointing 4-13 campaign. Arizona will enter the 2023 season with a new head coach, having replaced Kliff Kingsbury with Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon last month.

It’s no secret that the Arizona Cardinals would be willing to part ways with Pro Bowl wideout DeAndre Hopkins if the right offer comes their way. And now we know what that offer should look like.

Longtime Cardinals beat writer Mike Jurecki reported earlier this week that his sources told him the Cardinals are looking to get at least a second-round selection and a conditional pick for Hopkins.

Considering the increase in the value of quality wide receivers in recent years, some might be surprised by the Cardinals not asking for a first-round selection. However, Hopkins’ age, big contract, and the fact that he served a six-game suspension in 2023 for violating NFL’s performance-enhancing drugs policy are probably making teams cautious about giving significant assets to sign him.

DeAndre Hopkins spent the first seven seasons of his pro career with the Houston Texans, establishing himself as one of the premium wideouts in the league. After unsuccessful contract extension talks, the Texans decided to send him to Arizona in 2020 in exchange for a second-round selection, a fourth-round pick swap, and running back David Johnson.

Hopkins inked a two-year, $54.5 million contract extension with the Cardinals upon his arrival, becoming the highest-paid wideout in the league. It seemed like money well-spent for the franchise at first, as Hopkins delivered 115 catches for 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in his first year. However, the Clemson product would go on to play only 19 games in the following two years due to injuries and suspension, totaling 102 catches and 1,289 yards receiving.

The Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray is “right on schedule” while working his way back from an ACL injury he suffered in December. This was revealed by the team’s new head coach Jonathan Gannon in a recent chat with the reporters.

“He’s doing great,” Gannon told reporters when asked about Murray. “He’s doing what he needs to do and right on schedule.”

The initial reports after Murray’s surgery suggested that the 25-year-old player won’t be back in time to start the 2023 season. Gannon didn’t confirm or deny this, saying that there is no timetable for the player’s return and that he will play when he’s “fully healthy.”

“I’m not going to put a timetable on that right now,” Gannon added. “Whenever Kyler is fully healthy to play, that’s when he’ll play.”

Kyler Murray arguably had his worst season as a pro in 2022, throwing for 2,368 yards and 14 touchdowns in 11 games. The Cardinals were 3-8 with him as a starter and finished the season with a 4-13 record.

After a disappointing campaign, the Cardinals’ ownership decided to fire head coach Kliff Kingsbury. After a lengthy search, they settled on Gannon, hoping the 40-year-old, who served as the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator for the past two years, can get the franchise back to winning ways.

Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray is expected to recover from his torn ACL in time for the start of the 2023 season, league sources confirmed on Sunday. According to the doctors who examined the player, Murray is expected to recover from his injury within six to eight months.

Murray suffered his injury during last Monday night’s game against the New England Patriots. The player was carted off the field upon the medical team’s realization that his injury was a significant one.

It is expected that Murray will be placed on the Cardinals’ physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp next summer, before being gradually more involved in training until he is fully fit.

Until Murray returns to action, the Cardinals are expected to rely on Colt McCoy to fill in at quarterback. McCoy also played in Murray’s stead when he picked up a hamstring injury earlier in the season.

“He could be a coach if he wanted to right now. He’d probably take my job easily. He has that type of knowledge and that type of command in the locker room,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury said of McCoy.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL, coach Kliff Kingsbury confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

Murray was injured during the Cardinals’ 27-13 loss to the New England Patriots loss on Monday night. The quarterback collapsed after a three-yard run in the third play of the game, suffering the non-contact injury in the process. On Tuesday, he underwent an MRI that revealed the extent of this injury.

“That’s obviously unfortunate and tough to see,” Kingsbury said of Murray’s injury predicament. “And talking to him last night, um, yeah, it was a tough night.”

Despite being ruled out for the rest of the season, there are still some more tests that Murray is expected to undergo in order to learn the full extent of his injury. Kingsbury expects to receive a final report on the player’s situation on Wednesday.

With just four games left in the season, the Cardinals appear to be out of the running for a postseason berth. Should they be unable to turn their fortunes around, they will at least look to leapfrog the Seattle Seahawks to grab second place in the NFC West.
