Arizona Cardinals’ veteran running back Marlon Mack tore his Achilles and will miss the entire 2023 NFL season as a result. The news was confirmed to reporters by the team’s head coach Jonathan Gannon on Wednesday.

Mack suffered the injury during Tuesday’s practice. It came less than a week after he signed with the Cardinals on a one-year deal. The 27-year-old player already came back from an Achilles tear once before.

Mack entered the NFL as the fourth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent the first five years of his career in Indy and had his best season in 2019 when he rushed for 1,091 yards and eight touchdowns.

The South Florida product spent the 2022 campaign with the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos. He had a total of 16 carries, all of which came with the Broncos, and rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinals signed Mack with the intention of adding depth to their running back corps. It is unclear whether the team will turn to the free agent market again or rely on undrafted rookie Emari Demercado and former practice squad back Ty’Son Williams.
